Product: Etekcity Lasergrip 800 Digital Infrared Thermometer Gun Rating: 4.5 of 5 (excellent) I cook a lot with cast iron flat griddles, both small and large ... a surface wholly unsuited for corded digital temperature probes, because at the sort of temperatures they’re most commonly used at (450-600F) if the droopy cord connecting the probe to the sensor touches the surface for anything longer than a brief instant, it’s toast, and you have to buy a new one. I’ve ruined several probes that way over the years, and it rapidly becomes annoying. To date, my favorite solution by far is one of the latest generation hand-held wireless Infrared Sensor Guns like the Etekcity Lasergrip 800, which cost me an extremely reasonable and affordable $25 usd in 2017. Anytime I heat a pot of oil for deep-frying, or use a saucier to reduce braising liquid into a thick sweet glaze, or if I use my griddles for things like making Lebanese mountain bread, homemade tortillas, quesadillas, pancakes, fermented dosa crepes, pressed sandwiches (paninis & tortas), burgers, steaks, bacon, blackened fish, eggs, et al., the Etekcity 800 is incredibly handy for rapidly spot-checking the temperature status of your griddle (so you can finesse it accordingly), and also finding any patterns of uneven heating that occur in your setup {TIP: CI is a poor thermal conductor, therefore the slower you heat it, the more evenly it heats}. Different foods like different temperatures too. For example, I like to work at around 500-550F when searing off freshly stretched mountain bread (see photo), which is very thin, and prone to overcooking if your griddle/plancha is too hot. Things like crepes and dosas are even more temperature sensitive, and a thermal gun is indispensable for helping you to stay in the ideal temp range, for significantly better results and less food waste. Likes: * Ergonomic: It’s very fast (under 1 sec), accurate (+/- 2%), lightweight (4 oz), easy to use (very simple and intuitive - reading the manual is purely optional), easy to read, and has a thermal range (-58F to +1382F) that fully covers all my needs, and with plenty of room to spare. * Battery: The specs list 14hrs of cumulative runtime per 9v battery, which is more than enough to last you a year or more, even with regular daily use. * Sensor Aperture: This unit features a sensor with a nice high DSR rating of 16:1 (read: tight aperture), meaning if you hold it at the recomended distance of 14.17 inches, the circular diameter of the region being sensed centered on the siming dot is 1/16th of that, or roughly 0.88 inch (about midway in size between a Nickel and a Quarter). Minor Nits: * Battery (-1/2 star): I’m a big believer in eco-friendly rechargeable, but the designers of this gun opted for a 9v battery design, which while great for low-draw devices like smoke detectors is easily my least favorite, and least efficient formats when it comes to rechargeables. Although there may be some valid technical reasons for the 9v use, I really wish they’d gone with 3.7v 18650’s instead, or perhaps 1.2v AAAs, both of which are highly friendly to low-self-discharge 1000+ cycle rechargeables, and are easily available. * Sensor Reticle (-1/2 star): First, some disambiguation - although this product prominently mentions “laser” in the name, it only uses the laser to provide a single bright dot (your aiming reticle) so you can see where you’re pointing the sensor - the laser is NOT the actual sensing mechanism, nor does the diameter of the dot reflect the diameter of the region being sensed, which many may find confusing or unintuitive. A better pointer design would be a laser ring (multiple dots), instead of a singular dot, with the diameter of the ring matching the DSR rating of the sensor aperture, so that you can see EXACTLY the size of the area being sensed at any given range. Despite these 2 minor nits, I still highly recommend this device, which has become one of my top 10 favorite culinary tools in my kitchen.

Very user-friendly, function is intuitive, simple to use. The handle fits my large hands well. Display is easy to read. Controls are clear and uncomplicated. The provided instruction sheet is well-written and concise. Within the first five minutes after turning it on for the first time, I checked various areas within my refrigerator and freezer and learned a lot about the different temperatures inside. There were some surprises. I also went around the house and identified a few electronic devices that are much warmer than I expected, in particular my 7-channel home theater receiver showed 96 degrees F on its face! I made a decision to power it all the way off when I am not using it. That should shave a little off of my high power bill. Excellent device, does exactly what the manufacturer claims. It won't handle very high temperatures such as those you would need to check whether a piece of hot steel has reached its critical temperature, but there are other models available that will do that job. But this one has a wide enough range that many people would find it useful for casual or professional applications. UPDATE 3/14/2026 - After a little over five years, I am knocking one star off of the score for this thermometer. It still works perfectly, however the case is becoming sticky and I haven't figured out how to deal with that yet. I still recommend this product because it works as advertised and is a good value.

It came with everything that it said it would and I tried it immediately out of the package. I got the battery, device, and the case for it in the package. It got the temperature of the house within 2 degrees and the temperature of people within 3. So, it definetly worked but, since I bought this for a high temperature science experiment I wanted to make sure that it reached that temperature. I bought this to take the temperature for a science experiment of combining potassium permanganate and glycerin. Since I knew it got over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit I bought this thermometer which went up to 750 degrees Celsius (1382 F). I did the experiment today. Sometimes it read "Hi" (I did the experiment 5 times) but a couple of times it actually gave me a reading above 750 C consistently! I got a reading of 830 C, 836 C and 763 C. That means not only does this thermometer work, but it greatly exceeded my expectations. Keep in mind, I'd say this thermometer is about 3% off for F temperatures. That means at 100 F its +/- 3, but at 1000 F its 30 F off. In the case of this experiment, this was not of extreme importance. Because of this you cant use this for super accurate readings.You must read all Farenheit values above 999.9 F in C since it can only display 3 digits and one decimal place. Once you switch it though it works perfect! If you are using it to test the temperature of your food coming out of the microwave or a kids science experiment its perfect! I use it alllllllll the time since I bought it.

I got the Lasergrip 800 two weeks back. Its an awesome instrument to have because you can use it to measure temperatures when you actually have a need for it (or you can play around with it by pointing it inside your refrigerator, on hot stove element etc to entertain!!). I really like it and would like to break my review in pros and cons of the Lasergrip 800: PROS: 1. First up, it feels good in hand. The plastic its made of is good quality, its ergonomic to handle and its pretty light-weight. 2. I tried it on multiple things (water at different temperatures) with a thermometer dipped in it and the temperature was with agreement with what was shown on thermometer (plus/minus 1oC). 3. It has a range of -50 to 750oC, which pretty much covers everything under the sun (but not the sun of course ;). 4. It show temperature in Fahrenheit as well as Centigrade, saving you the time to use an app to convert ;) 5. The display is big with huge, easy to read letters (photos attached). It can be backlit for easy reading, if using the Lasergrip at night. 6. It takes 9-volt battery (instead of a AA battery) that means it lasts longer and you wont have to worry about changing the batteries too often. 7. There is not off switch and it switches off after a few seconds of inactivity, thus extending the battery life even more. 8. One of the good things I liked is that it comes with a detailed manual (photos attached) and one can easily get to know how to use the instrument. 9. The price is worth for such an instrument. CONS: 1. Size of the lasergrip is a bit on larger side. Would have been good to have it a little smaller, but that is definitely not a deal breaker 2. Since it uses laser, its advisable to have a cap on the end that emits laser light, for extra protection. In summary, I am glad to have got this and I am enjoying using the laser grip. I would definitely recommend it for a handyman and also to have it at home for personal use if you regularly need it to check tempratures.

Serves the purpose in which I bought it for. I use it for frying pans. Don't laugh because it works GREAT. No more guessing when my pan is hot enough or too hot. I heat my pans slowly to desired temp as not to warp them. Yes....I'm a bit anal like that. I leave it in the cupboard, grab it, pull the trigger and in seconds it tells me the pan temp, and it turns itself off afterwards. It really is very convenient. Some people have complained that the laser light is not aligned with the temperature sensor. I have no issues with mine. I will say that for it to be accurate, you need to align the two laser dots until they become"one", which is about 15 inches from the heat source. It clearly states that. If your trying to take a reading from across the room, it will not be accurate. I'm docking it one star because I can't seem to figure out the voltage reading. Mine did not come with a manual. I've been to their website, and can't find a manual for this model. Nothing I've tried works. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but it should tell you how to use that feature. All in all, it's a nice, inexpensive Infrared Thermometer. It even comes with a battery. Update: A representative from Etekcity contacted me and emailed me a manual and advised me that they were uploading the manual to their website. Turns out I was not using the voltage detection properly. After reading the instructions, it does work as advertised. It doesn't give you a voltage reading, just an audible tone. I was looking for an actual number. So this is really only good for "detection". Which, by the way, is what it is advertised as. DOH!! Thank you for your great customer service!
