  • Exceeds expectations
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Expectations started with an easy-to-use bush trimmer which was lite enough for a woman to use. After one bush trimming, my wife decided it was her saw, and if I wanted to trim something I could order another. Then, a 50' red oak tree didn't make it through a lightning storm and the wind blew it down across the driveway. Never ... never get in the way of a woman that wants to go shopping. It took her 3 hours, plus or minus a few minutes, and the tree was in a pile, in small pieces. Small branches, OK, medium branches, OK, but then the trunk which was thicker than 12 inches remained in her way. I found that in small pieces as well. Angle cut, angle cut, then the remainder got a straight cut. And we have a stack of big logs. She was using the 5ah battery and ran out of juice at the 2 hr and 40 minute mark. Added more oil to the reservoir for chain lubrication as it was getting low, and she finished the job. She is small and lite weight, so the chainsaw being lite weight was good thing. Never expected a tree trunk that was over 16" to be a target of a shopper. It was, and it lost the battle. I pulled it apart and inspected it for wear. None the worse for wear, but decided just-in-case I would get her an extra. The disassembly, cleaning, lubing, and reassembly part got to my work bench. I found it easy to do the necessary usage maintenance to get it ready for her next attach on something too big for a 12" chainsaw. I checked the chain tension to see if it had loosened during use, but it was right where it should be. I asked her about it and I got the perfect answer ... there is a nice knob on the side and every now and then I would check tension, and adjust it. It is easy. Still looks and operates like new. ... show more

  • It's a 20V beast It's a 20V beast
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Let's not kid ourselves, you are not looking at this so you can start a career as a lumberjack. You want a small chainsaw to chop down the occasional tree and not have the spouse ride your backside about it daily for 3 months. You're Harry Homeowner and you have a couple other 20V tools that can use this same battery. Yep my friend, we are in the same boat and should hang out sometime. So what does this little chainsaw do? First and foremost, it makes you chuckle at it when you open the box. You think "what is this little toy going to do, this was a mistake." Then you think "I am going to destroy you and send you back in about an hour." So you take this little guy out back and cut a 3in dead branch off the tree, it takes a second or two. Okay big boy, let's try that 5in branch so I can send you back to tinkertown. The chainsaw laughs at you this time, its saying is that all you got?!?!? You keep chopping things down and this thing brought it's A game, it is not giving up. You are working your way through your yard, into the neighbors and then you see it, it's a decent sized cedar tree that has to come down. Okay little buddy, this is where I crush you, box you up, and send you packing. This 12" piece of plastic raises its mighty teeth and goes to town, it is shredding, chewing, and spitting out wood like a sawmill in the Pacific Northwest. At this point you realize it, you cannot read a book by its cover. The is a 20V, 12", beast. You cut down a lot of trees and it kept going. About 2 hours in you swapped out a battery and kept going. Dewalt MightySaw, you win. I used this saw the day after it arrived to chop down a ton of buckthorn and a couple cedar trees. On the property we had a gas saw that the chain popped off, we stopped using it, and another electric 60V working as well. While the 60V had more power this Dewalt hung in there quite well. The time difference on cutting things was not all that noticeable. This is light, maneuverable and easy to use. I will happily tell people to get this, it is a workhorse, and I have nothing bad to say about. ... show more

  • Update! Good, not great, saw
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
3/27/22: ok, updated to five stars. This saw is awesome and there’s no way around it. Who cares about the oil leak. I think this saw edges out the Milwaukee - it’s just the perfect size I.e. lightweight, small, maneuverable, etc. I used it all day yesterday trimming up trees at my house, and last week we used it taking down a half dozen dead standing for firewood at my friends cabin. One 20V battery charge bucked up all six trees (10” deadstanding lodge pole pines) with a little more charge to spare. I can tell the quality of the saw is going to give it a long lifetime. I really don’t care about the leak; store it on its side, bring a small rag with you, and it’s really not an issue. I already had a 20v battery and so the saw by itself was just a no brainer at this price point. The battery life and maneuverability of this saw is awesome. I can take down a couple trees for firewood while out camping and it does a quick and efficient job, and plenty of battery life. As you may have read from other reviews, it does leak oil. After doing a lot of research about this issue, it kind of is what it is. Oil drips out of this little air chamber on the bottom of the main housing, but you can combat the issue by simply storing it on its side with the air chamber facing up. The oil does not leak while the saw is in use and it takes a little while for the leak to start back up after you’re are done cutting. As someone said on a chainsaw forum I was reading about this particular saw: welcome to the world of chainsaws. And now that I think about it, my Sthil farm boss leaks a little bit of oil all the time, so it’s kind of like eh whatever. All in all, I think it’s worth it - a good price point, awesome battery life, perfect feel in your hands, lightweight, etc. I recommend it. I guess the Milwaukee chainsaw is the best, so probably go buy that if you can afford it, but if you’re budget conscious (and already had a 20v battery like me) then this is a fine saw. ... show more

  • A great little saw, but read the instructions
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Long-story-short: read and follow the instructions carefully, and everything will work out great. This is not like a reciprocating saw where you can just pull it out, use it, and put it away without a second glance. It needs brake checking, monitoring of the oil level, and cleanup afterwards. I'd been resisting buying a chainsaw for a long time, because of the noise and mess of the gas-powered ones my granddad always used. But I finally bought this one to cut up a bunch of fallen branches from Texas' recent ice storm, and it worked out very well for me. Pros: - It's small and quiet compared to a gas chainsaw - It's light even with a 6Ah battery in it - Battery life is pretty good. The 6Ah FlexVolt battery would last me 30-45 minutes on dense wood. A 2Ah battery like you'd use in a drill only lasts 10 minutes or less, so get the bigger one. Cons: - It needs a diaper for a day or so after you put it away, because maybe a spoonful of residual oil will slowly ooze out the bottom of the chain cover. This is assuming you followed the instructions and drained the oil tank after use. If you didn't, it'll presumably leak much more. Lots of one-star reviews sound like they didn't drain it, and now they've got an oil slick in their garage. - If you don't know how to use the chain brake (the little flap thingy on top), you'll accidentally set it and then freak out, thinking the saw doesn't work. But if you read the instructions, it tells you how to set and reset this brake, and advises you to test it before each use. I've seen several one-star reviews where they've obviously just got the brake set. - If you don't set the chain tension correctly, or you don't secure the chain cover tightly, it'll use too much oil and the chain might even come off the sprocket. Again, the instructions tell you exactly how to do this, including adjusting tension to account for relaxation of a new chain. - It's not as powerful as a gas chainsaw. To cut through a 12" dense oak trunk with a lot of heartwood, it took probably 10 minutes, since I was taking care not to push it too hard. I recommend using the bio-degradable plant-based bar and chain oil from either DeWalt or Ryobi, so you can dump it without poisoning anything. The Ryobi oil is a little more viscous, but it goes through the saw just fine and is more resistant to spilling when you fill up. The oil tank seems to hold 4 or 5 ounces, and you can go through a tank in 10 or 15 minutes, easy. All in all, I like this saw a lot. If they fixed the oil leakage problem so you didn't have to drain and diaper it, I'd give it five stars. ... show more

  • Best Little Chain Saw Best Little Chain Saw
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Admittedly, I've never owned a chainsaw before, but it's probably the only power tool missing from my tool collection. Just never had a need until recently when I moved and discovered I have well over 100 trees I need to care for on my property. Initially I hired someone to come out and trim the trees but after $1,500 and only a few trees trimmed, I concluded this was going to be far less expensive if I started doing it myself. I did some research and felt this would be a good starter chainsaw. I was really on the fence about getting an electric and even though so many reviews said it was every bit as powerful as a traditional chainsaw, I remained skeptical. All the way up until I started using this! I am still shocked at the ease at which is just cuts right through! I have a mixture of oak and cedar trees. While I'm mostly cutting down cedar trees, it's also great for trimming dead/dying branches on the oak trees. And the tip of the saw is pointed enough to do minor trimming of small branches you want to remove. The battery life is great! I have two batteries and while I don't remember how long I used it before switching batteries, I want to say at least a full hour before I traded out the batteries. If anything, I needed to pay attention to the oil level more than the battery. But the place to add oil is easy to open and locks quite securely. I wear earplugs when using the saw, but it seems so quiet, you could probably go without. I was concerned my neighbors might be bothered by the noise of a chainsaw, but after using this, I doubt anyone can even hear the saw when I'm using it. I can fit the saw into a backpack and usually bring two batteries when I go out into my yard to do tree trimming. My only regret was paying for the tree trimming instead of buying this and doing it myself! ... show more

  • Good for light duty work, limbs and small trees
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Good. Light and easy to use. Light to moderate power. Some say oil leaks, not uncommon for any chainsaw, but one solution is to simply store it on it's side so the oil fill cap is up at the top. I wish it had more power, but it's okay for limbs and small trees. Best with high capacity batteries. DeWalt should make a bigger saw with two battery slots. That would be a game changer. ... show more

  • Great little saw for cleanup
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
I would have preferred to get a saw with a longer bar, but I wanted to stay within the Dewalt 20V product range because I have a suite of other Dewalt 20V tools and chargers. With only a 12" bar, this isn't the saw to use on logs greater than 10" in diameter. I did a few cuts through 18-20" logs by cutting from both sides, but the saw bogs down and a couple of times the saw wouldn't start up again until it cooled off. It didn't seem to suffer any lasting effects from that, but I stopped trying to use it for the big cuts. We had a professional drop about six big dying alders on our property recently and I have been doing all the limbing and bucking on the downed trees. The Dewalt 12" is fantastic for cutting up the limbs, and gives a lot of cutting on one 4 or 5 aH battery. I have used it day after day for hours at a time; each battery lasts long enough for a swap battery to charge up on my Dewalt fast-charger unit. The pro had an electric Stihl cordless limbing saw that I'm sure is a better tool, but costs twice as much and would require a different set of batteries and chargers. Dewalt also has the 60V 16" chainsaw, but that would also require moving to the FlexVolt batteries. The chain tension is easy to adjust, and the oil fill easy to get to. Since my chain oil is clear, it is very difficult to tell the chain oil level without opening the fill cover, but that is simple to One fill on the chain oil lasts just about the same amount of time as a fully charged battery, but sometimes a bit less. I've gotten a sense for when to check the oil, and when it is time to add oil, I just go ahead and swap to a new battery. The unit does leak chain oil when sitting, which seems to be pretty common for all chainsaws. Make sure you store it on something that will absorb the leaked oil, or drain out the oil before storage. Summary: I was a little disappointed at first about the short bar and inability to cut large logs, but have been thrilled with the overall maneuverability, power, and battery life. ... show more

  • Simple and ready to go with no staring issues
Style: Chainsaw Bare Tool Only
Nice simple and ready to go with the insertion of the 20V battery. This is going to be drawing a lot of juice so I recommend charging your battery so all the cells are at the same internal voltage. This is a type 3 that replaces the type 2 I had. The 3 types all sue the same case and only the motor controller is different inside these units. Easy to use and easy to adjust. These saws are noted for leaking bar oil If you are going to store it for a while I suggest draining the bar oil (sawdust is an issue. keep it clean) of setting it on a pan or old cookie sheet. Some suggest laying it on its right side. Seems it still likes to leak oil. A liitl oil leak is ok with me as I DON'T have to yank a cord. Also have the 60V Max volt saw. good combo for light trimming with the 20V and medium duty on the other. These are not logging saws. Work well for limbs up to 12 on the 20V ... show more
