Cuisinart puts the same toasting giblets into every one of their toasters, from this <$30 unit up to their $200 fancybois with all the computerized BS. Since nobody makes good toasters anymore, might as well get the cheapest one that does the bare minimum, since you'll be replacing it again in 3 years. This one toasts bread acceptably evenly, but not what I would call well; one side is always darker than the other, and it's not perfectly even on either side. The temperature control is predictable, the buttons are responsive and the toast-plunger-lever thingy works almost most of the time. You usually only have to push it down 2 or 3 times to get it to work. You'd probably honestly be better off finding a good used toaster from the 1970's or 1980's on eBay; it'll cost a little more, but it'll also far outlast this chintzy piece of just good enough. 4 stars because it's no worse than any other appliance on the market today. ... show more

I originally bought this toaster as a temporary solution until the one i wanted to buy was back in stock. But after using this toaster I no longer see the need in buying a more expensive one because this one does everything I need it to. At this price point you will NOT find a better toaster. It's simple, yet looks attractive on my counter. The shape and design makes it easy to clean. I have toasted bagels, and other types of bread in it and so far it works great. I notice in alot of reviews, not only for this toaster but many others as well, that people complain about the toasters not toasting "perfectly even". I never realized how many OCD people there were in the world until I read those reviews. LOL. The reality is no toaster will ever make a piece of toast exactly the same shade top to bottom, front to back. It's simply unrealistic due to science. Toast is toast. As long as it's toasted, and not burnt... who cares what it looks like? It is important to remember that different types of breads, and different brands of breads use different ingredients. Therefore my toasting experience may not be the same as yours. You have to experiment with your new toaster to find the settings that work for you based on the kind of bread you are toasting. Different ingredients in different breads cause them to toast within different time frames. My preferred setting on this toaster is 3. I started at 5, then 4, and kept going lower until I found a setting that didn't burn the brand of bread I buy. You will have to do the same. But once you find the heat level setting that works for your brand and type of bread, it's smooth sailing moving forward. I would also like to address the "chemical smell", "burning plastic smell" reviews. YES THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL THE FIRST TIME I USED THE TOASTER. It's normal when you are running electricity through heated metal coils for the first time. Again... this is science. It is to be expected. IT WILL GO AWAY AFTER A COUPLE USES. I turned on the toaster for 3 back to back cycles without bread, then 3 back to back cycles with bread that I threw away. After that... NO SMELL. Make sure you have the windows open when you do this. This is currently the #1 top rated toaster on amazon. I think it deserves that spot in the rankings. Buy it. ... show more

Five stars: 1) Toasts quickly and evenly. See photo. That's frozen whole wheat bread, on a setting of 4, which is about 120 seconds. Yes I timed it. I was tired of my old toaster taking forever. 2) Easy to understand, without looking at a manual. The bagel button toasts one side of each bagel half. Defrost is good for things like a frozen pop tart. Reheat is self explanatory, as is the cancel button. 3) Easy to operate. The lever slides down easily. Once it pops up, you can actually lift it further up if needed to remove small things like English muffins. The bottom of the toaster has a few cord management hooks, so I moved the cord to come out of the back and shortened since it sits right next to an outlet. The cord does not come out of the front unless you want it to. This is pretty obvious when you turn the toaster upside down. 4) Easy to clean with slide out crumb tray in the back. 5) It was $30. As with any low-cost mass-produced item, someone somewhere is going to get a dud, but mine was fine. Yo can spend triple this amount and still just have a toaster that makes toast. ... show more

I purchased this to replace a much more expensive unit that has given years of good service. I seriously considered replacing it with the same late model that still gets top reviews by serious publications that also included this unit for one fourth the price. While this toaster has settings like defrost and bagel it does not have self adjusting carriage or time lights, pull out cleaning tray or chime to let you know its done. However as reviewed it gives you even toasting with bread, waffles, or bagel.. Its a simple machine and not an electronic marvel. If I had a complaint its that the cord comes from underneath on the right side. It still worked for me but I can see where this could be an issue for others. ... show more

This is an affordable, compact, sleek looking toaster! Yes it is plastic - but therefore lightweight. I keep mine in a cabinet so I prefer the lighter weight. First time use I did notice a slight new-plastic-y smell but I'm sure that will diminish over time. Normal sliced whole wheat bread on #3 toasted to perfection on both sides! ... show more

Good toaster. Would have given 5 stars if it had lasted more than 7 yrs(it does not get daily use) but perhaps that is only wishful thi king these days. Bought one to replaced the one that died because it does a good job for a toaster. Will probably buy again if this one lasts 7 yrs or more.

This toaster is great, it’s super efficient and it does a good job carmelizing the surface. Looks great and stores easy. However, it lost a star in my rating because the sides get pretty warm. Our family stores our toaster away when not in use and I don’t feel safe putting back in cupboard when it’s get so warm. Yes it cools off fast and we are glad we bought but a bit more insulation would have been a good thing. ... show more

We’ve done toast, bagels & English muffins so far. The only complaint is the electrical cord is too stiff to store properly. That’s the reason for the 4 stars.
