  • Good value and good performance
This hole digger started up immediately and operated without problems. I used it make about 5 holes. Then unfortunately it drowned during hurricane IAN from storm surge. So it was under 4 feet of water for an hour or more. I would also suggest that very good grade of non ethanol gas be used. I buy the Home Depo/Lowes gas that comes in quart size cans. It is 94 octane with stabilizer already added. ... show more

  • Dead on arrival
Possible that this is a great unit, but I don't know how to give anything other than 1 star as mine arrived faulty and will not start...not usable. In my case the unit will not prime, appears to have an air leak somewhere so the primer bulb cannot do it's job. No fuel...no combustion. Even though it arrived faulty, Amazon seller requires me to pay postage back if I return it. I'm reviewing this on a weekend, I plan on contacting manufacturer on Monday and will update this review if anything meaningful changes. Guessing shipping charges back will be about the same as a repair at a small engine shop, if manufacturer doesn't do their part I'll have a decision to make. Returning is also not an ideal option as I've also purchased two costly bits for the unit from other vendors. On a positive note...unit seems to be built sturdy and weighs less than I anticipated. Update: Ended up getting the unit fixed locally for about $15. Unit works well, has plenty of power, and sturdy build. Unit is fine but will be selling it. Not a manufacturer issue but learned how dangerous these are to use. Snagged a root while digging and elbow has been out of sorts for months. Cheaper to hire the digging or rent larger equipment next time vs. what the medical bills will likely end up being. If I were to buy another one man earth auger I would buy the same unit, but I don't plan on using one again. ... show more

  • Feels weak for starters...
I received this with a 10" auger and set it up eagerly. I'd seen online videos of augers that drilled in seconds... so I get is powered and head out to a spot I needed to bore and 5 minutes later my heart sank. I barely got 2 inch deep. Maybe I wasn't throtling enough being my first time to use, but am I mean to rev it to super hi like with a chain saw? Most chains saws cut when revved up to full. So maybe I was being too delicate. But if not, then the engine is rather weak. I'll try it again tomorrow. This time I'll rev it up real good and it had better work or else the rating remains the same or goes down one. Otherwise the engine is nice, small enough to carry around, but requires a second 'man' to hold it while you start it up. UPDATED REVIEW: Managed to rev the engine to max and that seems to be the point where it gets it's power. So rev it up good. Then avoid clay or black cotton soils. Those can be hard to drill. Managed to get a large hole dug in a few minutes, but the soil is not lifted out, so I have to scoop it. I blame it on the soil. So this is a great tool... but more power needed to handle clay and black cotton. ... show more

  • Finicky about starting
I've been pleasantly surprised with how well this has worked for me to drill some holes for fence posts. However, every time I get it out, I dread the argument about starting. I follow the instructions, but inevitably end up swearing at it, leaving it, and coming back to try again. That usually works, so maybe it's getting flooded or maybe it's just a typical temperamental little engine. I ordered the powerhead, two auger sizes, and the extension. Somewhere in the orders I was shorted the connector bolt. I'm not sure which of the packages it was, but I think it was the powerhead where a bolt was listed but not included. ... show more

  • Great little tool.
The media could not be loaded. This is my opinion after using this tool -- This is an amazing product. I dug 31 holes over a 6 week span. Sadly, 30 of those holes hit rocks which required me to also purchase a jack hammer. This is a great tool if you are only digging in clean dirt, clay or otherwise. You do not want to try or think this will just plow right through rocks or concrete, it won't. When you do work like this, you need a tool that starts and performs. This tool does that. In fact, I left mine running most of the time even if I set it down to clean out the hole with the post hole diggers. Yes, you will still need post hole diggers to clean the holes out. Originally, I purchased the 6" auger and then an 8". It was much easier to just dig with the 8" auger. Most of my holes were between 26 - 30 inches. I would absolutely buy it again. My video is using the 8" auger. ... show more

  • It gets the job done
I needed this auger to place wood and steel fence posts in hard clay and soil in the foothills of Colorado. This is a very nice, compact and powerful little machine. I used 4 inch and 6 inch augers. For steel posts, the 4 inch auger worked much better than just pounding them in. I could get the posts straight and more securely positioned. The engine started just fine, exactly according to the instructions. I found it easy to set it on a sturdy bucket to start it. Once started, one pull gets it restarted after the auger is attached. No problem with power; it just digs and digs unless you hit a big rock. I did a lot of research before buying this product and find myself very satisfied. I would buy it again. ... show more

  • Fantastic
This allowed me to plant 300 trees in two days. The tank lasts quite a while, it isn't too heavy, and it's easy to operate. I did have one issue with the engine starting. When I filled the tank it was a warm day, everything was fine. The next day the temperature dropped by about 40 degrees. I couldn't get the damn thing started; seemed like the engine wasn't getting any gasoline - and it wasn't. Turns out that the gasoline had shrunk with the temperature change and the negative pressure was preventing anything from getting to the engine! Just had to open the cap to equalize the pressure and things were fine. After that, starts every single time with just a few pulls. I love this thing. It saved me an incredible amount of time and effort compared to using a planting bar... Never, ever again! ... show more
