  • Epson sold me on 3LCD
I bought this to replace an older Optoma that had an issue with the main HDMI port. But I had already been looking to switch to a 3LCD projector because I could certainly notice the rainbow effect that is common in DLP projectors. I was initially a little nervous about the manual focus options on this Epson but man, I have been able to dial this thing in WAY more perfectly to my screen than I ever imagined. I strongly suggest watching some videos on how to calibrate the LCD chips as it will really improve your image quality and I must say, I am quite satisfied with the quality indeed! The projector is actually quieter than my Optoma was and although it is larger and heavier, it isn’t any more obvious than the old one. As typical for a 3LCD, it is brighter than the DLP and as an added bonus, the 3D glasses I had for my Samsung 3D TV are compatible with it. Excellent projector for the money and the picture quality is superb! ... show more

  • It's a Fiesta!
Out of the box, it's just plain amazing, to avoid too many technical explanations! My projector location is offset at the rear of a 13 x 19 ft room. It took maybe five minutes to dial in the image to exactly fill my 106 inch, 16:9 Elite screen. Even with half of the great room lights on, the pattern made focusing and image centering a satisfying as opposed to frustrating operation. Focusing was very precise. I saw no variation in line sharpness on the entire screen. Without using keystone correction, the offset image appear correct. My Epson 8350 was getting rather dim, and although it displayed Blu-Ray content with appropriate detail, it's just so-so with older material. But it was big screen filling, so I accepted that. The 4K bug finally bit though, so after a lot of comparison shopping, I ordered a Refurbished Epson 3800. I was not prepared! Blu-ray material looks much brighter with an obvious improvement in contrast. Just glanced at a little Blu-Ray video, before diving into into an old DVD musical collection. I had just watched 1941 Fiesta, a Technicolor musical set in Mexico on the 8350. There was so little detail, I just attributed it to a poor DVD copy. Not so! Playing the same movie on the 3800, colors are fully saturated, the senoritas dresses flash brilliantly white against backgrounds that range down to practically black. Watching 4:3 movie content on a 16:9 screen usually causes a lot of distracting grey sidebars. The 3800's superior contrast ratio reduced the spill to all but unnoticeable levels. The most impressive thing? Even though I knew I was watching a standard definition video, there was a markedly improved crispness to the images. So, maybe, upscaling is a real thing? I am using my regular music room audio equipment, so I did not audit the included loudspeakers. It wouldn't be fair to compare them to James B. Lansing "Centuries," would it? The only possible downside is the absence of any older video input modes. It is pretty easy to find S-video to HDMI convertors on Amazon, so that's no biggy. All in all, I'm eager to get back to watching bigger, brighter, clearer movies. I'll check in later when I can report on my 4K experience. ... show more

  • My 5th projector and WOW! Epson 3800 is better than the ViewSonic LX700-4K and Epson 2250
I bought a Certified Renewed Epson 3800 for $1200. This is my 5th projector and it's the best. My requirements are long zoom to be 16' away. (Started in 2020 with 1st cheapo $80 which I returned, 2nd was $500 Epson 880 which had too much oversplash gray area and poor zoom so I couldn't size to the 150 in screen at 16' away, 3rd was $700 Epson 2250 (1080P) which I loved and still have for 5 years. 4th was $1500 Viewsonic 4k which did not specify the contrast ratio because the picture was so washed out so I returned it. 5th is this $1200 factory renewed Epson 3800 (4k) and wow! I upgraded to the Epson 3800 and it's better than both the Epson 2250 (now 5 years old with a 2 month old bulb): The 3800 is not clearer but it's way better at: 1) quieter 2) way more lens shifting in vertical. Can also do horizontal lens shifting. 3) darker areas don't look like a black blob 4) more natural color 5) better remote 6) pattern box and tons of adjustments to make the shape and RGB colors calibrate. CON: - a little bigger but not bad. - focus is not perfect across the whole screen. Either the center or corners are sharp. ----- Compared to the ViewSonic LX700-4K: I wanted so much to love the ViewSonic LX700-4K because it's 4k and laser. Unfortunately, picture was so washed out (worse than my Epson 2250 at 1080P with 1:70k contrast) so I returned the Viewsonic. The Viewsonic's 1.36x zoom is better than average but still not as good as my Epson 2250 at 1.6x zoom, so the Epson has no oversplash beyond the screen. ... show more

  • Amazing quality and great living room projector
Before I had this, I had a BenQ w1070. My biggest complaint with that scream was that the room had to be pitch black to not look washed out. The picture quality was fine. The Epson 3800 has a wonderful picture quality. The blacks look black and the colors seem realistic. Most important, I have used this projector with a lot of ambient light, both from lamps and overhead lights as well as daylight. It looks great. It doesn’t look washed out at all. The frame rate is tremendous and seems steady. ... show more

  • Already returned
Straight out of the box, the refurbished projector came without a lens cap attached (it was rolling around in the box). Hook up the projector and immediately there was a big red spot on the screen. Has something to do with the lens as the spot would move with the picture when doing lens shift. I tried my best to ignore it but I just couldn’t, completely ruined and dark part of the movie we watched. Returning the refurbished unit and buying a brand new one instead. ... show more
