I purchased the Lennox S40 Smart Thermostat to replace my Lennox iComfort (10F81) Thermostat which had encountered a display failure (blank screen). The S40 thermostat is indeed a direct replacement for the iComfort thermostat and used the same four wires that were used on the older model. I was able to install the S40 thermostat easily (in about two hours) using the available Lennox apps. I had one question after the installation was complete and it was readily addressed when I contacted Lennox Customer Support. The S40 has only been in use for two days, but I am hopeful it will continue to operate for the remainder of the time that I use this HVAC system. ... show more

    • Works so poorly that I now use it as an on/off switch.
This brick will let you down in more ways than you can imagine, if you are buying this as a """smart""" thermostat. I had a Nest thermostat before, which is several times cheaper and much, much better. I really miss it. The single reason why I need to keep this thermostat is that it's the only way to use the variable speed functionality of the heat pump, otherwise I would hammer it off the wall and put the Nest back in. The software is drizzled with bugs (for both the app and the actual unit). As ONE example, consider the feature that turns off the unit when you are away ("Smart Away"). You can try to set the radius of the geofence, but it won't save the change if you leave the menu and come back, nor it will allow you to change the value after changing it the first time. If that wasn't enough, the minimum value you can set is 1.24miles, which pretty much covers all of my town, so I literally have to leave town to have this feature be useful. Of course it will also randomly disable the smart away on my phone, causing the system to shut off when my wife goes out of town. Even stuff that is not technically a bug reflects poor design choices. As ONE example, say that you want the system to start heating at a certain time. The thermostat may decide that it needs to start warming up the house earlier to get it closer to the desired temperature by the time you set. While that may seem like a convenient feature, there is no way to disable it. If you pay for electricity based on time of use, this means that it may start blasting during peak hours. And if you buy an additional temperature sensor so that you can set the target temperature depending on the area of the house you are using, well, good luck. It won't let you do that, it just uses it to take an average temperature. But they have their own definition of average: I've seen the average of 67F and 65F be... 67F. Even the temperature readings are off and seem to be very delayed. Poor training of their support staff. I've called three times for three different reasons, and the operators didn't really seem to understand their own software. I ended up explaining to them how it works. Literally. If you read all the way down here you probably guessed that my frustration with this piece of junk is through the roof. The only way I can use this ""Smart"" thermostat is as a switch. I turn it on and off when I need the heat. From a user experience perspective, literally the only advantage over a thermostat from the 80s is that you can control this very expensive switch from your phone. As a switch. ... show more

The original Lennox communicating thermostat I had went out so I upgraded to this model which was a direct swap that used the same 4 wire set up. There have been a lot of complaints about the display being too dark. This is because of the auto brightness setting, this can be disabled and the brightness can go all the way up.     • Better than the S30 but no warranty
I bought and have the Lennox Dealer install 2 of these thermostat to replace 6 years old S30 not working properly. I bought it at Amazon because the Lennox Dealer quoted me 100% more for the same thermostat (installation not included). I like the fact there is no longer a requirement for a hub and the app is much better than the iConfort app I was using. The user interface in the thermostat is hard to use because the touch screen is not very responsive. Other than that it works well, however if it fails the only option is to buy a new one. Although the product description mentions there is a 10 years warranty with registration, Lennox Limited Warranty Terms, in the Exclusions section paragraph 9 specifically mentions that they only will accept a claim if the product was purchased and installed from a Lennox dealer or a licensed HVAC installer, not over the internet, phone or other means. I called Lennox and they confirmed it. Summary: Acceptable replacement for the old S30, very good price but no Lennox warranty. ... show more

    • Easy to Install; Direct replacement for 10f81 "iComfort" thermostat
I bought the S40 as a direct replacement for my failed "iComfort" (10f81) thermostat. The installation instructions were simple and easy to follow. Instructions for how to do dealer/technician installation were included as well. The on-screen interface is a nice upgrade to the older unit. App integration with the phone seems easier as well. The feature I noticed/like is the "Feels Like" where the sensor will adjust temperature based on combination of indoor/outdoor+humitity parameters. Bought from the Hvac company. They told me if I bought this off of Amazon and they installed it the warranty would be void. Amazon's warranty would hardly cover anything so we'd be SOL. Has much of a pain in the butt as this is, just order is from the retailer. Having a 10 year warranty is worth the price and hassle. ... show more
