So, first thing you need to know is that you don't plug this into your lighter outlet in the car. I know, right? It's so much easier to plug everything in there. I saw this weird plug and had no idea where I'd plug something like that into a car. Turns out, it was in some hidden area underneath where my steering wheel was. I had to literally crawl on the ground to find it! I plugged it in and it did automatically read my VIN, and didn't report any codes (true, I don't have any lights at the moment). It was also able to tell me how my battery was doing (good, which was also what the service shop told me recently). There were a LOT of other choices though, that were like Greek to me. The instruction leaflet isn't the easiest to follow, but I know there are instructional videos online somewhere! My boyfriend has a light on in his car for something that was just fixed, and tried plugging it into his car - it didn't read a code, but he thought that was likely because they reset it properly when they fixed the issue. Also, he has an older car. This little device has an option to 'clear codes' - which I'm thinking you don't want to mess with unless you really know what you are doing. You don't want to clear a code that hasn't been fixed. The screen lights up very bright and is easy to read even in the daylight... it's also very easy to scroll through the selections and options. It definitely has a learning curve to knowing what each of the options are, but based off what it was able to tell me, I think it'll be pretty handy. I should get my notification for changing my oil in the next couple of months, I plan on plugging this baby in and seeing if it tells me I need my oil changed. That will be the final proof I need!

I tried this one three of my vehicles and it was successful at connecting and pulling data. However, there is a bunch of sub-menus that do not seem to do anything. I also could not get the battery chart to work. It does, however connect without any issues and can clear the CEL (as well as reference the codes). I found it pretty easy to do simple code pulls/resets but just had some other data in the menus that didn't really seem to be needed. The LCD backlight is also very dim to see in bright light but was usable. For an all-in-one OBD2 tool, it does work fine if you want a simple tool that pulls/reads codes.

I did find that this worked extremely well at reading all of the data that is on the OBD port on my 1st gen V6 Toyota Tacoma and providing very detailed data for all the sensor points on that truck. But I did find that this has a pretty major flaw when reading live data and having it graph that data. When you are having it actively poll the OBD port it will cause the vehicle to put the ABS system into a test mode and it will cause the ABS system to not fully function to the Toyota specifications. So this cannot be used long term to log vehicle data on that specific vehicle. Outside of that test/fault the device works just as good if not better than code scanners that are 4x the price. Overall other than the test/fault I was expecting with the scan tool, this is an excellent versatile compact vehicle scanner. It is staying a tool in my toolbox for sure!

Whenever a warning light appeared on my dashboard I would go to my neighborhood auto parts store and borrow their reader. Then they stopped loaning (perhaps because someone walked off with one?) and instead did the reading and reset it for me. Then they stopped doing this altogether due to some liability concern that someone might damage their own car (unlikely). Sometimes a dash light will be accidentally tripped on and all that is needed is a reset (has anyone ever forgotten to put their gas cap back on after filling up?). I tried buying my own reader but at the time they were quite expensive. This one is very reasonably priced and it works for all of my needs. I am quite familiar with the basics of car repair and I used to do many of my own repairs. If you are not familiar with the basics of how a car works, this probably is not for you. Best to have a good mechanic do your analysis.
