Top Amazon Reviews

  • awesome at half the price
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
We love purchasing on Amazon, because the reviews let us know what will meet our needs and work for us. Here is another case in point. We have looked at locally available mobility scooters, and there are many places to purchase scooters here where we live in South Florida. However, this Drive Medical scooter is half the price of the other major brand, and Drive Medical makes high quality, well-made scooters. The Amazon reviews convinced us to go ahead and buy it. My husband wanted a scooter so he could ride down to the shopping mall, which is about half a mile from our home, and the public library is about a mile away. There are sidewalks the whole way. At the highest speed, he is content. The steering is supposed to be less tight on a 4-wheel scooter versus a 3-wheel, but we wouldn't need more. The seat is very comfortable, and my husband is heavier. The weight limit is 300 lbs. The basket is larger than other scooters that we looked at. The leg room is ample, even though it looks small, it's really great. We kept the red accents, but it comes with a package of blue accents if you prefer that color. We left the garage door open, and the delivery truck put the scooter into the center of the garage. Assembly was easy. The directions and Owner's Manual are very well written and easy to understand. You can download the manual to save it electronically (click on the link "Warranty" above the description on Amazon, and you will get the latest Owner's Manual version.) So I went to Drive Medical online and tried to register the scooter for the warranty. The problem was that there are several numbers on the stickers on the scooter, and I couldn't tell which number was the actual serial number. Clue: the serial number is 12 digits long, it starts with a number, and the second digit is a letter. So, I called Customer Service. The people were very polite and answered right away. They said that I didn't need to worry; that Amazon automatically registered the Drive Medical scooter for us at the time of purchase. I asked them to explain the warranty, and they did. The scooter came partially charged, so my husband was able to take a short drive right away. OK, so then we charged it overnight, and my husband took it for a ride. It's supposed to go at least 9 miles, but it ran out of battery charge at .4 mile (I measured the distance with the car). We tried charging it for another 24 hours, and the same thing happened - it ran out of battery charge at under 1/2 mile. So I called Customer Service, explained what was happening, what the display lights looked like, etc., and they said they would take care of it. Two days later we received a new charging cord. I called Customer Service, and said, I thought we were supposed to be getting a new battery, and they said, just try it. We charged the scooter overnight with the new charger, and it works fine. I highly recommend this mobility scooter. It is easy to take apart and put in the back of our car, I can do it by myself, and I’m 65. It is silent when running. It is very comfortable. Really great. You can't beat this price. The Customer Service is wonderful and responsive. ... show more

  • STARTING MY 4TH YEAR-Still going strong!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I got this scooter 3 years and 10 days ago. It’s been in the trunk of whatever car I’m driving since. I’ve had the Lincoln MKZ for two years this week and would not leave the city limits without it. It’s better than a lifeboat and a lot easier to love: there is very little maintenance. About a month ago I got crunched in the MKZ, took out the whole right front quarter. I drove to the collision repair shop and parked the car, opened the trunk and got my scooter out, told the shop boss to call me when the car was ready and headed home. The trail was only about 5 miles and rough in places, but the traffic was okay and the trip seemed short. I wouldn’t trade my scooter for any other. The rest of my review that follows was written about two years ago and still stands today. Easy assembly and can be easily disassembled to take it anywhere. I hauled it in a Town Car for about a year, recently changed to a MKZ. There’s more room in the MKZ. We took it to Oregon last year, rode it over paved trails. The battery lasted as long as I needed it. I am very happy with it and not buying the three wheel version makes me even more happy with it, as there were times I believe the three wheel version would have dumped me. I especially like the double speed controls, as i’m able to smoothly travel very slow or turn the limiting knob and move along faster than my wife can walk if I dare. Especially great for shopping or visiting the VA. Both places have scooters for customers but more customers than scooters. I’m 83, and yes it’s a little heavy, but I have no trouble loading/unloading it. I’m able to walk only very short distances before the pain sets in, so I appreciate the mobility without having to haul it on a trailer. ... show more

  • Well worth it!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
My husband and I had a cruise coming up and because of his balance issues (Parkinson's) we decided to see how much they cost and spent hours reviewing a variety of brands and models. We knew we wouldn't use it often, so went with a lower cost scooter in hopes it would meet our needs. It did - and more. We got the 4 wheels instead of the 3 because of the more stable turning - but paid a price in the size of the turning radius. Regardless it was wonderful on the cruise ship. It is small enough to fit through the cabin door and was easy to "drive" throughout the ship, into the dining rooms, and even could stay seated by pulling up and swiveling the seat to sit comfortably at the table for playing cards, talking, or even eating. The battery held as advertised, and it was easy to disassemble and reassemble as we could do it ourselves. Moving on and off the ship's gangways was also easy. In fact, because of the ease and the ability to strap a few small bags on the back of the seat, place a small carryon between my husband's legs, and a few necessities (boarding and disembarking documents) in the basket up front for easy access we decided I could roll off our medium size suitcase and we used the carry off disembarkation and were one of the first off the ship and in our car and on the way home before most guests were called to disembark. We were concerned there'd be a lack of legroom using the smaller 4-wheel model. However, my husband had no issue, and our son who just had major reconstructive knee surgery is able to use it with enough space at the "fender' over the wheel to prop his foot as his leg is in a brace that doesn't allow mobility at all. He has found it a lifesaver alternative to the crutches when going more than a short distance or leaving the house to go into the yard or away from his home to ours, doctor, etc. The battery remained fully charged over 4 weeks while not in use, and going a great distance prior to needing a recharge. We are glad we went with this scooter. ... show more

  • Excellent Product/Worthless Owner's Manual
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I am a very meticulous and orderly type of person. Before buying I thoroughly read ALL THE REVIEWS twice on Amazon. Then I felt I was ready to properly handle this product. Once I received it the assembly was easy but it took me 2 full days before I could get this thing to move at all. DON'T GET ME WRONG THIS SCOOTER IS PERFECT and I would give it 5 stars. However the owner's manual is worthless and is principally of no help on two important things: 1) Front wheels won't turn more than an inch or so ! It took me one day to solve this thanks to a third reading of all the amazon's reviews ! The manual is mute on this subject ! There is a front wheel lock at the bottom of the tiller and I tried to turn it right and left or push it in vain. Finally I pulled it and the wheels unlocked. Neither the knob nor the manual say that you have to PULL it in order to unlock the front wheels. 2) I was still unable to start the scooter on the 2nd day and had to go to a local Drive Medical supplier for help. There is a lever in the back of the scooter to lock or unlock the rear wheels. In order to have the scooter to move I always made sure the wheels were unlocked. That's logical you would not drive your car with the parking brake on, right ? WRONG! THIS SCOOTER WILL ONLY MOVE WITH THE REAR WHEELS LOCKED ON ! I don't consider myself stupid and I really felt frustrated! You would think that the maker of this product go out of its way to make the experience as unpleasant as possible. ... show more

  • Well made, great deal! Hello, World!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I purchased this as a bid for freedom outside the home. I wanted something dependable, motorized, and transportable. I did a lot of research, and found this appeared to fit my needs best for the price. Amazon had the best price I could find at $624 (with shipping cost figured in), and I received the interchangeable blue parts included with the deluxe version to boot! I am very glad I got this! I am able to use this to get out and work in the garden, visit a friend, or go to the local businesses. It is an indescribable joy to be able to leave the house and get around town. The farthest trip I have taken totaled about three miles (with many inclines and declines), and the scooter was definitely slowing down by the end. In a flat land without ramps, little hills, or grass it would probably last longer without slowing down. As with my motorized wheelchair (also made by Pride), I have to be careful about inclement weather and get stuck easily. I do fine on my flat lawn, though can get high-centered on the thick grass at the park. From my own experience, as with other mobility equipment, just be careful and don't go somewhere that looks like you might get stuck unless you have someone to pull you out. And mount an umbrella onto your scooter, or at least bring one with just in case it rains. A little rain has not caused any issues for me yet, I tend to forget my umbrella if it is not attached. I have read reviews across the web about improvements for one's needs that can be made to this particular scooter, including larger wheels for rougher terrain and larger batteries for longer trips. Some can be purchased on Amazon, such as cup holders and mounts for various devices. I myself have a safety flag mounted on the back for better visibility, and envision more custom-ability of this spiffy set of wheels. Happy adventuring to all you beautiful riders! ... show more

  • So far so good, Amazon did their part
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
We got the item in five days from Amazon Prime and it was delivered at the day they said (2:30 PM Friday). So far so good, Amazon did their part. Unpacking a heavy box was easy with little mess Styrofoam pieces with magnetic properties. The unit looks great was packed well went together without a problem. Connected the charging cord to the battery on the machine: got a red charging indication on the charger. All steps are as the company says. Got a green light on the charger indicating a full charge only five hours into the 8-12 hours told about in the owners manual. Turned on the key and no charge was indicated on the control panel. I then connected the battery to another outlet detached from the scooter, and allowed it to charge over night. The total charge time was by now 17 hours, 12 of those with a green light on the charger. I put the battery back in the scooter and still no electrical indication of any kind on the control panel i.e. horn or battery indicator. I took the battery off the machine and tested it with a electrical multitester, the battery is completely dead. I called technical support "Technical Support/Peace of Mind (866) 621 4933 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (EST). I waited on hold for thirty minutes as the recorded message said someone would be right with me. Finally in desperation I called Customer Service (866) 694-5085 8:30 am - 8:00 pm and got "no messages may be taken for this mail box.. Good by. and a hang up. As I say the machine looks well made, assembled easily, there web site needs updating as it should show they don't work weekends. My opinion because that is what this forum is about is: The product looks well made, the customer support is poor. We got this machine for my wife, and an upcoming trip to Disneyland and other SoCal POIs. I hope the company will ship a new charged battery on Monday as the timing is critical for the trip. If we are successful by getting to use the scooter In Disneyland I will post a "how long the batteries last" comment to this post. Update 11/20/15 After talking to tech support and customer care (both of which were very polite and helpful and concerned) I received a new battery in three days (shipped from NY to NV) excellent customer support. I am changing my "stars from 3 to 5. As I feel if the machine quit working in Disneyland they would probably get me "road service". Their website just needs to be updated to say they only work weekdays. If you are looking to purchase this unit, Here are some comments I could not find in the description. There is a "receiver" under the seat facing to the rear 4" long with a screw knob tightener that will accept a 1"x1" accessory post i.e. basket, or trailer. I gambled and got a basket a basket that fits. ... show more

  • Lasted 4 months before contacts failed. Plus battery problems. Lasted 4 months before contacts failed. Plus battery problems.
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
CONTACT PROBLEM: Most scooters have electrical plugs hanging on wires between battery and motor. The wires absorb any movement so the metal connection in the plug stays solid. But this scooter uses solidly mounted contacts on the battery side, which press against mounted metal plates on the removeable motor side to send power across, instead of plugs on wires. So as you ride over even small bumps the torsion between the two sections of the scooter causes the contacts to move slightly across the plates while conducting power. This causes tiny sparks between the two metal parts which eats away the metal. After only 4 months, enough metal was sparked away that electrical contact was lost and the scooter stopped. BATTERY PROBLEM: After three months with the scooter, 3 miles a day on level ground, charging it each night. The battery started going empty after a single 2.5-mile round trip, the problem getting worse each trip. I opened the battery pack and was surprised to see it says "Lead Acid", not even a "Deep Cycle" lead acid. Regular lead-acid batteries are damaged each time you use them more than 50% of their rated value before charging them again, while the "deep cycle" type of lead acid can be drained much further without damage. In my case, I replaced the two 12v batteries with one 24v lithium-ion electric-bike battery. Wrapped in a towel, it fits snuggly in one side of the scooter's battery case. It costs a bit more than Lead Acid, but I'd have been happy to pay a little more for the scooter and have a battery expected to last 5 years. The advantages of lithium-ion over lead-acid are (1) You can use ALL the power in the battery, repeatedly, without any damage. (2) The voltage stays up at 24v until the battery is nearly empty, instead of running down slowly like lead-acid batteries do. (3) It is small and lightweight. The company should invested in long-lasting batteries for the happiness of all their scooter owners. I see the the pair of lead acid batteries on Amazon for $50, and the li-ion battery I bought for $150. It's well worth the $100.00 difference! ... show more

  • Exactly What My Wife Needed!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
My wife has Parkinson's and shopping has become too much for her with her walker. She resisted the "Power Shopping Carts". Finally figured out that a product like this is what she needs. Since getting this scooter, she get's out at least once a week to go grocery shopping, Walmart, etc. We park in a handicap spot, I assemble the scooter, help her get on and we are off. It has easy to use controls, nice battery guage (5 miles oer charge) and is thoughtfully designed to make getting on and off as easy as is possible. Sturdy flip up armrests and a swivel seat that locks into multiple positions are nice touches. My only small complaint is that the turning radius of this four wheeled version is really wide. Takes some practice but works fine in a store, not sure about inside a home. We only use if for shopping. We chose the stability of having four wheels vs the three wheeled version. This is solidly built, very stable and just "feels" safe to go on a spin. It seems durable and really is simple to use. The speed control knob limts speed but when turned up to max, will get you someplace in a hurry. After you do it a few times, the assembly and disassembly is quick and pretty painless. Really glad that we purchased this scooter. It's been nearly life changing for my wife . . . ... show more
