  • More than meets the eye!
The 3D printing world is full of budget choices all of which advertise features and promises of ease of use, silent operation, etc. I've tried and owned many of these and have had varying degrees of success. My 12 year old wanted to start printing his own things so I wanted to find a great beginner printer for him that took a lot of the hassle out of the printing process (I'm looking at you bed leveling) Along comes a relatively new name in the market, the Cubicon Prime. It comes in the new wave of Auto-Leveling budget entries but at a price point well below many of its competitors. Packaging - The Prime comes well packaged from the factory with plenty of foam to protect it against even the roughest of deliveries. Everything is secure within due to foam spacers and plastic wrapping. Assembly - For a complete beginner it should take about 10-20 minutes depending on how mechanically minded you are. There are a total of 16 bolts to attach the frame, direct drive extruder, filament runout sensor, and spool holder. Component Quality - The Prime is made from quality aluminum extrusions with a great glass bed that grips the prints well. There is a color touch screen as well. The fans could be quieter and Cubicon has assured me they're working on improving these. Automatic Bed Leveling - The prime uses a strain gauge built into the direct drive assembly. It measures 16 points on the fixed bed and then homes to the Z-Offset for setting that as well (Be sure to press save after leveling) The Direct Drive Extruder - This is great for a beginner due to the fact that it's easier to load and unload, less prone to clogging and it allows you to print a variety of filaments including flexibles. Test Prints - The first two test prints shown were printed with the included filament and files from the SD card. The Calicat was printed with the same filament via Cura in .2 layer height(I forgot to turn off the brim, hence the rough bottom surface) The Benchy, Gecko, and Anycubic Cobra were all printed with ESUN PLA+ .2 layer height and were printed with no estep calibration or PID tuning and they look great for an out of the box print. The Cobra filled the entire build plate and printed perfectly over 18 hours. There are a few things I would like to see Cubicon include with future iterations into this market. While this is a dual z-axis printer there is no synchronizing belt here as can be found on the competition. The fans could use some adjustments for noise as well. However these two things are easily swapped out/upgraded by the user due to the much lower price point here. When compared to the Anycubic Vyper, the Creality Ender 3S1, the Mingda Magician X and the like the Cubicon is less flash and more substance....for less price. There's much more here than meets the eye. ... show more

  • Lcd stopped working after 3 days
I'm new to 3d printing and this printer is extremely easy to work with. Building it is easy, changing the settings is simple and it prints as good as the other top brands. With that being said, the fans are extremely loud, with the cooling fan in particular being extra egregious. The cooling fan makes a buzzing sound and vibrates the entire extruder enclosure. The lcd also stopped working after 3 days with no reason as to why. It sustained no damage and always sat on the same table. I tried all the troubleshooting steps and nothing worked. You're better off going with a more reputable brand. ... show more

  • Reasonable starter 3D printer, love the auto bed leveling - has some quirks though
This is a reasonable starter 3D printer. It has a standard print area size and good capability for various materials. I also have a Creality Ender 3 so my comparisons in this review will be based on that. Pros: 1. Autoleveling - there's nothing more frustrating (especially when first getting into 3D printing) than wasting a bunch of time and material starting prints and having them not lay their first layer correctly as a result of a misaligned bed (i.e. the surface that printer prints onto being coplanar with the plane the extrusion nozzle moved around for each layer). This printer autolevels (and only takes a handful of minutes to do it) which saves lots of stress compared to my Creality Ender 3. If I have one recommendation for someone looking for their first 3D printer, it's to make sure it has an auto-leveling bed. 2. Maximum print speed is noticably faster than my Ender so prints don't take quite as long. I have found that reducing the speed slightly helps significantly with getting cleaner edges on my prints. I am not printing commercially or printing perpetually so I do often run the printer at about 70% speed. 3. It doesn't seem limited by material. I've had good printing experiences with both PLA and ABS thus far. ABS did require using an enclosure though (I tried without a couple times and my prints did not work due to excessive warping). 4. Easy assembly. There's not too many pieces and the instruction were clear, it didn't take much time at all to assemble! 5. Hasn't jammed yet! My Ender has jammed a couple times since I started running this one in parallel with it which can be a bit of a hassle to remove the nozzle and clean everything out, but this printer hasn't jammed once! Hoping it stays that way. Cons: 1. Setting the temperatures is VERY annoying. Regardless of weather I preheat then start a print, or let it preheat after selecting my print, I have to set the temperature manually by increasing the nozzle and extruder temperature in ten degree increments. That wouldn't be the end of the world except whenever it reaches temperature and starts to actually print, it resets the already-established temperatures to default values that are too cold to print even PLA (extruder temperature is either 100 degrees or 150 degrees fahrenheit, even if I'd already set it to ~200 for that specific print). This means I can't just start the print, set the temps, and let it run... I have to wait until it's preheated and then reinput the temperatures again as it starts printing. I have messed around in the settings and can't for the life of me find a way to adjust these useless default temperatures. 2. The software. The software it comes with is a modified version of one of the common, widely available programs that will turn a 3D model into an extrusion path for your 3D printer to follow. It works similar to most but some of the settings seem suboptimal. I've tweaked some of the available settings (such as removing the raft from the print, modifying the internal solid area) but I still find it doesn't print how I like. The most noticable issue I have is that minor cantilevers (where the print gets slightly wider from one layer to the next) do not print nearly as smoothly as my Creality version of the software does (even for the same model). As a result, I have stopped using the software that came with this 3D printer entirely and instead use my existing software. 3. Noise. This is minor, but the printer emits a very loud beep when you turn it on. It's high pitched and pierces through the house (read: hope no one is asleep). It doesn't make much noise while printing with the exception of some fan noise, but that beep is very irritating. This printer has some quirks, but with some tinkering (and babysitting the start of your prints), it does work well. I would recommend it to someone looking to get into 3D printing. ... show more
