I use this to monitor the temperature of the metal in my lead pot used for bullet casting were temperature is critical in obtaining good results . It works very well and I am glad I bought it. Its a lot easier to use than the old, long probe, analog unit whose probe was broken off while on the bench. I have a Lee melting pot for casting things and it is important to keep track of the metal temperature for proper casting. This thermometer is accurate and easy to use along with being fast. I have mechanical thermometers that are fine but tend to get in the way because they need something to hang them on. This one is fast to use, you turn it on and stick the probe a couple inches into the metal and within a few seconds you have a reading. It all takes less than a minute so it doesn't interrupt your casting at all. A great product I would recommend for anyone needing such a tool. ... show more

    • Seems to work very well
We purchased a small lead pot for work (building experimental lead acid batteries) that does not have a thermostat on it, and only has numbers 1-10. When we cast, we target a specific temperature to make sure we have enough working time but that it is not too hot as to cause issues over melting our plates. This seems to work quite well. It is quite close to what our thermal camera shows so we're confident using it when building our cells. Overall great buy at a solid price point. The only criticism is the port to connect the thermocouple to the device is already loose. If that had not happened, it would be a 5* ... show more

Havent tried it yet but it should be easier than my old dial thermometer method! We'll compare them the next time I cast lead. I bought it because of percieved accuracy of digitl electronic vs mechanical dial version. I melt a lot of lead (or at least I used to!) mainly from wheel weights. (when you can find any- I do have a pretty decent stash still!) Now a days, there's a lot of non lead wheel weights out there and lots of them are zinc. If you get any zinc in a batch of lead, you might as well toss it because the entire batch becomes the consistancy of overcooked oat meal! It will not flow now will it cast! Luckily, zinc melts at a higher temperature than lead and I keep the lead pot at good safe temerature and the zinc wont melty but float to the top and I skim it off like the dross and steel clips. This will help me maintain proper temperature control of the batch. I have no reason to believe this wont work properly but will update this review when I do break out the lead furnace! Lyman has always produced good stuff for us handloaders and I expect this gizmo to be up to Lyman's quality standards ... show more
