On the first day, I put them to the test at a busy café, where the background noise of clinking dishes and background talk made it difficult to have a discussion. Every single one of her words came through clearly, even when she dropped her voice, which enabled me to participate in the conversation without having to ask for repetitions. It was nothing short of astonishing to have that degree of clarity, particularly in very busy areas. Every night, I now dock each item in its own tiny charging container so that I don't have to struggle with throwaway batteries when the illumination is low. I can dependably use my phone for two full days of extensive usage, which includes attending early morning meetings, doing errands in the middle of the day, and attending evening activities. A fast top-off that takes twenty minutes offers enough juice for an afternoon of errands, which is a convenience that eliminates the continual anxiety of unexpected power loss. This forgetfulness only occurs on the very rare occasion that I forget. When I am out walking my dog through wind-whipped park trails and when I am having an unexpected backyard BBQ with my neighbors, I wear my amplifiers. Their solid fit is shown by the fact that they do not move from their position even while I am leaning over to tend to garden beds or throwing a Frisbee. I absolutely love my new invisible hearing aids! Before, I always missed parts of conversations with my friends or family, especially in noisy places like busy streets or restaurants. But now, these little devices make sounds louder and clearer, so I can understand everything around me without getting distracted by background noise. First of all, the sound quality is amazing. When I’m walking down the sidewalk with cars honking and people talking, I can still hear my mom calling my name from a few feet away. At dinner time in a crowded restaurant, I can actually join in on jokes and conversations instead of pretending I know what everyone is saying. They’re also super comfortable and almost impossible to see. The tiny design fits right into my ear, and I forget I’m even wearing them. Charging these hearing aids couldn’t be simpler. The compact case fully charges in just two hours, and then I get up to 25 hours of use. I took them on a weekend trip and didn’t worry about running out of power. At the end of the day, I just pop them back into the case, and they start charging right away. It’s way easier than changing tiny batteries or carrying extra chargers. Using them is really easy, too. When I take a hearing aid out of the case, it turns on automatically after about five or six seconds. This smart feature stops that annoying whistling noise. To change the volume, I simply press the button once. A quick click makes it louder or softer until it’s just right for wherever I am—whether I’m in a loud playground or reading quietly in my room.

I use these hearing amplifiers mostly in the evenings when I’m hanging out with my family or catching up with friends over the phone. They are easy to use, the size fit. There’s a little dial on the back of each one, so I can tweak the volume for my left and right ear separately. My left ear’s worse, so I turn that one up a bit more. The part that goes in the ear is soft and flexible, not some hard plastic that digs in. I can pop them out to clean them. They are lightweight. I usually wear them in the afternoon or evening when we’re all sitting around the living room. My husband and daughter don’t have to raise their voices as much. It’s been handy for those cozy family moments. When I’m on the phone, they do a decent job if the signal’s strong and it’s quiet around me. But if I’m somewhere noisy, like when we’re at a restaurant or kids are running around yelling, the noise-canceling doesn’t keep up. Same thing happens on calls if the signal’s spotty, it gets muffled, and I miss half the conversation. I wish they handled those situations better, but I guess that’s asking a lot from something so small.

I realized that I was able to pick up on small ambient noises that had been fading into the background for far too long. These sounds included the distant clink of cutlery, the quiet hum of the refrigerator in the next room, and even the delicate rustling of pages as my husband turned through a book. What was even more astonishing was the way in which the noise-cancelling technology that was put in was able to differentiate between genuine speech and overlapping babble. During a visit to a crowded coffee shop, my friend's voice came through clear and distinct, while the murmurs and whirrs of the espresso machine in the surrounding area subsided to a soft whisper. This enabled me to concentrate on our conversation rather than having to strain my ears to hear every word. It turned out that comfort was just as astounding as the music quality. It is possible for each amplifier to fit to the contour of my ear canal without pinching or moving, even when I am walking quickly or reclining back in my office chair. This is because the amplifiers are designed to almost disappear within the ear canal. It doesn't matter whether I'm riding my bike down a gorgeous route or sitting in for a three-hour movie marathon at the cinema; I've forgotten that I'm wearing them since they are so comfortable and secure. The fact that they may be worn throughout the day has made it possible for me to re-engage completely in every scenario without the constant temptation to take them off or make adjustments.
