  • Pump questionable, canister fantastic
Pattern Name: 15L, Twin Inlets
This is our third FZone canister filter. We are extremely satisfied with the build quality and operation of these filters. They are so much better and serviceable than our previous plastic canister filters. We’ll never go back. I like that the pump is replaceable and that the plumbing is all exposed. Leaks are easily identifiable and corrected. Cleaning and replacing the media is straightforward and simple. We’ve not had any experience of main O-ring failures as I’ve seen in other reviews. Our canisters have never displaced or malformed the O-ring. Perhaps other’s failures are a minority due to slight manufacturing tolerances. The pump is a newer design from fzone and replacing it works best for us. The previous design (all black) was my favorite even if it was a bit less efficient. The new pump design (with blue bell housing and connectors) has a poorer build quality and tolerances. If you are serious about aquariums this is a logical upgrade, short of building a sump. I think this is the best value for canister filters available today notwithstanding the pump. I would purchase this canister filter again. ... show more

  • One step forward and one back. Updated
Pattern Name: 15L, Twin Inlets
I own 3 of these. Two of the old design without the pump and one of the new design that includes the pump. The old design had a somewhat serious flaw. There was a gap between the lip where the oring sits and the side of the canister. I shined a light on the gap and i could the see the outside of the canister behind the collar. This caused the oring to deform and caused catastrophic leaking. By leaking I mean flooding. Luckily, I had a spare oring. The new design fixed this problem. There is no gap and the collar on the outside has welding points on the bottom. The problem now is with the pump that is supplied with the new version. It's like a toy. I would much rather have the new canister without the pump and accessories. The accessories are all 5/8" but the pump has larger input/ output connections. The hose was pre-installed to the pump input and output. I thought this was strange. But I decided to upgrade to 3/4" tubing and I didn't like the ugly green hose that came with it. To my horror, the green hose was glued to the input/output of the pump! It was absolute torture taking it off. Also, on the new design, the metal pump base is welded to the lid. It's like they're forcing you to use their pump. The pump seems powerful for such a little pump. I really like the dc controller. But the plastic seems flimsy. My pump has a slight leak. The screws to tighten the pump cover are tiny and recessed. I'm still looking for a tool that can be used to tighten the cover. These screws have to be removed to service the pump. What were they thinking with this pump? I'm looking for a new backup pump. I guess I'm going to have to find someway to remove the metal pump base that is welded to the lid of necessary. Another project! Update 11/29/22 Well I didn't expect to have to replace the pump this quickly, but it stopped working after two weeks with an error code, err6. This error states that the pump is dead and you need replace it. I returned the pump to Amazon. I really like the canister and I didn't want to send the whole thing back. We'll see what they do about it. I'll leave my rating at 3 stars because I anticipated having to do this. 5 stars for the canister. ... show more

  • Great filter that requires some extra steps to get going
Pattern Name: 15L, Twin Inlets
Functionally and aesthetically, this filter is incredible. The space for media exceeds any comparable filter and it has the sleek, minimalist appearance of ADA filters for a fraction of the cost. Furthermore, the controllable pump is a huge bonus considering most filters do not offer any such adjustability. Speaking of the pump, be sure that you purchase the appropriately sized pump as recommended in the description as well as the acrylic block to secure it to the filter body itself. DO NOT ignore the O rings and hose clamps that are included. if you do not install these the connections WILL leak. Don't make my mistake. :p I found that the adhesive on the acrylic block came lose, perhaps due to me not pressing it down firmly enough and some water seeping in during the leaking. A bit of super glue solved that issue however. I am running the 800 model pump at only 40% on my 40 breeder so there's more than enough power there for a much larger aquarium too. Note that the filter is not self primping, so to start it, simply suck on the end of the intake hose such that water flows into the outflow hose, fills the filter, and proceeds through the intake hose (direct the water into a bucket.) Altogether, I am very pleased with the filter and if you are willing to forgo some of the bells and whistles of brands like fluval and oase in return for an attractive and powerful filter with a prodigious media capacity and quiet, adjustable pump then this is the perfect choice for you! ... show more

  • High quality filter
Pattern Name: 15L, Single Inlet
I have been a fan of the ADA Super Jet filter for a while, but couldn’t justify the high price. The Astra-Stream seems to be a great alternative in terms of functionality and sleek design. The 15L canister provides a ton of room for biological and mechanical filtration, which will keep my water crystal clear. The seals seem solid and have not shown any signs of leaking. The pump is powerful and very quiet vs traditional canister filters. I love that you can control the flow via a controller and it even has a “feed” button, which pauses the pump during feedings. This obviously cuts down on fish food being blown everywhere and going to waste. Lastly, the stainless steel design is very attractive and almost needs to be on display in my fish room. ... show more
