Surprisingly powerful for a battery operated device. Will easily cut through 1/2” branches. Bought mainly to trim arborvitae to about 8 feet. Works great for this purpose. Have 3 hedges and was quickly able to trim. The device is somewhat heavy which is understandable considering the power it produces. I just take breaks in between cuttings. Comes with a 4 ah XR Dewalt battery and charger. Will last for about 1 hour of continuous cutting. Battery has guage showing remaining power level which is a nice feature. You can buy a lighter brand but I don’t know if it would compare to the power of the Dewalt. This is strictly a pole hedger. Would be nice if it converted to a hand model but it doesn’t. Would also be nice if an extension pole was available to extend to higher heights but I can’t find one. The pole with hedger at a 90 degree angle stands 4 feet in height. Add 32” to length with hedger at 180 degrees. Will comfortably reach the top of a 9-10’ hedge. Anything higher is a reach.

I had tree trimming that would have cost me thousands of dollars to have done by a professional. I discovered this tool, however, and was able to do the whole thing by myself. It may be a little heavy for some, primarily working on high branches, but it's not unmanageable. I would give this a 5-star review, but my only critique is that there should be a further extension on the pole. Standing flat on the ground, I can reach up to 12 feet with the tool. That's a good extension, but a few more feet would be ideal. Otherwise, this is an excellent product for anyone who likes to do it themselves.

I purchased this Dewalt hedge trimmer for home usage--mainly for a hedge that is 25 feet long and seven feet high. The hedge is up against a high wood fence so I was looking for a trimmer with a long reach. I used the trimmer while on foot and while on a ladder. I mainly used the trimmer in the straight orientation, but also used it articulated in an L-shape for a short period. None of the branches were thicker than 3/8". It came with a 4.0 amp/hour battery, but it wasn't charged and I used a charged 3.0 amp/hour battery that came with another Dewalt tool. The trimmer cut the hedge as fast as I could move it. The motor and the blades were completely adequate for the job. I was able to top the hedge from one side of the hedge. When the battery is fully charged three LED lights are displayed. The battery still showed three light bars after I finished the job! The interlock switch is fussy to manipulate and slightly delays the cutting process. I am long in tooth. A younger person would find the weight (and torque arm) trivial. The weight would have bothered me if I had to run the trimmer for a full day. When I am buying a new item I often refuse to make a selection until I can download the operator's manual (as a pdf) and convince myself I like the specs, mode of operation, etc. I was unable to download an operator's manual for this tool or some Dewalt drills I was trying to evaluate.

As others pointed out, this is not 12 ft long, and that's probably a good thing. It's close to 7' tip to tip. The ad is also not very clear because the length is fixed, not "extendable". Fully extended height depends on how tall you are and how high you can lift it. This tool replaced my Craftsman gas trimmer. It is lighter and easier to handle and I can reach higher and deeper than I could before. It also cuts thicker branches and the battery lasts longer than I do. I looked at many online and I think this is a solid choice. Besides the high quality of the DeWalt brand, some features to compare with others are 22" cutting blades, 1" max branch diameter, and 4 AH battery. I haven't found others that can match these specs. Unless you really want to buy something cheaper, you can't go wrong with this.

Pole is NOT Extendable & Trimmer Head Pivot Joint Seems Weak; time will tell if it'll last. I'm 6'2" / 190lbs and standing on the ground this will not cut a 12' high flat top on a bush as advertised. Maybe if you hold it with your arms fully extended, which will blowout your rotator cuff, and it's unsustainable for long-term usage. It'll barely cut a 12' high flat top on a bush when I stand on my 3' Podium Step Ladder, and I wouldn't say that's comfortable to use like that either. I'd say if you have a 6' Podium Step Ladder 12' flat top cut would probably be attainable in long-term use. This unit came w/3-LED Fuel Gauge on the battery (it charges on the DCB107 charger that came with my DeWalt drill, so I don't need two separate chargers). It comes with a harness that's a huge benefit no matter how you're using it and it has a plastic protective cover for the blades. It cuts pretty good and battery life is more than adequate for what I need. It'll handles "okay" 3/8"-to-1/2" diameter stalks on my Orange Jubilee/Yellow Bell vine plants (I wouldn't want to try to cut anything much bigger). The specs say and I read a review that said it'd cut 1", which isn't even possible since 1" diameter stalks won't even fit into the opening of the blade; 3/4" diameter would fit and I question if cutting material that size is sustainable long-term.

This is junk! Do NOT buy! Look at photos. I usually trust Dewalt which is why I bought this. That tiny screw is the only thing holding the big heavy clippers onto the pole. It is just a matter of time before this cracks or the screw cracks. There is a lot of tension on this joint when you are cutting bushes. Pulling sideways, pulling up or down. This is not a professional cutter. The 3rd pic is the joint for the pole. It constantly gets knocked about and unscrewed which makes the trimmer stop working. You tighten it up and it works again but stops over and over. Odd design. The whole thing wobbles and wiggles. I was so surprised it didn't break in the week I had it. It is plastic all about. I had no problems with the battery. Lasted long enough. If you have one small hedge, maybe this will work for years for you. I didn't think it would last the season on my land. That tiny screw is a really bad idea.
