  • Update! Good, not great, saw
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
3/27/22: ok, updated to five stars. This saw is awesome and there’s no way around it. Who cares about the oil leak. I think this saw edges out the Milwaukee - it’s just the perfect size I.e. lightweight, small, maneuverable, etc. I used it all day yesterday trimming up trees at my house, and last week we used it taking down a half dozen dead standing for firewood at my friends cabin. One 20V battery charge bucked up all six trees (10” deadstanding lodge pole pines) with a little more charge to spare. I can tell the quality of the saw is going to give it a long lifetime. I really don’t care about the leak; store it on its side, bring a small rag with you, and it’s really not an issue. I already had a 20v battery and so the saw by itself was just a no brainer at this price point. The battery life and maneuverability of this saw is awesome. I can take down a couple trees for firewood while out camping and it does a quick and efficient job, and plenty of battery life. As you may have read from other reviews, it does leak oil. After doing a lot of research about this issue, it kind of is what it is. Oil drips out of this little air chamber on the bottom of the main housing, but you can combat the issue by simply storing it on its side with the air chamber facing up. The oil does not leak while the saw is in use and it takes a little while for the leak to start back up after you’re are done cutting. As someone said on a chainsaw forum I was reading about this particular saw: welcome to the world of chainsaws. And now that I think about it, my Sthil farm boss leaks a little bit of oil all the time, so it’s kind of like eh whatever. All in all, I think it’s worth it - a good price point, awesome battery life, perfect feel in your hands, lightweight, etc. I recommend it. I guess the Milwaukee chainsaw is the best, so probably go buy that if you can afford it, but if you’re budget conscious (and already had a 20v battery like me) then this is a fine saw. ... show more

  • The invasive vines have had a very bad effect on the larger healthy trees by choking many ...
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
I bought this compact chain saw to address a section of our property that was neglected for 30 years before we acquired it—small early growth hardwoods such as willow, chokecherry, maples, and paper birch that for the most part do not exceed 8 inches in diameter. It's a wetland area that we are working on to mitigate invasive species such as bittersweet, briars, and, most invasive of all, Japanese knot weed. The invasive vines have had a very bad effect on the larger healthy trees by choking many of them to death or stunting their growth. Some of the root stock of these vines are 4-5 inches in diameter, far too large for lopers. When I have something really large to take down or a tree that would endanger others, I'll call in the pros with the training, professional equipment, bucket truck, and industrial chipper. That said, this little saw is terrific for pruning and selectively cutting vines, fallen trees, and sucker growth as we move in the direction of replanting native sedges and grasses to create a wetland meadow. It can easily take down an 8-10 inch diameter tree if you are patient enough to let the saw do its job and avoid pinching and binding. It's easy for a 65 year old to handle, and will go for about an hour of steady cutting and trimming on my 6 Ah Max battery. As others note, it uses up chain oil pretty quickly and you have to patiently clean up the area around the chain sprocket after use as it tends to accumulate an oily mix of saw chips and debris. It's easy enough to clean; you just have to remember to do it. It's important to read the directions or you will make the mistake of not cocking the safety shield. Unless it's properly cocked, the saw won't turn on which is a problem some seem to have encountered in the negative comments. You have to firmly push the shield forward towards the cutting end and then pull it back until it clicks into place. I have not found the shield awkward to use nor have I accidentally set it off stopping the chain while working with the saw. Yes, the trigger lock is annoying, but so what? It's supposed to make you think about what you are doing before you accidentally pul the trigger to start the saw. I got used to it quickly and it did make me behave in a more deliberate manner, which is a good thing. Clearly, DeWalt's lawyers studied the safety specifications in an era when the advertisements for tort litigation are ubiquitous. We all have to live with the consequences. This saw is not a replacement for a larger, more powerful gasoline-powered chainsaw capable of cutting down large trees. It's an ideal saw for someone who already has the batteries used in other DeWalt tools, doesn't need a chainsaw very often, or hates the hassle of modern gasoline fuels with alcohol that gum up quickly and lead to time consuming maintenance or expensive repair bills. Even pros would probably find this saw useful for light trimming and pruning and many modern pickups have outlets that would let them recharge batteries while moving. Economically, the unit costs for fuel, this saw, and batteries are probably cheaper for most homeowners than gasoline-powered equipment as modern gasoline without alcohol is expensive. Unless you do the work yourself, one repair bill to clean out and repair a gummed up gasoline carburetor (when fuel has sat in it for 6 months or longer) can easily cost as much as a new DeWalt saw without the battery. If you have a small yard, you don't need this saw; buy a hand saw and get some exercise. If you have a large yard or one that needs extensive maintenance, this saw will probably save a fair amount of money by letting you do the work yourself. It's a valuable tool. ... show more

  • Minimalist chainsaw
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
It's effective, minimal in size, chain speed, and power, which helps battery life while still not freezing and jamming. I recommend glazing over the instructions because it has useful general tips as well as the fact that you must let the chain reach full speed before cutting which is true. It can cut larger logs but it's not meant for it. I'm imagining it would take a while to get through hardwood over 7 inches diameter. But it's not hard on the chain, for that reason, so I expect the chain to last. And it is unlikely to abuse your batteries by drawing on them too hard. But if the chain dulls, from dirt or something, I could imagine this tool not being very useful until the blade is sharpened because it doesn't have the chain speed of gas. I brought it on a tree removal job after getting tired of inhaling gasoline exhaust. The crew said I liked playing with my "toy" and that's fair, I did. And less headaches from fumes. ... show more

  • Overall good
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
I wouldn’t buy this I’d you plan on doing a huge job or commercially, but it’s great for small and quick stuff. Much easier than using a gas one. It’s powerful and will do the job, but be reasonable with your expectations. The only thing I’ve encountered that’s wrong with it is it leaks chain oil when sitting which apparently is common. Overall I like it, glad I bought it because it’s great for small stuff where I don’t have to get out the gas one. ... show more
