  • Trail & Home
Style: 40V Size: 16"
The media could not be loaded. I got this saw primarily for trail maintenance, but I'll use it around the house as well. I have a Husqvarna 435, which is the closest equivalent gas chainsaw to this GreenWorks. Both have 16" bars and weigh about the same. The 20312 weighs 12 lbs 13 oz and the 435 weighs 12 lbs 4 oz both with bar, chain and scabbard. While the 435 is more powerful, that power is offset by the relative hassle running a gas saw. Noise, fumes, starting all sway in favor of the battery saw. The attached video shows that the actual cutting time is short so unless your cutting all day I'd go with the battery saw. BTW, the battery weighs an ounce shy of 3 lbs, so carrying a spare is unlikely. The video cutting an 18" log is easily worth more than my chatting, so spend a minute and watch. BTW, that deadfall is above 11,000 feet, getting a gas saw to start at that elevation is iffy at best. The photo shows the chain case and cover after one tank of oil, about 2 full batteries. The liberal oiler attracts a lot of wood chips. The 2nd photo shows the blocks and limbs from 2020 trimming, see update. 2020 Update: While I intended to use the saw for trail maintenance, that's not how it worked out. One year after purchase a monster forest fire 10-miles from my home changed everything. I embarked on a quest to prune/trim all the trees surrounding my house. That quest continues to this day. To date I've removed low/dead branches from over 100 trees in excess of 10 acres. Many times on my knees and even sitting. This battery saw did 95% of that trimming. My OEM chain has been sharpened to almost nothing left. Purchased two more chains. The battery and saw have never failed. I've been through over 3 gallons of chain oil over that span. The 4AH charge is such that when it needs a recharge, so do I. I can't imagine using a gas saw for such awkward work. ... show more

  • chain kept coming off on first use until chain was damaged
Style: 40V Size: 16"
I'm a landscaping professional. First time I used it the chainsaw on an important job, the chain needed constant tensioning. Then it started coming off no matter what - this after about 10 minutes of use. After the third time of putting the chain back on, I noticed the unit was leaking oil. I couldn't get the chain re-seated because either the chain or the bar channel were damaged. I called support. After 20 minutes on hold, someone told me to send a photo of the unit w/serial # visible and a screenshot of the invoice, and that I should take it to the nearest repair center. The place was about a 2.5 hour roundtrip. I told them that was unacceptable, and that the machine was obviously defective - the oil-leaking issue wasn't something I wanted to deal with, let alone a defective product long-term. After I told the support person that, I heard her talking to someone else about an unrelated issue. I waited a minute, then suddenly the call was disconnected. Chalk this one up to experience. No more Greenworks products for me. ... show more

  • So close to perfect
Style: 40V Size: 16" Tool Only
It is amazingly powerful for a battery powered tool. Very easy to use since you don't have to get a gas engine to start or stay running. Can cut really large trunks. So why only 3 stars? It leaks bar oil everywhere. Says in the manual that this might happen, but it is way worse than just a little annoyance. If you store it with oil in the reservoir, which isn't recommended, it will leak all of the oil out. The position it is stored in doesn't matter either. I carried mine in a backpack to get to tree falls on a trail, and every inch of the saw was coated in bar oil. It was even coming out of the trigger area. I spoke to customer service and they admitted that this is an issue. I bought the 40V 12" bar saw of theirs and that one works great. No issues whatsoever. I will keep the 16" Digi Pro saw since it can handle much bigger trees than the 12", but I will only use it in my yard, keep it level, and drain all bar oil out as soon as I am done using it. I also own the 40V hedge clipper and leaf blower and those work very well. This system is great for occasional use tools. Battery last long, holds charge between uses, and recharges fast. If not for this oil issue I would be a 5 star fan. ... show more

  • Wanted to love it... but had to send it back.
Style: 40V Size: 16" Tool Only
I purchased this saw to do light cutting and clearing in my woods. I was initially concerned about the battery not lasting long, or not having enough power. By all the reviews I read, it looked like power and battery life was a non issue. I will say the saw had plenty of power. I did some cutting for about 10-15 minutes. Worked great, plenty of power, I cut down an 18" tree with no issues. Then it stopped working and giving me an error. I read through the entire manual and could not find anything on the issue. So then I started googling and still couldn't find my exact issue. Which makes me think my issue was pretty rare, however I did uncover a lot of other issues with the saw itself and the battery that I didn't find in the reviews. The battery I received also had an issue. It worked, but the indicator for the charge did not. So I called the support line. I was pleased to find that the person that answered spoke perfect English. She was quickly able to identify my issue as an internal issue with the saw itself. I asked if it could just be the battery. I figured if the indicator was bad maybe the whole battery was bad. She said that was not the case. The error I was getting was for the saw itself. She said if it was battery related I would have gotten a different error. I really want to like this saw, and thought about replacing it, but decided I would return it and buy a gas powered saw. The reason being is that if a gas saw stops working I can fix it myself. If an electrical issue happens I can't fix that. Yes this saw came with a warranty, but at the end of the day I don't want to have to ship something back every time I have an issue. In short, if I hadn't had an issue this saw is great. It would have been exactly what I wanted. I was very tempted to try another one. ... show more
