  • Great for Nature Photography edited after more use
I have only had this camera a week now but already love it. I upgraded from an Lumix FZ80 and am amazed at the difference is quality of my photos. First anyone who buys this camera will want to download the NX Studio software from the Nikon website. Since the camera uses Nikon NRW raw images so you want editing software which will get the most out of your images. NX Studio is a FREE DOWNLOAD you have nothing to lose by downloading it. I was amazed at how easy the editing software was to learn, and there is not upgrading for an additional fee. I was able to take some great shots at full zoom (125x) hand held, though a tripod would be better. I found some of the best results were using the Aperture priority, with the auto focus set to center weighted. When it was trying to identify the subject it had difficulty at max zoom. I also, set the ISO to the 100 - 400 range. Like I said only have had the camera for a week so I may revise this review as I get more experience with it. The wildlife refuge is only 15 miles away so I will be going there a lot. =================================================================================== First thing! Camera has a small sensor this will limit the quality of pictures. This was the compromise made to give it the incredible zoom capability. A bigger sensor would require a much bigger lens and much more weight. A large sensor camera with equivalent focal length coverage with Nikon body and Nikon lenses would cost maybe in the $15 – 20 thousand range. So this is a nice compromise for a hobbyist like myself. I discovered I really needed to use the Nikon Nx Studio to get the full potential from the images. GIMP and my other viewing software degraded the images when opening. I bring up the image in NX Studio then I can export to 16 bit tiff or adjustable quality Jpeg for editing in GIMP, or viewing in other software. Really get the NX Studio, unlike the editor that came with my Lumix, Nikon gives a good robust, easy to learn editor that does not require a paid upgrade to get the full program. Watch the tutorials on the Nikon website and you will be going in no time. This Camera needs a good solid tripod! I got the Rayburn DV-1, got a good Black Friday price. This tripod has an adjustable quick mount that allows me to adjust the balance point. Nikon should have mounted the tripod attachment point under the lens. Where they put it makes it very front heavy and would tip over on lighter tripods. LIM'S Quick Release Camera Tripod Dovetail Plate for Nikon P1000 is available on Amazon to fix this issue for $69.99. A tripod that has an adjustable quick mount avoids this expense. Don’t wast money on fast memory cards. This camera saves at about 40 Mbits per second tops. Faster SD cards won’t speed it up. Its sensor is not a match for top of the line Nikon or Cannon SLRs. Keep your expectations in line with this. It does have a very clear and bright EVF. In the various automatic modes it will only record Jpeg files. So if you spend the money on this camera learn to shoot and control your camera and save raw file and learn to use the NX studio in order to get the most from this camera. ... show more

  • Fabulous camera.
A really great camera in a carryable package. Nikon SnapBridge software is awful actually. Rarely connects to camera. Only one mode actually works consistently and that is luckily the AutoUpload mode. As long as you have that setup on the camera and the app is running on your phone, photos are uploaded to the iCloud automatically. It really is terrific. The rest of the SnapBridge app is worthless and should be ignored unless you are looking to waste a few hours trying to get it to work. The camera has a crazy zoom capability that combines physical and digital zoom to achieve 2000mm. Yup, that’s a two and three zeros. Amazing for a camera that looks like a standard SLR and does not resemble or feel like a 10 pound rocket launcher as you wander about birding. ... show more

  • Great Camera for zooming in close on subjects
I was seeking a camera for under $1,000 that I could use to photograph birds. The Coolpix P1000 works quite well. It requires some skill and timing to get good bird photos, but the zoom is pretty fast and the auto focuse works very well most of the time. Birds move around and don't stay in one place long. But I've photographed songbirds at 40-50 feet away and gotten some sharp photos. I've photographed hummingbirds on a perch probably 30 feet away and gotten some very sharp, clear photos. I was told I would need to get a DSLR or a mirrorless camera for $500 or so and then spend another $1,000+ for a telephoto lens, but this camera will do the job. It even has a bird setting on the mode dial. A great value. ... show more

  • May be a grey market item
It's not mentioned in the product listing, but this may be a grey market (foreign sold) Nikon Coolpix P1000 camera. I just received it and noticed the sticker on the bottom of the box (see picture). There was no Nikon USA warrantee card in the box, but all the appropriate accessories were included in an original Nikon box. The lens and screens looked flawless with no scratches or fingerprints. Both the back screen and electronic viewfinder looked good with no dead pixels. The camera was clean with no noticeable blemishes. Amazon included a European style travel adapter plug and a power cable that doesn't appear to go with this product. The camera came with factory reset menus that needed to be setup for my preferences and date/timezone information. I did get the camera to sync with the Snapbridge app on my android phone and that seemed to be working as well. Once I get a chance to take some photos with the camera, I will update this review with my thoughts. So far, it seems good except I would have liked to have known this was a potentially grey market camera with no Nikon USA warrantee before I bought it. That should be included in the product listing. No a huge deal for me as I purchased the Asurion 3-year Accident Protection Plan with the camera, but for those who don't, they should know that Nikon USA is unlikely to provide any warrantee support. *UPDATE* 03/13/2023 * - I've had an opportunity to take a few photos with the camera. First thoughts, IT'S HEAVY! I used a Canon SX50 for about 10 years before this Nikon P1000. The difference in weight is significant. The Nikon is nearly 3x as heavy as the Canon due to the much larger zoom lens. As for photo quality, I am impressed. I knew going into this that I wasn't going to get DSLR quality photos, but for the small 1/2.3 sensor, it's better than the Canon SX50. It's a bit higher resolution (16mp on the Nikon, 12 on the Canon), though that may impact it's low-light performance. I haven't tried to use it in low light yet. The Canon SX50 had pretty severe chromatic aberration at it's full zoom extent, whereas on this Nikon, the chromatic aberration is far less and not noticeable to my eye. I've mostly shot in jpg so far, so I can't speak to the RAW photos, but I assume they will allow for some better photos once I start shooting RAW. One note, the Moon and Bird Watching settings only allow you to shoot in JPG, not RAW. This can be overcome by shooting in P Mode or S, A, M modes. The additional photos I've attached to this review were taken at full 3000mm zoom, or pretty close to that, hand-held. Trying to stay steady with all that lens weight out in front of you is difficult and I would definitely recommend a tripod or monopod. With a high enough shutter speed and good lighting, it is possible to shoot hand-held at that zoom though. I'm a little concerned with the toughness of this camera. My old Canon SX50 was tough and took a few tumbles over the last 10 years, but the Nikon being so heavy probably wouldn't fair as well. I've ordered a leather camera case/cover to help protect it. ... show more
