The description here says it will work with BlueTooth for hundreds of feet. What it doesn't tell you is you have to download their app and agree to their "acceptable use policy" and their "privacy policy". It clearly says if you don't do this you CANNOT pair the phone to the thermometer. Why on earth does a thermometer need to connect to an Internet site? Worse yet, if they take the site down, or the Great Firewall of China does its thing, all I have is a paperweight. What if they go out of business, or are bought out, and the new owners/managers don't want to maintain a FREE website for all these thermometers? Having everything in the world be "smart" and connect to the Internet, and REQUIRE that connectivity to work is not good practices. upsides: it just works, turn it on, install the app and once it connects for the first time you just have to launch the app and its connected. the app is good, it could be a little easier to add your own temps, but when you do it once its easy to do it again, they are under the section marked DIY. Works great for beverages/liquids as well as meat. downsides: the only real downside is the lack of decimal places, even one would have better than none, so its hard to judge how accurate it is because you don't know if its indicating 100.9 or 100.0. But I did test is with two other thermometers and it was close usually within a half a degree, but again without decimal places its hard to tell. these are really minor, app has a tiny portion of the screen for ads and I really mean tiny so its not intrusive. Dont like ads in apps but if I have to have them at least they should be tiny like this. Wouldn't mind a paid version of the app that had zero ads though. And this is really very minor, if the alarm is going off and you silence it on your phone its doesn't silence it on the thermometer, but if you silence it on the thermometer it silences the phone's alarm as well. Just wish it worked both ways. Also when you first turn it on or replace the batteries you have to hold down the orange button for like 3 seconds, its not an instant on, so its easy to mistake it for being broken. ... show more

At the outset, for what this thermometer costs, it is a super bargain, and I would buy it again. I tested accuracy with boiling water and swirling ice in a cup of water- both at essentially sea level. It read F 210* in the boiling water, and F 34* in the ice water- almost perfect. WAYYYY more accurate than the probes that came with my Pit Boss pellet grill. I can now probe my smoked meat dishes without worrying about getting someone sick, or drying out my cuts. The bluetooth connection works great, except for one major flaw. The app "disconnects" from the unit anytime the screen shuts off, or you use your phone for a call, or for other apps- hence the 4, instead of 5 star review. This is a particular pain when setting an alarm for a specific temperature. The workaround is using a "keep screen" app that prevents your phone screen from timing out while using it and dedicating your device to strictly using the app-, but that of course is a major battery drain as well as rendering your phone useless for any other use while you are cooking. I just use an old phone since the only data connection you need is wifi for the app, and keep it plugged in. But others might not have that option, so consider this before purchase. The bottom line is, for $14 (which is what I paid with a $3 "instant coupon") it is hard to complain considering the accuracy and ease of use. If you can live with the inconvenience of continually re-connecting the device when your phone rings, or the screen times out, or can use an alternate device you can dedicate, then grab this without hesitation. ... show more

    • It will help you cook a perfect prime rib...no timer needed (ie no guessing)

Salt prime rib- leave in fridge 24 hours- take out 3-4 hours before cooking. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Season the meat. Insert thermometer to the thickest part of the roast. Put in oven. Cook until 120 to 130 degrees on thermometer (depending on your "degree" of medium rare). At desired temp, take out of oven, cover with clean dishtowel- much nicer than tin foil, and let sit for 45 to 60 minutes. Remove thermometer, its job is done and well done mind you. Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Cover roast with LOTS of softened butter and herbs. Put back in oven for 10 minutes (not a second longer). Remove, debone, slice and live the prime rib dream. Let's set the record straight since my first very honest review was apparently rejected because I was trying to clarify a feature that DOES work. Let's just say I almost didn't buy this device while doing my own review reading, but I'm glad I did. I just purchased the dual probe unit and was pleasantly surprised with it's value. 2 key points: 1: When using the App, the Bluetooth interface IS BIDIRECTIONAL so you can not only set up the temps, alarms etc from your phone, but also get feedback on temps etc. The unit can be used without the app, but the interface is basic. Only option is to set a temp. The app offers so much more. (See some app screenshots) 2: The device does NOT connect to your network. Once you install the App, you are connecting to it via Bluetooth only. 2 potential issues I found: Accuracy seems to be off by 2 degrees on mine. That tolerance was in the description. For my uses that doesn't matter, but for you it may. The app, upon installation, requires access to your location. I found this odd but the app can do other smart home functions. You can select location "only while using the app". I haven't tried turning it off in my phone settings yet but that may work. I don't like providing unecessary, big brother access. You may feel the same... This is my initial review after testing it primarily to see if I was going to keep it. Obviously I am keeping mine. Time will tell how it holds up.
