  • Good Water Rower
Style: Water rowing machine2
I never fully know when I order something how it is going to work out. This purchase has worked out very well and, after over a year of use, I would definitely buy again. Nothing showing signs of use. I’m 6’ and about 210. The rower fits me nicely and feels very sturdy under me. It took a little bit to put it together, but it was more about me taking my time to get it right than rushing through it. It is quiet and the sound of the water while working out is very zen. The water level is the resistance level. I just changed the water for the first time and it was clear and clean. Plopped in the second chlorine tablet and have one left. The workout is great. The motion is fluid, there are no squeaks, vibration or annoyances. The display is really the only let down, but I barely use it. It may have more functionality than it appears to have, but I don’t care about tracking workouts or posting on Facebook. I just like rowing and the 30 minutes of peace. I see a lot of people complaining about the foot straps and that was one of my complaints early on. The thing is, if you are using the straps to return to the catch, you are doing it wrong. The balls of your feet should always be in contact with the foot pedal and not pulling against the strap for the return. The workout is in the push, not the recovery. Find the Dark Horse 30 minute beginner video on YouTube. It helps you isolate each movement as you are learning to use the rower. Anyway, good solid rower, nice peaceful workout, super low maintenance and I would buy again. ... show more

  • Not a WaterRower, but a much better value (see details). Recommended
Style: Water rowing machine2
Given the current conditions, I can't really go to the gym. In an effort to bring the gym to me, I bought the HouseFit Water Rower Rowing Machine (330Lbs Weight Capacity). While rowing machines that use different kinds of resistance are available for less money, I just like the feel and noise of water-based resistance. Since price was still a huge factor, though, manufacturers like WaterRower weren't practical options. That's where the HouseFit came in. The HouseFit arrives is a pretty huge box. Once you open it, you see that the entire front subframe (with the water chamber) comes fully assembled. There are only three pieces to bolt up (front legs, back legs, and display support). I've included photos to show what you get. The seat slides on, and is retained by two screw in cushion stops. There are a couple wire ties pulled through detented holes in the display support... don't pull them out! Those are for pulling the tachometer lead (and some other lead) through the column to the display. You may want to use the wire ties to just pull some nylon thread through to use instead. Assembly was pretty easy, but I'd recommend putting a little thread locker on the bolts that don't go into locknuts. Assembly takes about 10 minutes, and it's helpful if you use a ratcheting screwdriver with hex bits, rather than the included Allen wrenches. Pretty much everything you need to get going is included, with the exception of a funnel - I cut up a Starbuck's cup for the purpose (see photo). Regarding the use of the rower, changing the level of resistance isn't really a trivial matter, as you have to change the water level. That's not hard to do, but you'll need a bucket (and possibly a funnel), in addition to the siphon tool provided. Operation of the LCD unit is pretty straightforward, as it really doesn't have much functionality. The part I was most worried about, was the smoothness of the seat/rail assembly. The setup is a bit different from what I'm used to, as the HouseFit has some nylon rollers in contact with a polished, stainless steel rail. It works really well, and I think it's every bit as good as the wheel/track setups I've used on more expensive, professional machines. Lest you think I didn't look at the HouseFit critically, I do have to say that I really hate one thing about it. The retaining straps for your shoes are CHEAP. While the Velcro'd nylon straps are more than strong enough for the task, they are a pain to engage and disengage. It's not the end of the world, and you only have to think about it two times per workout, but it is about the only reminder that you didn't spend an extra $1000 on something else. The other thing is that my unit's frame had some substantial surface finish issues. I'm not sure if it was painted or powder coated, but there were some scratches/scrapes on my frame from prior to packaging. It's not noticeable when assembled, but it's there. I don't really know why the gold standard for the water rowing machines appears to be wooden frames, but I'd guess it would have something to do with people wanting an aesthetic experience akin to rowing crew. Since I never did that, and because I have an engineer's sensibilities, I'm more than happy to have a steel frame. The vital requirements, for me, were that the machine had to have the type of action that I'm accustomed to with water rowers, and that the machine had to be well made. Aside from by shoe strap gripes, The HouseFit is great, and a great value in the sub-$500 range. Recommended. ... show more

  • A lot of bang for your buck...
I got this rower for it's convenient storing/folding capabilities and the price if I am being honest. I am not a pro rower just want to add variety to my daily cycling routine. I must admit that some of the reviews had me worried but I took the plunge anyways. To my surprise the machine was already half built right out of the box. It took 30mins to unbox, move into position and assemble. My Ikea nightstand was tougher to assemble than this thing. I've put a few miles on it as of this review and can say that I do enjoy the workout. I am 6ft tall and 210lbs and it suits me just fine. My wife is 5'3 and buck five soaking wet and loves to use it as well. My only gripe thus far is the comfort of the seat and handle. I am pretty sure I will have to change or do something about it sooner than later. This is a challenge on most rowers from what I've read however and not just this one. The other gripe is about squeaking noise as the seat rolls on the track. I can't figure out if it's loose or if it needs some type of lubricant or what. Perhaps the seller can reach out with suggestions on how to resolve this. Overall I ah satisfied with the rower a month into it's journey. So far a great buy... ... show more
