We needed a refill desperately and these were what the manufacturer recommended for our refrigerator. Follow the directions, take your time and you should have no trouble installing your new filter. Be sure to run the new filter into a large pitcher till it runs clear. We did it four times. It was a charcoal color the first time, then eventually ran clear by the fourth pitcher full.     • fits without a problem - does what a filter is supposed to do

This is a water filter. It is supposed to remove 'bad stuff' from water. This one happens to be one that mounts inside a refrigerator. For our environment - city water with a reverse-osmosis system - a lot of the bad stuff has already been removed. It would be nice if the refrigerator would have a means of 'double cycling' the filter since the water is already 'well filtered' prior to this but the appliance doesn't permit that. That complaint is on the manufacturer, not Amazon. This is GE branded so it is not a surprise that it fits and is an exact replacement for the GE branded one that was inside the appliance earlier. Actually replacing it is a simple process (open refrigerator door, open door that covers filter, pivot old filter away from the wall, twist it and pull it out - reverse directions to install new one). The one thing to DO after replacing this filter or any other drinking water filter that contains carbon (good idea on non-carbon ones too) is to run a few pitchers of water through the filter prior to using the filtered water. The carbon wont 'hurt' you but it is not pleasant to see in ice or even liquid water. I use this water for the houseplants. So yea - GE branded replacement filter for a GE branded appliance. This was a 30 second change with no real leakage during the change. It will produce discolored ice for the first few cycles, so plan on throwing the ice out the first day.
