    • Surprisingly Good Metal Detector!
First of all, I am beginning detectorist. I did a lot of research. After reading a bunch of reviews and watching a lot of online videos about a bunch of different devices I decided to give this machine a shot. I am not at all disappointed. I am a big "bang for your buck" kind of guy. This thing has the most high end features and best reviews that I could find in this price range. If you want a good starter detector and don't want to spend a ton of money, this is your machine. Relax and buy it. You'll be happy with it. For a more detailed review, keep reading. I received my MT-XR a few weeks ago. It was super easy to assemble and seems well made. It is really lightweight and easy to swing for extended periods of time without your arm getting too tired. The aluminum (?) tubing seems strong and the cam locks are sturdy. I put mine together in about 5 minutes. My only qualm is that the 9v battery connector is the old 80's "lanyard" type and not a drop-in style, but even that connetor seems sturdier than normal. My first test was in my backyard. I turned it on and almost immediately it found an old nail about 4-5 inches down. After finding 2 or 3 more nails I figured it worked well enough to take with me on vacation to the beach. Out on the beach, I first tried it down on the wet sand with everything wide open (sensitivity up all the way, looking for all metal types). It went a little bonkers. I used the discrimination feature to get rid of ferrous metals and that helped a lot, but I still got a lot of false positives, so I turned down the sensitivity. That helped a little, too. I decided to give the dry sand a try because I had heard that wet sand can cause some interference with detectors. The dry sand really made a difference! I still discriminated out the ferrous metals, set the sensitivity down a notch from the top and after that I was finding all sorts of coins, can tabs, matchbox cars, etc. While I didn't find any gold rings or diamond necklaces, I think I might have if I had stuck with it long enough. Overall, it was a great first experience. Tips: Play around with the settings until your false positives are at a minimum. Try to not brush the sand with the sensor ring - it makes it sound off all kinds of crazy stuff. Hold he ring down to the ground before turning the unit on - it helps with the automatic ground balancing and minimizes false positives. If you get a signal, go over the same patch of ground several times before digging - this will verify something is there and save you from unneeded digging. Get a pack of rechargeable 9v batteries with a charger - they are about 20 bucks for 4 batteries and will pay for themselves many times over. Get the Dr. Otek Pin Pointer - That little thing works great, plus, DR Otek sends you a 15% off coupon that you can use towards it. Pros: Inexpensive Well Built Lightweight Works Well Lots of High-end Features Battery life is pretty long (at least 3-4 hours) Cons: The arm strap is a little too small The 9v connector is a little flimsy The learning curve is a little steep, but once you get used to it, it works great Not too great on wet sand (so far - maybe I need to figure out better settings) Summary: I think I made a great choice. Style: Metal Detector Kit Red
Heres just some of what I think it does well. Full disclosure Im just a regular dude who has only owned one other cheapo before this. Its super easy to put together, super easy to read, super easy to operate, runs off 1 battery. I replaced the original battery after a solid 10 to 12 hours swinging. Second is staying strong. The battery indicator tells me so. A nice feature. The pin pointer is spectacular to those like me who have never had that option before. And because the price is so reasonable I was able to save up for a Garrot Carrot a week later and the two of them working together is true harmony. Its much lighter then my old prospector and adjusted to fit my arm and swing very well. Im average 5 10 ish. Having the back light for the screen actually got me to finish a session at dusk when I wasnt leaving until I found that darn dime. I knew it was a dime because thats what it told me it would be. The numbering and chart on screen is tremendous again for those who never had it before. What continues to blow my mind is when it picks up coins in a hole shared by a nail or two. Thats impressive to me. Discriminating options for targets, the memory setting works. Lots of good if not great with this machine and tops for the price. The bad is petty in my opinion but the headphones are garbage and only the left ear works. But having a headphone option alone outweighs that complaint. NAILS. It loves them even when the iron is muted. Some larger nails and iron are registering as coin if they are close to the surface. I can see that being an issue if Im scouring the beaches but since Im concentrating on woods and colonial relics, I dig everything. Its loud even with the three volume settings at its lowest. I use the headphones so again for me its a non issue. Having 3 volume options is still pretty sweet. Back lighting will drain power fast and I havent tried the coil submerged yet but for the price I couldnt find anything on the market that compared and after hours of research put in I am glad that the Dr. is my next step up in the world of detecting. My buddy was pretty impressed with mine and ordered one for himself. Its his first and I cant wait for the first day when we bet $5 on who finds the coolest relic! If this is your first detector or you want something more detailed then a four bar 4 sound alert, this detector wont let you down. Quite the opposite for me. I love more each hunt. ... show more
