I have this same model from about 2 years ago, which uses 9-volt batteries. No hardship, but I wanted to get one that used AAA batteries, if they made one. Versus my Instant-Read contact thermometers, this one reads a little higher on some things, (maybe most things, about 8 or 10 degrees), like boiling water; it also does not like shiny objects as others have mentioned. It's quick and easy to use. I use it when boiling water, to put 203 degree water in my French Press and it's very helpful; (I know, I could buy an electric kettle). I also use it for pan temperatures before putting food in, not forgetting the above mentioned caveats. NOT product specific, but when the included batteries go out, I would ONLY use rechargeable AAA batteries; especially in flashlights and TV remote controls, I have NEVER used a regular AAA battery that did NOT leak acid; some of you know that this is the absolute truth! Purchased this to find which light ballast was going bad, as I couldn't find it manually. Worked great as I went from light to light. Turns out it wasn't a ballast after all, but a light attached to a track system. Worth the price even if I never use it again as I had spent a lot of time looking for the problem. Works great and can't really beat it for the price. Understanding how to use it was easy. I can't attest to its accuracy since I have nothing much to compare it to. I was installing some solar screens and bought the thermometer to measure the heat blocking effectiveness of the screens by measuring the carpet temperature with the sun shining on it through the windows with and without the solar screens. The temperature readings seemed believable. The table of emissivity setting for various materials included with the instructions was a bit brief so I located online and printed a more comprehensive table. Given its affordable cost, I'm not surprised at some of its limitations. However, if you take several readings and average them, it's an incredibly useful tool for judging temperature of cooking surfaces. This thermometer is fast and handy. I bought it to find out which wheel was dragging on my van, but apparently the problem resolved itself without intervention. I have found the thermometer to be helpful for many things, from measuring pavement temperature for the wow factor, to making sure the oil in my frying pan is hot enough.
