  • It really works
It worked on my 2014 KIA Soul and my 2012 Chev Impala The code was easy to find on both cars and easy to fix and clear, One was low on oil and the other an old battery code stored.

  • Having an OBD reader is cheap information and insurance. This one is a solid choice.
The DriveDoctor Car OBD2 Scanner, Fault Code Reader and Vehicle Status is a great tool for people who don’t trust their mechanic. Just plug it into the OBD port (probably right below your steering wheel) and it will use the car’s power to read the computer and present you with error codes you can use to diagnose any issues. It’s inexpensive compared to other similar readers and, unlike my old reader it replaces (my friend “borrowed” it and I’ve given up waiting for him to return it) it doesn’t have a ridiculously thick cable that’s difficult to bend into the constrained space beneath my dashboard and takes a ton of storage space. One caveat: though it’s advertised as “for All OBD II Protocol Cars Since 1996” that’s only partly true. BMW and MiniCooper use some strange proprietary standard and most OBD readers (this one included) can’t read it. There may be other brands where it won’t work but I’m unaware of them. It helps in two ways: 1. You can see what’s wrong and, if you’ve got some automotive skills you may be able to replace or repair it yourself, and 2. You can see what’s wrong and compare that to what your mechanic says is wrong with the car. In either case, having an OBD reader is cheap information and insurance. This one is a solid choice. ... show more

  • Readout items don't translate well to non-mechanics. User Manual poorly translated.
"5. Do not use this product in the room." What? I don't get it or can even figure out what the warning is referring to. After reading through the manual, understood that it would power up when I got it plugged into the vehicle and the vehicle on or running. Then I had 13 pages of mechanic shorthand codes to try to find what I was looking for (engine operating temp which I think was ERT). I have no idea what 90% of the coding referred to and don't know where to find the code key. On the plus side, the display is nice and bright and the flat wire cord is certainly better than the round wire I've seen on most similar units. Once I figure out how to translate the available information I think this will be super handy. ... show more

  • Decent, if generic code reader.
Pros - Easy to use long cable powered by the OBDII port Color display Live data Cons Limited capability No way to transfer live data Cannot scan Chrysler CCD Bus so no ABS / Airbag / Transmission data on CCD Bus equipped vehicles (Which are admittedly older. 96-02 Ram for a start) Menu system a little clunky due to very limited number of buttons. Is it worth the price? Yes, but there are also other solutions out there. ... show more

  • Plug and Play
Easy to use, truly plug and play. Makes diagnosing and car CEL / issues easy. Really love the battery voltage test, which my older OBD2 reader doesn't have. It helped me identify a battery issue, allowing me to swap out a dieing battery for a new one. Much better than my older unit that only gave codes and was only a B&W LCD screen. Compared to my older OBD2 reader, this unit has a longer cord (so I no longer have to contort myself to plug it in and use), a color screen that's easy to read (great for my aging eyes) and provides the code and description. ... show more
