Frequently asked questions

The Hayward PoolVac XL operates by utilizing your pool's existing filtration system. It gets connected to the skimmer or suction port, and as the pump runs, it creates suction that allows the PoolVac XL to move across the pool's floor and walls, vacuuming debris into your pool's filtration system. Its unique wing and skirt design enhance its suction capability and allow for thorough pool coverage.

The Hayward PoolVac XL is ideally designed for in-ground gunite pools. While it is optimized for gunite surfaces, its performance on other pool surfaces like vinyl or fiberglass may vary and is not officially recommended by the manufacturer for non-gunite pools.

The Hayward PoolVac XL is designed to work with your pool's existing pump and filtration system, so no additional equipment is necessary for its operation. However, for optimal performance, your pool's pump and filtration system should be in good working order and properly sized for your pool's volume.

Maintaining and cleaning the PoolVac XL involves occasionally checking the suction path for debris and ensuring the wings and shoes are in good condition. It's also important to regularly inspect the hose for any signs of wear or damage and to clean the filter system to maintain proper suction. Always disconnect the PoolVac XL from the pool's suction port and turn off the pool pump before performing any maintenance.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Hayward pool vacuum comes highly recommended by users for its durability, effectiveness, and ease of use. Suitable for different pool types and sizes, it operates without electrical power, relying on the pool's suction line. Maneuverability around obstacles and along walls ensures thorough cleaning, while its simple design limits maintenance headaches. However, concerns about longevity and functionality after a period of use have been mentioned.

Pros

  • 🌟 Highly effective at cleaning various pool types and sizes
  • 🔄 Excellent maneuverability, managing walls and avoiding obstacles efficiently
  • 🛠️ Low maintenance thanks to a straightforward, electrical-free design
  • 🕒 Long-lasting with reports of units operating well over a decade
  • 📦 Comes with ample tubing and is described as a great value compared to robotic cleaners

Cons

  • 🌱 Can get hung up on large debris or deep creases in the pool liner
  • ⏰ May show a significant decrease in performance or stop working around the two-year mark
  • 🔧 Common issues with certain parts leading to additional investment in replacements
  • 📉 Quality and durability concerns despite the initially high performance

Should I Buy It?

If you value simplicity, durability, and effective pool cleaning over the high-tech gimmicks of robotic cleaners, the Hayward pool vacuum could be a fit for you. However, be prepared for potential maintenance or replacement after a few years of service. Weighing its upfront cost against the longevity and effectiveness reported by many, it presents as a solid investment for diligent pool maintenance.

  • Worth the money.
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
UPDATE:Yesterday when cleaning pool I noticed I didn't have the vacuum hose correctly in the skimmer filter and adjusted it...and now it does CLIMB OUT OF THE POOL! YAHOOOOO!! WORKS LIKE A CHARM 💥 I’m giving 5 stars because it was easy to set up out of the box and place in pool, where it immediately went to work. I was skeptical at first if it would work efficiently because it almost didn’t pass the suction test. It was registering to low. I placed it in the shallow end, and it started right up and started working. Mine may not climb out of the pool, but it still goes up the wall about 80% and once in deep end, it has enough suction and power to come back up to the shallow end to clean. Sometimes it appears to get stuck around the stairs, but always works it’s way out of it, and keeps going. I’ve never had to readjust the vacuum to free it from being stuck. I’m really happy I was finally able to afford it, because it’s worth the money. I only wished that it came with a purchasable extended warranty. ... show more

  • Handy pool cleaner for in-ground pools
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
Note that most of these automatic pool cleaners are not cheap, but they save the pool owner a lot of manual labor. In my experience, I normally just leave the unit in the pool; so whenever the pump is on, the cleaner is working its way around the pool. You might want to remove it if you had a pool party to avoid bothering the swimming guests. The plastic parts do wear on this; so every year or so, you need to buy some replacement feet, wings, etc. With that said, our previous cleaner of this same make/model lasted for years with occasional servicing. I've watched our pool supply store service ours, and the whole unit just screws together; so I may try to just buy parts next time and do it myself. Most of the worn parts are very apparent. You just need to buy the parts for your specific model. ... show more

  • Broke down after 1 year.
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
The cleaner stopped moving 1 year after the purchase, with no damage, no stuck debris -- just stopped functioning on day. The manufacturer does not respond, $500 down the drain. I used to buy Hayward equipment for decades, but this is the last time I'm touching anything from this brand.

  • COST A LITTLE MORE BUT WORTH IT
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
I am very happy that I purchased this unit as opposed to a Pentair Shark that I had before. The nose configuration of the Pentair constantly got hung up on the bottom step of the pool. This Hayward requires the pump pressure (suction) to be within a certain range in order for it to function properly. To accomplish that, it comes with a spring loaded device that you attach to the end of the vacuum hose. While keeping it under water and with the pool motor running you can see the amount of suction your pool is providing. Then by either adjusting the pump motor speed or by opening or closing the intake valve you can easily make any necessary adjustments. The instructions are clear on how to do this. After setting it up, the vacuum works perfectly and as a side benefit, I had to lower my pump speed for the correct pressure. The only negative is that if the unit sucks up a small hard object, it can jam in the impeller which will cause the vacuum to stop moving. However, there is a small cover plate on the bottom of the vacuum that opens by removing one screw and allows the easy removal of the object. Spare parts that wear out through use are also readily available. All in all, I am happy I spent a little more for this Hayward unit and will replace it with another one in the future. ... show more

  • Great Pool Vacuum - Requires less pump suction than other brands / models
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
This vacuum works great. I had the same model (dealer model 2025ADC) for a few years (5?) and it finally wore out. I tried to rebuild it but was unsuccessful. Not all suction vacuums are created equal. Hayward 32025ADC best features: 1. Works with much less pump suction / lower RPM allowing me to keep my variable speed pump at the lower speeds - 2500rpm and vacuuming all day. 2. Next to silent operation. Very quiet. Downsides: Debris pickup size is smaller for this model and larger debris/ leaves can jam it up. You can offset this by using more VSP suction if that is an issue for your pool. The competition: The two wheeled models such as; Poolvergnuegen “the orginal pool cleaner”, hayward phoenix, or aquanaut 200. Also, the Pentair rebel. These are all the same unit with different colors and branding. Many swear by this two wheel design. The two wheeled versions require significantly more suction to move at all. Also they require two plastic float rings be installed on the line hose to keep the unit upright. They work by squeezing the vacuum line and reducing hose size. These float rings may fall off or get kicked off my kids when swimming. The Aquanaut 200 I tried was so loud I could hear the mechanical clicking of the unit over the pool pump and while it was in the deep end! It was distracting. In short My family swims daily and we leave the vacuum in the pool and running. The Hayward XL concrete model worked with less suction and is very quiet! ... show more

  • Buy one about every 7 to 8 years
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
These have a lot of moving parts that wear down, but you can easily replace. But they eventually get to the point where it’s time for a new unit. But it’s worth it because they clean the pool great. I think I use the word but too much. But whatever.
