  • Holds up to a top Miele canister vacuum! And then...
Style: Gen5detect
I am comparing this to the best canister vacuum ever made, a top Miele $1k+ canister vacuum. I am not yet considering getting rid of the Miele, but as I compare the two, here are my impressions: 1. Cleaning power: Both excel. For sustained long power over a larger surface, the Miele is in its element. But it's also heavy and cumbersome to move around, which will make you take shortcuts and avoid going into tighter places. The Gen5 on autodetect (where it automatically adjusts suction power to the surface) also gets there. I should not that the first time I used the Gen5, I had previosuly used the Miele. On the open surfaces the Miele had cleaned, the Gen5 barely found anything, but then when you got to the corners of stuff, whoa, the Gen5 showed its superiority in reaching anywhere, easily. 2. Weight: I used to vacuum holding the Miele vacuum in one hand, and vacuuming with the other. I am large and strong, so it wasn't hard for me, but it wasn't enjoyable either. The Gen5 "gamifies" cleaning, it's light and super maneuverable, so invites you to get to tight spaces. Love the Gen5. 3. Sturdiness, Build Quality: The Miele is cast in metal. But heavy. The Gen5 feels a bit plasticky, honestly, and at times I felt I may break something, because some of the pieces are initially hard to clip in and out. But you gain trust in the Gen5 quickly. It is well made. 4. Attachments and Versatility: They both have good attachments to work around the house. But the Miele will stay on the house. The Gen5 can be used in your car (and it is awesome at it) because it is very portable, and brings all the power to any environment. 5. Bare floors and the "fluffy optic" cleaner head: Oh wow. Game changing stuff. The Gen5 murders the Miele there. The ability to see the huge difference you are making as you vacuum and clean is absolutely amazing. 5. Additional thoughts: The only drawback of the Gen5 is the direct consequence of its portability and lightness - the fact it is battery powered and hence has limited time. But in my experience -based on having to vacuum 1000 sqft these days- you may kill the battery within 15mins (that's how long it lasts at full suction power) on your first vacuum, because the Gen5 will pick up stuff none of your prior vacuums did... but after those early cleaning jobs (which will fill the container quickly), things normalize and a battery charge will easily last for larger than 1k sqft environments, no doubt. In a nutshell, while the top end Miele and the Dyson are probably pretty close in suction power (and the Miele is possibly a bit better), the practicality and versatility of the Dyson Gen5 makes it a winner, at least to me. I like them both, but if I had to keep only one, it would be the Dyson Gen5. ... show more

  • Waited many years to buy a Dyson - worth the wait
Style: Gen5detect
I have considered purchasing a Dyson ever since they came on the market. The price (yikes!) and the mixed reviews from owners and Consumer Reports always stopped me in the past. I have had corded - upright- higher end Sharks, passed along to the kids when they got replaced. For about this past year the most recent Shark became much harder to push and I could visibly see it wasn't picking up very well and who knows how was not being seen? This time I decided I wanted a cordless model now that these newest models rivaled the power of an upright. I started reading the Dyson reviews again and decided to pull the trigger on this Gen5Detect. The features most important to me were: 1) Battery run time; 2) Suction power; 3)power button stays on...and of course the recent reviews. When it arrived I ran my shark over a carpet section then went over the same area with the Dyson. OH MY. How much it picked up and what it picked up was impressive and disgusting all at once. As I vacuumed the rest of the first floor and emptied the bin numerous times and saw the breakdown of debris I thought "maybe there are things I didn't really want to know"! My first grand baby (they live next door) will be crawling soon and thinking what she would be crawling around on...ugh! My daughter-in-law wants one too, so she came over to witness the first running. We were both surprised at how small the bin is (.2 gallons) and emptying it is a multi step process. I think that as I get used to it this will become quicker. Hoping that it won't require emptying as often once the carpets and hardwoods are cleaner. I do not vacuum the whole house (3000 sq ft) at any one time - the charge lasts long enough to do 3-4 rooms at a time. Fine for me, but maybe not for others. I have noticed that at 100% power it has a real time run time of 20-30 minutes. HOPE this is because it is still working harder to get accumulated dirt up, and the actual run time will improve as floors are cleaner. I am watching this while I still have a return window. I decided that the additional cost for the Outsize version's 1/2 gallon bin was not worth the cost...this purchase was the most expensive vacuum I've ever bought. I also especially like the stair attachment - it really is so much easier to use on the 2 flights of stairs than my previous ones. So - in conclusion - overall very pleased with the performance of both the carpet and the hardwood floor attachments and the light on the hardwood is very helpful (and revealing). It's heavy enough to do an admirable cleaning job, but not so heavy that my arm is suffering. Love that I can maneuver in, around and under places hard to reach with an upright. Fingers crossed this purchase doesn't disappoint in the long run! ... show more

  • MY BFF
Style: Gen5detect
OMG!!!!! I do not know why I have not invested in a Dyson sooner. I am so thrilled to own such a cool gadget that not only sucks up all my life problems but has created a cleaning addiction in me. I have all hardwood floors and a accent rug in our living room and all I do is sweep, I mean the amount of dust and crumbs on my floor with 2 boys under 5 is ridiculous. I have been eyeing a cordless vacuum for a few years and finally made the jump. I will say, it is a little heavier than I expected but I just flip the vacuum to my other hand when I start getting tired. The edge to edge suction is amazing and really does make a difference on my floor borders. This vacuum quality is exceptional and I love the LED light, I mean I am always vacuuming now, but its almost just for fun. My cleaning time has been diminished and it is so much quieter than my old hoover. I wish that the stronger suction option did not use so much battery but I love the display and keeping track of how much time I have left. I would definitely invest in this over and over again and if you're thinking about it, let this be your sign!!!! BEST SPRING CLEANING ADDITION!!! ... show more
