These are excellent, reasonably-priced replacement water filters. They filter the water pretty quickly and remove all of the nasty chlorine taste from our city water supply. Even the dogs are happier drinking the water from these filters. These filters only filter 50 gallons!! That's only a month or so per filter :( For a $75 dollar filter, you'd think they last longer. What a rip off. Never again. I'm returning this overpriced filter. Plus they don't mention anywhere on their listing how many gallons this filter lasts because they know people won't buy it. Shady business tactic. Background As a former Berkey filter owner (sadly lost in a move), I was looking for a replacement that could handle both home use and travel scenarios like camping or road trips. These Culligan ceramic filters seemed like a promising option. Setup & Assembly The filters are fairly easy to assemble, but here’s an important heads up: handle those ceramic filters with care! They can break if dropped, so take your time during installation. Break-in Period - Important! Plan ahead when setting up these filters. The manufacturer recommends processing 3-4 rounds of water before drinking the filtered water, and I can confirm this is essential. I got curious and tried a drop after the first filtering - it definitely tastes like clay if you rush it! The break-in period is worth the wait for proper taste. Maintenance Potential- Coming from Berkey filters, I’m hopeful that I can lightly scrub (not with a metallic scrubber - more like a hand natural brush) these ceramic filters to extend their lifespan, similar to what I did with my previous setup. The ceramic construction suggests this should be possible, though I’ll try and update as I gain more experience with them. Versatility & Compatibility- Perfect for my intended uses - the filters work without electricity, making them ideal for camping and emergency situations. They’re designed for Culligan gravity systems but are also compatible with other popular stainless steel gravity filter systems, which adds flexibility. Overall Impression- So far, these filters seem like a solid replacement for my lost Berkey system. The portability factor is exactly what I was looking for, and the comprehensive contaminant removal gives me confidence in the water quality. If you're here, I assume it's because you have a gravity filter system and are looking for replacement filters, but if you haven't used one before, they're incredibly handy. The filters last an incredibly long time compared to other water filters, they produce beautifully neutral clean tasting water, and even though they're expensive, given what they remove and how long they last, they're actually a good deal. These filters are the same size as you would expect if you've used a gravity filter before, but they're bigger than a newcomer would expect. They function amazingly well also, removing basically everything and producing nice clean tasting water. No hint of metallic or plasticky taste at all. They couldn't be easier to install, either. Simply screw them onto the bottom of your filtration system, and you're good to go. Overall, these are exactly what I wanted. They filter pretty slowly as all gravity filters do, but they remove more than just about any other filtration system out there, last a lot longer, and use almost no plastic at all in the filter.
