  • An updated ecobee with great functionality
Style: Ecobee Smart Thermostat Sensor
We've had a few smart thermostats, and our favorite was an older ecobee, and this one is definitely an improvement, albeit it's also quite expensive. Whether or not you really want this model depends on what you plan to do with it. Installation was very easy. The included instructions and app are slick and as long as you had a C wire, it's almost foolproof to swap a thermostat out. I will say, look hard for that C wire. Our new home had one, but it was tucked into the wall. I would suggest looking at your circuit board. On homes built in the last 20 years, there's often a common wire running constant voltage with something plugged into it (And it is OK to plug more than one wire into that port on my circuit board). Getting the c wire in my home was a matter of taking the bundle of wires already running from AC to thermostat, and connecting one of the wires to the circuit board's c-wire port, and the other to my thermostat. On my last house (where I left my last ecobee), I had to connect one of the wires to a transformer behind the circuit board, but that was also easy. Watching videos online to troubleshoot this process makes it easy to figure out. And of course, with a good brand like this one, the vendor sells accessories to plug this into the wall. Bottom line, you should figure out how you'll power this item before you buy it, but don't get frustrated by that. It's an easily solved problem. This unit comes with an extra sensor, and putting that in the uncomfortable part of the home helped us because it can tell if that room is occupied or irrelevant, letting the system work harder to cool it, but only when there's someone there. The touchscreen interface works well, and there are a few menus buried in there, but mostly you're intended to use the app to set this up, and the touchscreen to adjust basic temp settings. I never actually touch mine because the integration with Alexa is totally seamless. On that point, it's more than just an Alexa enabled device. It's obviously its own Amazon Echo. Like many of these, it doesn't work as an Echo to be a hub for your Fire TV or other Echos, which is disappointing. However, it works very quickly, without the lag some Alexa enabled speakers have. Its speaker is actually acceptable for podcasts and the news, and you can hear it well, but we easily paired it to our soundbar via bluetooth. with that functionality, this thermostat plays spotify, handled all our Elxa inquiries in the living room (to control our smart lights, set alarms, etc), and it just kinda works as a hub for our house. I really wish it could control our Fire TV. As a thermostat itself, I think it's very accurate with smart ideas (such as setting a range of temps, or a high and a low, so your equipment is used less frequently). The humidity, air quality, extra sensor, they really do provide extra functionality over a regular thermostat. However, our previous very cheap smart thermostat had none of that, and honestly that wasn't a big problem. It wasn't quite as accurate, but it also worked with alexa, and I do think most people would not notice the difference between an ultra-high end thermostat like this, and a cheap one in a room with a cheap Amazon echo. Just consider the value proposition for a moment. If you plan to set it up to handle the extra functions, it starts to be worth the extra money. Ecobee averages sensor readouts on occupied rooms, gives you common sense reports on efficiency, and has told me whenever there's weird behavior, helping me know when my equipment isn't working well. This is no small thing, as a frozen evaporator might take me a long time to notice as the AC struggles, and I discover some large puddle somewhere, but with ecobee I'd get an email and an alert on my phone in time to figure out the problem. And the physical appearance is part of the value as well. The construction quality is great, the way the pad removes from the wall, the steel side, it's a very nice looking thing for your living room, and the screen really looks nice, and I imagine this unit will work well and seem relatively modern for many years. So this is a top of the line model, it looks good on the wall, and I think it picks up voice commands and works great for streaming music from Spotify to my soundbar. If you wanted you could definitely use this as part of a very minimalist but modern living room. An impressive piece of technology. ... show more

  • After considerable back and forth, seems to be working
Style: Ecobee Smart Thermostat Sensor
Updated to 4 stars I upgraded my rating to four stars to reflect the last three weeks experience. I did the following. I consulted an AC repairperson. He verified that my heat pump works, but he did not have Ecobee expertise. He suggested that the problem (see below) was in how the O/B wire signal was processed (he was right). I resorted to using texting on Messenger instead of trying to call and wait. I posed my problem to Ecobee support, but I did not wait. I went about my business, and returned to the Messenger one or two days later. I got an answer every time. Clearly their support is busy, but eventually they get to you. The feedback was competent and after some steps we diagnosed the problem. The B wire switching mode between heat and cool had to be changed in the Ecobee settings. This is a somewhat unusual situation due to my heatpump. The change was easy to carry out (software bases) and it fixed the problem. I have not had the Ecobee long enough to provide a true performance evaluation, but the installation could be worked out by allowing sufficient time for the back and forth on Messenger (a texting app). The Ecobee thermostat is slick and the phone app is easy enough to use. I will keep the unit. Original review Short story: Following support instructions (long time to get them) I installed the Ecobee. Diagnostics are OK, but it does not heat. Called support. Spend 2+ hours waiting for an answer and eventually got tired. Moral of the story: support is woefully understaffed and they got it wrong. Unless your system has an ideal fit, you are on your own. I may return it or ask my AC guy how much he wants to fix the mess. Long story: I bought this because I wanted better control of a zone in my house consisting of laundry room and separate studio, which are connected to a working heat pump separately from the rest of the house. I wanted a remote sensor for the studio, which comes standard with this Ecobee. To be clear: my old dumb thermostat could control heating and cooling just fine, but only following the laundry temperature leaving the study as a passive element. To make sure Ecobee would work, I first run the old thermostat wiring through Ecobee online diagnostic tool. It told me to call support. Support was busy, but I could leave a callback request. They called me back after 2.5 hours. The support fellow was nice, looked at my pictures (thermostat and heatpump wiring), assured me compatibility, and emailed me a wiring scheme for the Ecobee thermostat. I followed instructions, checked, and rechecked. The ecobee thermostat seemed to connect fine, gave the right diagnostics, but it did not heat, either it cooled or run the fan without heat (cannot tell because it is ~45F outside). On "auto" the status said "running without heat to save $" or something to that end. I switched from "auto" to 'heat" and set the temperature higher. Still cold air. Status was heating. Called support. Spend 2+ hours waiting...and waiting... until I got tired. ... show more

  • AMAZING
Style: Ecobee Smart Thermostat Sensor
***UPDATE*** If you have animals make sure your sensors are above their height. If not, their movements will activate them and it will think someone is home. I have a much older house/furnace. I ran the compatibility test on another thermostat (oops) then bought this one. Much to my dismay - it was EASY to hook up, but I had no heat. During the worst cold snap of the year AND Christmas, I tried to contact them but they were so busy the call would just disconnect. I tried Facebook Messenger (even though all the reviews said it was pointless). After 24 hours, they messaged me back. I wasn't home to reinstall the thermostat so they could trouble shoot it, so he scheduled a time to call me back. When he called me back, it took about 3 minutes for him to send me a link to a $10 Adapter to completely fix the issue. No Electrician needed!!!! Once this thermostat and smart sensor were set up correctly, my house is SOOOOO much warmer. I love the fact that if I forget to lower the temp when I leave, I can do it from my phone, then create a routine so its done automatically! It tells me the air quality so I know my humidity as well as the purity at all times. The fact that it is now learning my routines (only been a week) is AMAZING!!! If you're looking at buying one of these and the price, or installation is holding you back - GET IT!!! I am terrified of Electrical work. I turned off the breaker, took 4 screws (2 were holding the backplate) and put the wires in the new back plate. Screwed it back to the wall, and turned the breaker back on. Easy Peasy!!! Plus - My usage is already decreasing just by the change in temps when we aren't home. It also only kicks the furnace on when the temp drops below the desired temp in a room that is Occupied!! Great Technology!!! ... show more
