  • Keep your coil down, and go diggin.
Size: Jase AT Max
Good detector, user friendly. I had a lot of fun with this detector. I wanted a good upgrade from the AT pro so I now have the Minelab Equinox 900. Would I buy it again if I were just starting exploring the world of metal detecting? Yes, without a doubt!

  • Garrett delivered
Size: AT Max
There's a lot of youtube reviews that do the unit justice, so I'll keep this short. Like a lot of guys, I upgraded from the AT Pro. Simply put, the Max works great on land and fresh water. The wireless headphones are a big improvement over the AT Pro. The upgraded grip is nice, but I didn't mind the foam grip on the Pro. Sensitivity is definitely improved, you'll find more goodies in hunted out areas. The metal disc is great and is easy to tell most metal junk like nails, and even most metal bottle caps from a coin. FINALLY, an all metal mode, this is where the Max really shines. If you're upgrading from the Pro, keep in mind the Max has only Pro tones. That's a good thing for a serious detectorist, but maybe not for a noob. My one gripe? Like most others, I could not get it to work in salt water or wet salt water sand. Single freq VLF detectors like the Garrett AT series just don't work well in salt water like pulse and multi-frequency detectors do. ... show more

  • Lots of Fun - Pain in the Butt to find places to MD
Size: AT Max w/ PPAT & Hat
The metal detector itself is great. I did get a crazy amount of static while on a sandy beach and next to another person with a MD (and not sure exactly where the static came from). I changed the frequency and that helped for a minute but it came back after a little while. I'm not sure if it was dying batteries, mineralized ground (it was sand on an artificial beach with really dense clay about +36" under, nails all over the place too, on a beach!), or the headphones that was causing the interference/noise. Anyways, for anyone who is willing to read a manual a couple times and watch a couple hours of youtube, while just going out and tinkering, it should be pretty straight forward. My only regret is not researching how difficult it is to find a place to metal detect. I doubt I would have gotten one otherwise. Check you local ordinances! A lot of cities and parks have an outright ban on metal detecting. A lot of places that you think you would be able to go, like city parks, have "No Digging" posted in the rules because the first couple waves of hobbyist metal detectors (and pirates) didn't fill in their holes and ruined it for everyone behind them. If you're not afraid to door knock and ask people if you can MD on private property, then go for it. If you're super introverted, and don't want to grow out of your shell, look for a different hobby. ... show more

  • Garrett AT Max Metal Detector
Size: AT Max w/ PPAT & Hat
First, what I like about the AT Max. I like that it has a back lit screen. I like the wireless headphones and pin pointer, they are particularly helpful for the hearing impaired like myself. I like that the screen has an indicator to help center on your find. I like that it uses AA size batteries and that they last a respectable amount of time. I especially like the the "iron audio" button which does a great job of keeping one from digging up steel junk. I like that it has a volume control on both the headphones and the unit itself. I like that it is waterproof to 10 feet, though I will not be using something this expensive under water (the coil, maybe but not the controller.) While I am relatively new to met/det'g with this being my 3rd one, I will say I like the AT Max a lot. And would recommend it to anyone that has the money to buy one. Now, the other stuff. These are not complaints as much as they are recommendations to Garrett. For whatever reason when pin pointing, I find the depth indicator seems to work for a second or two on pressing the "pinpoint" button and then freezes on 2". I don't know if this is normal or if mine has a problem (everything else seems to be OK.) One other thing is if you are using it in the shade and facing the sun, the pin pointer indicator scale is difficult to see, it seems to be covered by the overlay on the screen. Turning your back to the sun takes care of this problem. If this unit turns out to be trouble free for years, I will consider the money well spent, durability is a key value to me. As to if the unit will do the job of metal detecting, I assure you it will. It will find tiny stuff deep. It is seldom wrong if it detects copper or silver. A gold ring and an aluminum drink tab registers almost alike and so far are difficult for me to tell apart. Perhaps, with more time and experience I will learn enough to tell the difference. So, overall, I give this metal detector very, very good rating. ... show more
