  • Excellent update!
So... I have this box and I have the Dune HD Premier 4k Pro. Same guts in both boxes but the 4k Pro comes in an aluminum case and can handle a hot swap 2.5" HDD. If the internal HDD is not needed this Homatics box is a good (great) option. If you are looking at this box you know enough that I don't need to go into the same details as everyone else has BUT now... Dune upgraded the box to Android 12 and as they always do they have released an updated version of their Dune Media software as well. Android 12 allows the box to Passthrough DTS HD MA now! IMO it annihilates the Nvidia Shield it just replaced. I have it hooked to an 85" TCL QM8 and the picture and sound are so good I just want to stay home and watch movies I used to think were mediocre because they look so good. The 4k upscaling is about on par with the Nvidia Shield AI upscaling set to medium to my eyes if you've seen that, which is really good without being too sharp. The box will allow you to play literally everything in HDR if you choose to set it that way or will play native SDR as SDR and HDR as HDR. If you set the box to play everything as HDR on my TV I see that its converted to not just HDR but Dolby Vision and looks remarkable (be advised, Samsung doesn't support DV but it does support HDR10+ which IMHO looks better than DV anyway because it doesn't crush blacks as much, and this box gives you that option). Color pops and the playback is smooth on both streaming and movie files, it all looks good and sounds good also. The Dune Media software is user friendly and I enjoy the way they have it categorized, it looks really clean and organized, something everyone likes to see. Also upgraded is the box's ability to play fractional framerates, which cleans up the smoothness of fast moving scenes. It's been able to play every video and sound codec I've thrown at it so far, and has done it properly without a hiccup or stutter, like flawless actually. This upgrade to Android 12 has been significant to say the least. For the price this Homatics Dune box is really a sweet spot for both streaming and files. IMO it allows your tv to look as good as the TVs capabilities as it also handles both 8 bit and 10 bit color. Personally I'm sold on Dune now and I guess I'm going to be a Dune "fan" if this is what they do lol. If Nvidia ever releases a new box I'll try that also though, investing in technology is the only way to continue getting better tech. You really can't go wrong with this box with this new update and it says something for the company to release these updates instead of trying to sell you more equipment, they are certainly dedicated to their reputation. This is a cinemaphiles box that does streaming really well. Yes, Dune makes better boxes for file playback but I want one that streams 4k services without any issues so choices are limited. With all this being said, obviously I would recommend this box to my personal friends without hesitation because the return on investment is high here and the picture quality is glorious. ... show more

  • Fabulous. Exceeded all expectations.Unbelievably price for what it does.
Finally a tv box that is a true premium services 4k streaming box, and a high end media player. I was using a zidoo z9x with a 16tb hdd to play my movie collection in my home theater, but I had to add an nvidia shield for streaming netflix, etc., in 4k, hdr. Dolby vision and atmos. I have been able to sell the zidoo and shield with this one box and an external enclosure for my 16tb movie collection hdd. It does everything as advertised. No youtube reviews on the dune hd version of the homatics box, but the chigz tech review of the homatics box applies. This is actually the homatics box that is licensed for the Dune Media Center. I could not download the app from the play store as dune is still tinkering with it, but you go to the dune website and they have the app there. Excellent help center as to how to set it up and use it. Full featured to say the least. It plays all formats you can throw at it including av1 which the shield does not have. Perfect for home theater at a bargain price. I am truly ecstatic with this box. You can easily side load apps not in the playstore. Some of these will not show in the menu, but you can install sideload launcher from the play store and using this. See and launch hidden apps like Chrome and adblock browser. Finally, when I connected my movie hdd to the box via the USB 3.0 port, opened the dune media center, and scanned/indexed the movies on the hdd, I had 99% matches on the movie and tv shows. It only took 10 minutes to match the few movies it had issues with. With the zidoo, I had to spend hours fixing .Oviedo matching errors in their home theater app. I cannot recommend this box highly enough. ... show more

  • massive upgrade for playing external media files
I bought this because Roku Ultra's external media player was, for all practical purposes, a broken app. The Dune media player is more or less a perfect answer to that. All of the improvements I wanted, I got: 1)Plays all of the major movie extension files. 2)Plays all the audio codecs the Roku won't, specifically aac and atmos. I've heard that it won't play DTS HD, but I can't comment on that. And yes, it also plays ac3, eac3 and every other type of DTS. 3) Yes, it plays subtitles, but here's the bonus: it plays FORCED subtitles. 4) It's not massively buggy! The number of errors the Roku Ultra plays when attempting to use the media player is legion. Unplugging and plugging back in the roku, as well as unplugging and plugging back in the thumb drive, was a daily affair. Now, every few days the Dune media player does seize up, and yes, it does require unplugging and plugging back in the box. But this is so rare when compared to the Roku that it barely requires mentioning. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed in a firmware update. 5) Okay, I wasn't looking for this, but I'm glad it exists: the Dune remote is set up to actively control the power on/off for your avr and tv (assuming they're connected by hdmi), and it can control the avr volume. This means that for all intents and purposes, your dune is the only remote you need for regular, daily use. The only reason I go to my tv and avr remotes anymore is to tweak some settings, but that's about it. The slightly meh: yes, you do have to download the Dune Media Player app. But the instructions for doing this can be found on the Dune site and they're easy to follow, so at worst this was really just a one time nuisance that takes about 15-20 minutes to do. If you're not technically inclined then I guess it could take you up to an hour to figure out. Would like to see in future software updates: the ability to reprogram one of the colored buttons to turn on and off subtitles with a single click using the Button Mapper app from the Google Play store. Also, there's one nice feature the Roku had, which was the option to rewind and temporarily play subtitles. If the Dune dev team is reading this then I can say that your customers will appreciate you for adding this feature. ... show more
