I bought this splitter for my husband for Christmas. It was timely delivered as promised. My husband splits wood logs into smaller pieces for burning and kindling. In the past he used a large splitting mall to accomplish this task. I was hoping to get him a tool, which would help in accomplishing this recurring task in a quicker and easier manner. The splitter appears to be strong enough to take the repeated strikes necessary to split the logs. The bottom of the tool has holes to fasten the tool to a sturdy base for stability. Although he has not used that feature yet, he does highly recommend securing it. Otherwise, he has to continually reposition the tool after striking the logs. As noted, the tool does provides that option. So, that is not a negative comment. It is just something to be aware of, when using. His main comment about the tool is as follows. The splitting blade of the tool as received was blunt or dull. It may be delivered this way for safety purposes and he acknowledges that possibility. However, it makes it almost impossible to split a log easily as the promotional materials advertise. In fact, it is difficult to split a log after even striking it with a large mall. He also acknowledges that the promotional materials maybe using very soft logs such as pine. However, he has to split oak, hickory, and mesquite wood, which are considered hard woods. To over come this problem, he uses a file and or grinder to sharpen the blade prior to attempting to split the logs into smaller pieces. After sharpening the blade, he places a log securely on the blade and taps it down with a hammer or small sledge to get it started. He then hits it hard with a larger sledge and the logs will generally split after one or two strikes as shown in the promotional materials. It should be noted however, that logs containing knots are a challenge to split very easily. Once he figured out that the blade had to first be sharpened and that the log had to also be tapped onto the blade before striking, the tool performed as advertised. After this routine was established, the tool did make splitting logs into smaller pieces and kindling quicker an easier as advertised. ... show more

Chopping wood with an axe was hit or miss for me… literally. This lets me use a a sledge hammer and my wild swings give me results every time. I split logs and kindling in minutes vs. hours. The draw back is the size of the logs you can split… I use an awl to split the bigger logs then use the splitter to quarter the logs or to make kiindling. ... show more

I have never branched off into the realm of splitting before and there are reasons I’m glad I bought this and reasons I wish I hadn’t. Pro: The large circumference is amazing, in fact I wish it was bigger but it blows 90% of the other options out of the water. The center “punch” on the blade does a great job of holding wood still. The blades are really well constructed. Cons: I see exactly why the single blade option is more expensive. I found myself at least 10 times wishing I had spent the extra $10. The brace itself wasnt enough for bigger pieces of wood- it needs to be mounted to something in order to allow for full force to be used. Overall- I think it works for kindling, and it’s probably the best you can buy at this price point. ... show more
