  • Be prepared to lose 1/3rd of your screen
Style: GPS
First the pros: Nice screen size. Rugged, dropped it on hard asphalt a couple of times and didn't even scratch it. Pretty decent navigation UI. Won't overheat and shut down like a phone. Weatherproof. Cons: Basecamp software is horrible. Very confusing,non-intuitive and overly complicated (am I planning a trip, laying down a route, hiking ?) . many times you export a route to the GPS and it will still redo the path based on device settings, completely ignoring any custom routing you may have done in the desktop app. You really need to keep one eye on the darn thing and make sure it's not going to lead you down the garden path. The biggest problem though is the new "Incident detection" system, which is supposed to pair with a phone to send an SMS to designated contact if the device thinks you've been in an accident. Unfortunately, this "detection" is set off by a fruitfly passing within 10 feet of your motorcycle. I rode 9000 miles last month and the on-device popup (which consumes 1/3rd of your screen) was on for pretty much the whole time. There is no way to turn this feature off, and it does not matter if you have no phone connected or SMS notification number configured. Apparently Garmin has promised to fix this in a future update, so maybe wait for that update. Or look at advrider forums on advice on how to use a rugged $50 phone instead. ... show more

  • Great unit for the price.
Style: GPS
Great unit. Easy to install with the included equipment. I’ve run it for close to 5,500 miles now and it’s performed very well. Ran it side by side with Waze over the course of 3,600 miles through WA, OR, and NV last month and it did real well. It even outperformed Waze when routing through central OR, saving me 1.5 hours compared to Waze. I guess Garmin finally figured out Oregon? That’s amazing in and of itself. ... show more

  • It's okay, but it's not Google Maps
Style: GPS
I like a GPS on my motorcycle because I prefer my phone on my body. That's partly because I may need my phone in the event my machine and I are separated ( it has happened), and also because I have drowned two iPhones navigating in the rain. I purchased this model because my two previous Zumos quit working (!) and this one offered new features at a price point I could choke down if not embrace warmly. Using it is a learning curve; you have to learn to speak Garmin. My initial preferences caused it to offer some weird routing decisions. I'll learn. The bluetooth pairing to my phone seems okay, but I haven't figured out how to use all the benefits that is supposed to offer (music, traffic, weather, hands-free phone use). The pairing with my Sena headset seems finicky and unreliable. I'll keep it and use it but in this day, I don't understand why it feels like I'm struggling with 20 year old technology. Surely a company that creates glass cockpits for airliners has the know-how to make a user-friendly GPS that would function more like, oh, I dunno, Google Maps? ... show more

  • 1000 Times better than useing your cell phone.
Style: GPS
Takes a little getting used to. But works well, and love the "Live View" feature that is available once paired with your phone. I recently did a 1500 mile ride (Iron Butt) and was able to share my ride with friends and family that were interested. So much better than trying to use your cell phone and google maps to navigate. ... show more

  • Terrible
Style: GPS
I have been using this GPS for over a year and about 10,000 miles. Pros: The building quality is good and the mounting was easy. It has been through many rain storms and still works fine. The screen does a good job of being mostly anti-glare. Cons: I hate this thing. We just don't get along. The phone app is so invasive I had to uninstall it. The only way to close the app is to turn off bluetooth. So then whenever you turn on your bluetooth for your car or ear buds, the app is running again. What a joke, no other app I have ever used is so invasive. I found it much less annoying to use my phone as a wireless access point and just connect to its wifi. This GPS feels like 20 year old technology, and I used to love my old Garmins from 20 years ago. It is just very hard to get this GPS to plan a good route or respond to your driving styles. For example, it only gives you one route at the start, you can't select alternate routes like Google Map or Waze. If you decide to take a different major highway to get to your destination, it can't figure out you are going a different way even after 45 minutes of it telling you to make a u-turn every half mile. I find myself having to stop frequently to get my phone out and redirect this thing. It doesn't show live traffic. It will have a small pop up screen to tell you if there is an accident ahead and ask if you want to redirect. However, the buttons are so small, that you can't really safely use them if you are actually riding the bike. The zooming in/out while riding is terrible. It doesn't do it as well as my Garmins did 20 years ago. It is nearly impossible to do while actually riding, and a lot of times, you miss the + or - signs and get stuck in some mode that you have to back out of to get back to the normal view. There are many rural areas where it doesn't even show county roads, just blank white areas. I've tried zooming in and out, but see the note above about how hard that is, but many of the roads are just not there at any zoom level. This thing just takes a lot of the fun out of riding a motorcycle. I am going to throw it away and find something better. ... show more
