It tracks the device in a similar way that your family's Apple products are shown in the Find My app. It updates in the same way as your spouse's iPhone does when they are out and you are looking for them. Drawbacks: The instructions should be more clear and the batteries that came in the package were dead on arrival. I had to buy new batteries before the devices would power up.
