  • Thorough book journal with plenty of entries and extras! Would be an excellent gift for the bookworm in your life.
Format: Hardcover-spiral
After a decade-long hiatus on reading for pleasure, I began regularly reading again in summer 2017. After completing several long novels, I wanted to keep track of how many pages I'd read. Surprisingly, there's NOT an app for that - aside from Good Reads. Since I'm not keen on having a social media presence, joining that community doesn't fall in line with my needs. Others seem to be in the same boat, creating their own spreadsheets and notebooks to track their reading ventures. I wanted something more than data, though...and I'm so very happy to have found this little gem! Here's what you're in for: 1. Your own Table of Contents - to quickly turn to your book notes by title. 2. Two-page entry logs (66 entries), with prompts for: *Title, Author, Publisher, # of Pages, Genre *"How I discovered or acquired this book" *"When & where read" *"Noteworthy experiences while reading this book" *Checkboxes for "Check out author's other books?" "Or related books?" *Ratings on a scale of 1-10 for: Quality of writing, Pace, Plot development, Characters, Enjoyability, Insightfulness, Ease of reading, & Photos/Illustrations *"Recommend this book?" "To whom?" *Notes & Opinions - this is the entire second page (I'm a little wordy, so must write small to fit my summaries in) *Overall star rating (1-5) 3. "Books I'd Like to Read" (2 pages) - especially helpful for trips to the library or bookstore. 4. (related to "Books I'd Like to Read) (60 entries) for potential books, includes prompts for: *Title, Author, Approximate Length, Recommended by, & Genre/subject 5. "Where I Get My Books" (14 entries) for contacts/book-related stores: *Name, Phone, Website, Username, Password, Account number 6. "Books I've Borrowed" (4 pages) - never accidentally keep a book because you can't remember who it belongs to again! 7. "Books I've Lent" (4 pages) - so you can get your books back from those who don't use this book journal ;) 8. "Books I've Given" (1 page) 9. "Books I Want to Give" (1 page) 10. Book Group Info: *Book Group Reading List (1 page) *Notes (1 page) for meeting locations, etc. *Contacts (16 entries) 11. Acclaimed Authors and Books (THIS IS MY FAVORITE!!) - Find great reads & classics in a simple list, and proudly check them off as you read them. *Recent Nobel Laureates in Literature *Recent Pulitzer Prizewinners *"Among the World's Great Books" (list of Fiction, Nonfiction, & Drama best books of all time, plus the best Poetry authors to introduce you to word artistry) 12. "My Reading Life" *Favorite Books *Favorite Authors *Memorable Book and Author Events *Books that Changed My Life *Literary Places I'd Like to Visit *My Childhood Favorites *Books I Liked as a Teen *Books I Liked in College *Favorite Poets and Poems *Books I Was Supposed to Read and Didn't (but still might!) *Favorite Book-related Publications, Shows, Blogs, and Websites *Books Onscreen (your favorite big screen adaptions, what you'd remake/change, books that would make great movies, & casting notes) *Books I'd Like with Me if I Were Stranded on a Desert Island ....plus, subtle dashes of color and inspiring quotes at the beginning of each section. :) This is a well-made, sturdy, spiral-bound book with a hard cover that's safely closed with a elastic strap. Compact and perfectly sized for carrying in a purse or handbag. Will stay open flat for writing or reference, and the pages flip easily. I've already recorded 15 books in this journal, and I love being able to look back and revisit my favorites! If and when I fill it up, I'll definitely purchase again. ... show more

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS JOURNAL!!
Format: Hardcover-spiral
I sort of had my own book journal, which was just a blank page journal wherein I kept track of everything I'd read, along with various details about each. When I ran into this Journal, I loved it so much, I bought it on the spot, and then came home and ordered a second copy from Amazon. You couldn't ask for a more comprehensive journal to record your readings, and all in 4 5/8" X 7 1/2". You even have a nice covered spiral binding that not only allows the journal to lay flat, but also gives you a nice channel for your pen. Here are the various sections in detail: Pages 8 to 143: Book Log (including two pages for a Table of Contents for your book log). Here, you record author, publisher, # pages, genre, how you discovered the book, when & where read, noteworthy experiences while reading, and whether you'd recommend it to others. You also rate, on a scale of ten, quality of writing, pace, plot development, characters, enjoyability, insightfulness, ease of reading, and photos/illustrations. All that was on the left hand page. The right hand page is for notes and opinions. At the very bottom of that page are 5 stars, and you fill in the appropriate number. (I personally rate on a scale of 10 on a blank line on the left hand page). So this, you see, is the bulk of the journal, as it should be. Pages 145 to 167: Books I'd Like to Read (including two pages for a Table of Contents). You can record 3 books on each page, and there is space for the title, author, approximate length, recommended by, and genre/subject. Pages 170 to 173: Where I Get My Books (company/site, phone, web site, user name, password, account number). Pages 174 to 177: Books I've Borrowed Pages 178 to 181: Books I've Lent. Both of these last two sections allow one line per book for title, belongs to/lent to, when borrowed or lent, and when returned, so lots of books can be recorded. Pages 182 to 183: Books I've Given, and Books I Want to Give (as gifts, I suppose) Pages 186 to 187: Book Group Reading List, and Notes (meeting locations and other info) Pages 188 to 191: Contacts (like friends, or an address list) Pages 193 to 199: Acclaimed Authors and Books listed for you, complete with Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and "Among the World's Great Books...", which is a list of classics in fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry, complete with check boxes for if you've read them. Pages 201 to 216: My Reading Life, consisting of a page each for favorite books, favorite authors, memorable book and author events, books that changed my life, literary places I'd like to visit, my childhood favorites, books I liked as a teen, books I liked in college (WHO had time to read in college???), favorite poets and poems, books I was supposed to read and didn't, favorite book-related publications/shows/blogs/web sites, books onscreen, and LAST BUT NOT LEAST--books I'd like with me if I were stranded on a desert island. Is there any other possible thing they could have included in this Mighty Little Journal?? I don't think so!! ... show more

  • It's pretty cool It's pretty cool
Format: Hardcover-spiral
I really love this journal because of how it keeps to the necessities. There was another book journal that I was considering, but this one is the one I chose because it kept to the necessities and it was easily organized. There's a page at the beginning for the owner's name, some pages for a table of contents, and then over 100 pages for the books you record. It's very simple, while still remaining thorough. Each book gets two pages. On the first page you can record the title, author, publisher, genre, number of pages, how you discovered the book, when and where it was read, and noteworthy experiences while reading. Then it has a section on the pages where you can rate quality of writing, pace, plot development, characters, enjoyability, insightfulness, ease of reading, and photos or illustrations if applicable. It also has sections for whether you recommend it and to whom. On the second page is where you can write things like the summary, or about characters or whatever it is that you want to note. At the bottom of that page you can rate the overall book on a five star scale. After that, there are pages for books you's like to read (with its own table of contents), pages for "my books," a book groups section, a recommended acclaimed authors section, and a section with different headings where you can make different book lists. I also like how small it is. I can carry it with me on trips if I plan on finishing books during that time, so it's not like carrying an extra regular-sized book around. It also seems to be pretty sturdy. The cover is a somewhat hard shell, but the material is what you need to worry about if you care about keeping it looking pristine. It's one of those materials that scratches easily and turns from matte to shiny wherever it's scratched. There's also a convenient elastic strap that you can use to keep your place. All in all, it's very user-friendly. ... show more

  • I like it, but it does have a few irritating features
Format: Hardcover-spiral
I bought several review notebooks last year, but this one seems to work the best so far for me. It's small enough to put in a purse or bag, but not to small that you can't write or read what you wrote. I run a book review blog so I add more details on the information page than they give you like if it is in a series, which book is it or when was it released, or even if it is an advanced release, purchased, Kindle Unlimited, etc. There are two pages per book and sometimes I run out of room so I have gotten good at hitting the high points and what I want to get across in my final review. I also add challenges that the book helped me with and if it is heavy romance, the flame rating. I can pack a lot on these pages even if there isn't a specific spot for all the information. The book holds 70 reviews, so I will be using 2-3 of these each year. The next section is Books I'd Like to Read - I don't use this that much, mostly because I read so many books and have a lot on my TBR pile, there just isn't enough room to list them all. So I mostly write ones down I didn't know about as a way to look it up later when I am at a computer. This section holds 60 books you would like to read. Next is My Books, which lists out books bought, borrowed, lent and given. Again just not enough pages and I don't lend out books because I mostly read eBooks. 14 spots for Where I Get My Books then just list pages for the other sections without much detail. Next up is Book Group Info - title list, notes, contact information for people in the book club - this section is completely useless to me. Even if I was in a book club I wouldn't put people's personal information in here. Nope. Acclaimed Authos and Books is a section to press upon you to read classics, award winners and basically the books the author of this notebook thinks you should read. Total waste of paper. Ripping those out. Don't want or need them as if I want to read them I will, I don't need you to cram it down my throat. Last is My Reading Life which offers some value. You can list your favorite books - great for end of year posts. Favorite Authors - again this really only needs to be new favorite authors, because my favorites don't need to be written down. I know them all! Memorable Book and Author Events - I try to go to one a year and I document it in other ways. I could list it, but it would only be one. Books that Changed My Life - not something I want to put in this book. Literary Places I'd Like to Visit. Not tons of them to list and why, because I don't base where I go on vacation for this. My Childhood Favorites only work for one time through this as they don't change from year to year. Same for teen and college years. It goes on with some other lists that I just ignore. So the drawbacks - the fluff at the end of the journal is over done and seems to be kind of preachy on what we should and shouldn't read. I could forgive the book club area, but the contact info is too much. I could forgive listing my favorite books of the year, but from when I am a kid, teen or in college is just overkill. I would rather have 30 more pages for book reviews. The spiral part is a good idea, but you have to work the pages pack and forth to get the book to lay flat. Not something that would deter me, but something that can get irritating. For now this works for me as I have had a lot going on in my life. Having this with me when I can't be online to write it allows me to record my thoughts while they are fresh so I can work on it later. So it does what I need, just wish it had more pages for reviews, which is the primary reason I purchased this journal. ... show more

  • So much more than just a means of keeping track of what you've read
Format: Hardcover-spiral
This journal is so great - not only does it help me to keep track of what I have already read, but it also can keep track of what you want to read, what you've loaned out, and there are lists of books to give you ideas of future books to read. The book consists almost entirely of pages meant to keep track of what you're reading and your thoughts on it. Each book gets 2 pages - the first page is where you fill out the title, author, genre, how many pages it is, rate the book on quality based on several different elements, who you would recommend the book to, how you found it. The second page is almost entirely blank and reserved for whatever you want - your opinions, quotes you liked, impressions while reading, anything. When I go back and look over the entries I've made for other books I can see how much I enjoyed an author, a book, or even an entire series. Moreso though, it really gives me a unique perspective on what my frame of mind was when I read the book. My tastes are constantly evolving so it can be interesting to go back and see what I was reading and why at any given timeframe. As such, my book lover's journal is deeply personal to me and is so much more than just a list of what books I've read. The only thing that would make this book a little better is if it were bigger. As it is it's not a bad size, about the same size as a daily planner. However, if it were bigger it would hold more information and the fonts wouldn't have to be quite so small - for those of us that write large this book presents a bit of a challenge. However, I really do love this journal and would highly recommend it to anyone who is an avid reader. ... show more

  • Keeping a record of what books you have read
Format: Hardcover-spiral
This book journal, the fifth one that I have used over the years if retirement, have allowed me to write down information about the books as I finish reading them. I guess to ‘pass on’ but who knows if the next generation will even ge interested in what we are reading now. Plenty of space for notes and interesting tidbits that you enjoyed- or didn’t enjoy c ... show more

  • Good content, disappointing construction
Format: Hardcover-spiral
I gave this three stars because I love the idea and I like the actual blanks you're supposed to fill in for each book. Highly relevant to me and my work. However, I'm very disappointed in the execution. Everything that's not black on the cover/spine/back is actually a sticker, but it's not meant to come off. This bothers me. Inside there's a coil-type binding that is anything but smooth. At first I thought there were too many pages stuffed into the book for the binding, and that is a contributing factor, but it just...isn't smooth. Opening and closing the book feels unfortunate. I'm a stationary and paper lover and this it's underwhelming in terms of construction. Because of the overstuffed pages, it's sometimes difficult to turn the pages, or they stick in the coil binding. The first page of my book was glued to the inside cover in one spot--a total manufacturing mistake. The cover feels cheap and shows every single fingerprint and mark. If these things don't bother you and you're able to focus on the (very good) content, buy this. But if you're easily irritated by little annoyances as I am, look elsewhere. ... show more

  • This Crazy Reader Has Searched High and Low for the Best Journal!
Format: Hardcover-spiral
I moderate several online book groups and maintain a reading website. I have been extremely picky about my book journal for 2012 - with all of the books I go through, I really wanted something different! I recently ordered this journal from Amazon after seeing it at B&N with a higher price tag. I am extremely pleased with it, and I have to say that it is my favorite book journal I have ever looked at or owned. This will become my annual journal starting in 2012. It is the perfect size for tucking into a purse or bag, but not so small that writing in it is awkward. I used a Moleskine journal this past year and ultimately cast it aside. I became very annoyed with the alphabetical layout (I prefer to go in chronological order) and the really thin pages. I stopped using it during the summer and tossed it in the trash when I went on a cleaning binge this fall. I also didn't like how it had blank spaces. I REALLY prefer lines to write on! I did save my leftover stickers to use in this book! The journal is black with the print "The Book Lover's Journal" on the front in white font. It is about 7 x 4.6 inches and has a covered spiral ring binding. I was able to tuck a pen inside and have it close perfectly. The first pages include: Contact Information Introductory Pages Table of Contents for you to fill in with book titles The primary journal pages (room for about 140 books) include space for recording on the left page in book: Title Author Publisher Number of Pages Fiction (check box) Genre: Non-Fiction (check box) Subject: How I Discovered or Acquired This Book When and Where Read Noteworthy Experiences While Reading This Book Check Out Author's Other Books (check box) Or Related Books? (check box) Rate on a Scale of 1-10 (with numbers so you can circle) Quality of Writing Pace Plot Development Characters Enjoyability Insightfulness Ease of Reading Photos/Illustrations Recommend This Book? (check box) To Whom? To me, the only thing really missing is a date read area. There is a strip of cream-colored blocking that runs across the top of these two pages where you fill in the title on the left side. I plan on filling in the date read in this block on the right side.
