  • What a fun garden tool
Style: Leaf Shredder
What a great tool! Shreds well, good motor, but the frame is not the sturdiest, which means it's lightweight and easy to set up, but you have to be careful when rotating the hopper down for storage - the 2 screws on the side tend to pop out, because the hopper is just a bit wider than the opening between the legs. Take great care in removing from the box and during assembly. In my haste and excitement, I cracked the hopper, which I easily repaired with duct tape (gorilla tape) - holding up great. January 2017 was the 2nd season I used this, really getting the hang of it. It's all in the timing.... Throughout the fall, when I had a lot of dry leaves, I bagged them, raked onto tarps, garbage bags - and stored in the garage and porch until I had the time to set up and use the shredder (and an empty composter to put them in...after using up last year's compost...) Once I was ready to shred, I spent a lot of time sorting through the leaves before shredding to remove any branches, twigs, acorns and stones, so these don't beat up the strings or fly out of the shreeder. This was taking too long, so I started to sort while shredding: Put the leaves into a trash can, leaned it over the side of the shredder, and did a quick sort before putting into shredder, right on the side of the can. Much faster! Worked fine. If I could hear a twig or branch stuck, I quickly turned off the shredder and cleared it and continued. Used a blower periodically to clear the hopper and the foam filter. Any leaf piles that were wet or had lots of twigs etc. I skipped shredding and used for township pickup from street or leaf bags..... Plenty of dry leaves to work with. Not worth the time to sort every last bit of it, just focus on the dry leaves. Resulting compost is fantastic. I bury the plastic composters into the ground a bit and put the shredded leaves in, water them down (using a hose - takes a LOT of water to get all these shredded leaves wet), add some soil, well-rotted compost, manure fertilizer, food waste, (old salt hay, cardboard, coffee grinds, etc.) building up layers until the composter is full. Keep turning it, aerating. A million red worms come up out of the soil and get to work. I use one composter to keep adding food waste and leave the other one to cook. Storing 5 bags of dry shredded leaves until I set up a 3rd composter. Just got a Geobin... will try that next. ... show more

  • Flowtron Electric Leaf Shredder #LE-900
Style: Leaf Shredder
Let me begin by saying I am very happy with this machine! We have a 10HP chipper/shredder that my husband can't start, much less myself. We also have 1/2 acre lot full of mature trees, oaks, maples, poplars, etc. and a LOT of leaves each year. I was searching for something that would chop the leaves up and found this Flowtron Leaf Shredder. My husband was very skeptical, and after I read a lot of the reviews, I was almost hestitant to purchase one, but I am SO GLAD I DID! First of all, it was not that hard to put together. I did it myself (although a little help putting the stand on would have been nice) with absolutely no problems! If you have any common sense, you can put this together easily! After putting it together, I couldn't wait to try it out. My only complaint is that I wish I had found this machine years ago! I have nothing but good things to say about it! It is designed for leaves and leaves it does! The string is simple to replace, and I do mean simple! It is NOT that noisy, much easier on the ears than a leaf blower. I used a collapsable leaf basket under it and that made it even better! I was very impressed at how fine the leaves were chopped up, and I just put them back around my plants for great mulch! I can only add that I am not that young (almost 60) and this machine made our leaf problem simple to deal with! If it lasts only one season, it was worth every penny! And the shipping from Amazon was exceptionally fast! I am very, very, very happy with this product! And I give it more than the 5 stars! ****4 YEARS LATER!!! We are both still very happy with this machine! It has served us well for many fall seasons! Even my husband has been won over! We have used a little heavier line in it, and it works even better! I stand by my first review that it is well worth the money! Yes, it has it's limitations (no sticks or twigs), but for leaves you can't beat it! (We do wear a dust mask, but it common sense! You are chopping dry leaves, of course there is going to be dust!) ... show more

  • Just remember the key words here....."light duty".....!
Style: Leaf Shredder
My Flowtron was delivered very promptly. After reading the reviews and actually glancing briefly at the operation manual, I jumped right in on the assembly. It's not the easiest thingy I've ever put together but it's still not as bad as a bicycle or a swing set. Anyway, I decided to add a few 1/8" pop rivets w/ back-up washers to the funnel where it joins together and this seems to have helped keep it together. The stand did not work for me, I put the whole contraption on top of a large municipal garbage can on wheels and just dump the mulch around the yard. I change the strings after each can full, it only takes a minute and no tools are needed. Don't forget to clean the air filter by beating it up against the nearest downwind tree. The replacement strings ("blades"?) don't have to be purchased from Flowtron, just use any trimmer line with the correct diameter (.080 I think). (HINT: two strands of .040 work just as good as a single strand of .080). Anyway, the unit performs like a champ as long as you don't try to push it too far. I had no problems whatsoever with it. If you overload it by jamming too much at one time down it's throat or putting pine cones or large twings into it, it will surely bust something. Use as much protective equipment as you can jam on your body...I used a top quality respirator (not a cheap paper dust mask), the whole operation is very dusty. I also used ear plugs and gloves. Eye protection is an absolute must, the machine throws out lots of debris. I really like this little machine, it beats the heck out of expensive clear leaf bags and the resulting mulch is free. My wife did most of the raking and I took care of the dusty, noisy part. I would say go ahead and get one but remember it's limitations and take it slowly until you get the hang of it. ... show more
