This things does split kindling very well, and the included 4lb? hammer really helps power the wood through. Splitting kindling can be an often tedious task, and this doesn't alleviate that, but you're not going to end up in the ER when you accidentally whack a finger with the hatchet while holding little slivers of wood. That being said, it does take up some real estate on the floor and takes a bit more time than the old way. I do personally still prefer an axe or hatchet though, as I do like to live dangerously. ... show more

As long as I have some split wood, I can easily make kindling, all day long. It's not really very big, but it suits my needs exactly. I highly recommend this product.

    • Strong Steel Splitter
This splitter is strong and seems well made. It could be bigger. If it were bigger, it would also be more stable. It will only split small pieces. Also make sure the whole log will fit in or things won't go as well. It came with some screws to apparently screw into wood anchors to hold it down. I am using about 12 inch steel stakes instead. They actually fit perfectly in the holes in the device to anchor. If I do not keep this thing in a decent coat of oil, I am positive it will rust. Also, having to anchor it like I am doing will make it harder to deal with when I have to move it. ... show more

I have wanted one of these wood splitters for a long time! I am happy with this model because it is sturdy and well made compared to others I have seen. It came with the heavy hammer and gloves. This splitter is a nice size to handle the 5-6" round pieces of wood I tried. I am going to keep this under our covered parking area where it will not get rained on. If you leave this out in the rain, it will rust. I need to cut a log round to attach it to with the heavy-duty screws that came with it. Not all wood will work with this splitter. There are mostly mesquite trees on our property, and they are way too hard! I tried some other random logs, and they made nice kindling without too much effort. Old dry 2x4s split pretty easily! I am looking forward to finding more wood to chop now! ... show more

    • Safe and reliable wood splitter
Safe and reliable, the only thing I have discovered with it is some hardwoods do not play well with it. But most everything does just fine. There is enough gap between the blade and the top ring to angle Compressed energy log to cut it down if need be. The height of the ring, sits high enough that if you are using the 5 pd (4.5pd) hammer that came with it, and you are hitting the wood flat with the hammer, the hammer head will not and cannot make contact with the blade. The top ring will make contact with the handle of the hammer before impacting. Now if you are swinging and making contact at an angle where the handle is not level with the top of the splitter then sure you could potentially damage the hammer and the blade. I keep mine near my fire place, for splitting kindling for the AM fire starting. ... show more

It makes it so easy to split the firewood! It’s pretty sturdy and steady. Super easy to use and it will last forever! We have so much wood in the backyard and kept buying firewood… not anymore! Great product at a great price!
