  • works great
I love it so far. It's a one person espresso bar. The bean hopper and discard is a lot smaller than my old machine, but I get counter space back. My old machine allowed you to brew 2 americanos for one full cup of coffee. This only had the option for 1 americano. It will brew either one or 2 shots of espresso. ... show more

  • Pretty compact all-in-one one-touch machine (well, sort of)
Frothing milk is a separate function with a separate button you have to press after your coffee is done brewing. And no, you don't get a milk pitcher included with this. You must supply your own. If you've never owned a machine with a milk wand before, you need to know that this requires removal and cleaning after each use (or at least remove it and drop it in a cup of warm, soapy water for later cleaning). Otherwise, it pretty much instantly clogs and gets gross. I mean, it is fresh milk, after all. This takes up surprisingly little space for all it does. It's especially narrow in the horizontal direction, which is key for those with little counter space. And the buttons are front and (top) center for easy access. The water tank is at the back, although it's not hard to fill. I personally always put appliances like this either on a super-thin plastic cutting board or a little wheeled counter-top appliance caddy to make it easy to pull forward. You do need to remove the water tank when filling it. Personally, I would advise keeping a bottle of distilled water nearby, as that way you won't have to go through periodic descaling. If your tap water has any minerals in it, these will build up. Even if you use standard bottled water, most of that has some mineral content too. Distilled water has none. Note that the hopper of this only holds about 3.5 oz coffee beans, which isn't much, so you will be filling that frequently. This product page claims it holds 5 oz of beans, but there's no way. It's definitely only a few ounces. And you must use whole beans with a machine like this. That's one of the limitations of its convenience. You cannot grind your own in a separate grinder or buy pre-ground coffee. I will also note that I had a very similar machine from a different brand whose manual instructed NOT TO USE DARK-ROAST COFFEE BEANS, as the extra-oiliness of those would cause the grinder to jam up and malfunction over time. Since the grinder is integrated and dispenses straight to the brewing mechanism, there's no way to clean it by grinding and then discarding a handful of white rice the way you would with a standalone grinder. Over time those oils are going to build up on the stainless steel blades, and there's no way to remove them. I would imagine you should stick to medium or blond roasts with any all-in-one machines just to be sure you don't cause it problems just as the warranty expires ;) Adjusting the grind on this is a bit tricky. There is a mechanism for doing it, but you are only supposed to turn the dial WHILE THE BEANS ARE GRINDING. Weird, right? But apparently you can break it if you turn it while it's not in motion. I'd suggest trying the machine out after the initial cleaning to see if you like the brew that comes out and then make a second one, making any adjustments as soon as the grind starts. And then leave it at that! I'm not sure what Cuisinart means when they say this machine has "up to 19 bars of pressure." This isn't a professional-grade machine, but for people just looking to make fun drinks at home and avoid the hassle and daily outlay for coffee shop drinks, especially in a household with more than one person, this is worth it, and functions quite well enough. I don't think I would use the cold-brew option, as that generally uses more of your precious and expensive beans. I don't think there's any way to do a cold-brew process without using about double the amount of coffee as is used for hot brewing. And coffee is just way too expensive these days. ... show more

  • Love it! Extremely compact, and super simple to use. Very little effort or cleaning. Good espresso.
CUISINART AUTOMATIC ESPRESSO MACHINE This is a winner. I’ve loved espresso drinks since I lived in Italy many years ago. At that time, it was difficult to get real espresso in the US outside of trendy urban coffee houses, and solutions for home brewing were limited. The gleaming imported Italian steel machines cost thousands of dollars, and took up half your counter space. The low-tech options didn’t scale well for guests. Over the years I’ve tried many espresso makers. The only ones I still have and use are the Bialetti-style classic stove-top coffeemakers I brought back from Italy, and a gorgeous gull-wing style manual press All-Clad used to make. Neither is ideal. The Bialetti-style coffeemakers are classic and indestructible, but like most small espresso makers, they are also fiddly, messy, and slow if you need to make multiple drinks. The (discontinued) All-Clad is beautiful and fun. Everyone wants to use it once or twice. But it doesn’t have nearly the pressure and heat you need to make really good espresso. And it’s very slow. With both, you need to have a separate milk frothier, which is fine, but is another thing to clean. I found myself avoiding cappuccinos because with the grinding and tamping and pressing and steaming there was just too much cleaning up to do for each drink. Eventually I broke down and bought an inexpensive (under $1000) barista-style machine, but it was the least satisfactory of all. It combined the disadvantages of an expensive machine (complicated settings that made it difficult for guests to use, and so required the host to make everyone’s drinks one at a time), with the disadvantages of an inexpensive machine (flimsy materials, inadequate pressure and heat, hard to clean, etc.). A stay in an Airbnb in Vienna showed us another possibility. The apartment had an automatic espresso machine – just load with beans and water and press a button. Magic! At the time there was nothing obviously like it in the US. In the early 2000s some offices (including ours) had big automatic machines, but it wasn’t until about 15 years ago that Nespresso and others really ramped up their automatic home machines and ad campaigns. We bought a Nespresso machine early on, but found it disappointing. It lacked the necessary heat and pressure, and was plastic and flimsy inside. Things kept breaking. We went through three machines in as many years (fortunately we bought the warranties), then upgraded to their top all-metal model. It was good, but it didn’t have a frothier, and they added a new limitation: you could no longer use your own reusable pods and your own coffee. For us, that was a dealbreaker for three reasons: their coffee was too acidic for my stomach, we didn’t want to contribute to massive landfills, and the pods were expensive ($.75/ea at the time). George Clooney could afford them, but the ongoing cost of multiple drinks for guests and even ourselves added up quickly. Now – with this Cuisinart automatic we think we’ve found our machine. There are several features that are important to us: • It’s extremely compact. It’s the same height as our Keurig, but slimmer and only slightly deeper • It incorporates its own grinder, so you don’t have to mess with grinders and tampers and used grounds bins on your counter • It makes excellent espresso with crema • It includes a milk frothier, which is easy to clean because it’s just a removable external spigot • It can do cold or ambient brewing • It has settings that give you the option -- but not the necessity – of adjusting. We are happy with the default pre-sets, but adjustment options include: o the amount of water (e.g. default is classic 4 oz for an Americano) o the fineness of the grind o the speed of the brewing cycle: default, eco, fast o the illumination of the control lights o timings for auto-shut off o timings for pre-brewing of grinds • the machine has easy to read indicator lights that tell you if you need to add water or beans, or to empty the grinds • The machine’s operation is incredibly simple, straight-forward, and effortless – it turns on with the barest touch of a button, and lighted icons on invisible buttons display your choices. Anyone can use it by themselves almost intuitively • No pods means no landfill and no recurring costs Potential drawbacks: • There is a lot of plastic in the machine, and I worry about broken parts • The lighted icons and light-touch buttons are critical. I worry about them breaking or burning out • Commercial machines have more power and heat • You can’t switch types of coffee from one cup to another Overall, we’re thrilled with this machine. It’s so small and simple and fun to use. It really solves all our problems. Our main problem now is just is trying not to drink too much caffeine! ... show more
