  • Works well if you assemble and install it properly.
I bought this for short term usage as I was buying a pair of kayak and didn't have anything to hold them. Ignore the bad reviews. This item, while the tubing could be thicker, works just fine. People are assembling it wrong. The bolts are CARRIAGE BOLTS and have a square shank under the head that has to fit down into the square holes on top of the frame. To assemble: slide foam protectors on to frames slide rubber sleeve over one side of frame slide the two sections of frame together until holes line up though the rubber sleeve place square metal on underside of rubber sleeve with its bum towards the rubber sleeve Install 4 of the short carriage bolts (no washer) through the outside 4 holes MAKING SURE THE SQUARE LUG INSERTS INTO THE TUBING. add a washer, and locking nut to the bottom of all 4 bolts and tighten, ensuring the bolts haven't come out of the square holes. their heads should be well below the level of the rubber. place 2 long bolts into the center holes ensuring lug enters hole properly. place unit onto roof rack tall side facing inboard of car slide rectangle plate over center two bolts with the bump in this plate facing down, making sure you dont push them out of their square hole up top Now you have a choice on how to secure those middle two bolts. For short trips you can use the knobs, which make the racks easy to remove, or for long term installation (and security) you can use nuts (use locking nuts not the normal ones provided) The provided strap is only made to go from one frame loop, over the kayak, to the other. this is NOT enough to secure a kayak. You need to use other straps around the kayak to the roof rack, not to these J-hooks. You also need bow and stern lines that run from the front and back of the kayaks to your bumpers below. Those that lost kayaks in these reviews DID NOT SECURE THEIR BOATS PROPERLY and many never installed the j-hooks properly. They did a poor job and endangered the life of others. ... show more

  • Bent bracket
The bracket included to go under the bar on a roof rack is flimsy. The rest of the product is good

  • Needs modification
A great concept but with design flaws. I bought these so I could get the kayak up so I could also puy my 4 wheeler in my truck. The concept worked.....for a while. There are rubber plate that bolts go through. The rubber stretches, so it does not stay tight. I bought a heavy duty ladder rack from Lowes and mounted the kayak rack to the cross pieces. Kayak could not be slid on one end at a time. The rack rotated forward because it could not be tightened down due to rubber. So, I got my son to help me, one of us one each end. Kayak fit perfect. 200 miles down to road, kayak was no longer at 45 degree angle, it as perfectly flat. The rack had slid accross the horizontal arm. There was some rub on the ladder rack, so I inserted a piece of foam. Ok for another 200 miles. I used to black cam buckle straps that came with it. Big mistake. I was diving 55 mph, when I saw a flash of orange in my rear view mirror. The TWO front straps had of broken, that led to the back TWO straps also breaking. I had put a steel cable on the kayak to prevent theft. That kept the kayak connected to my truck as I drug it down the highway until I could pull over, about 300 yards. The kayak mount needs to be drilled and attached to the cross member with a bolt! My kayak weighs 78 lbs. It is a Peception Outlaw fishing kayak, it is not heavy. So, the rack need to be better connected to the mount with bolts. The black straps are garbage, throw them away and get some NRS boat straps that are far stronger. Fortunately, my kayak survived with just road rash. ... show more

  • completely unsatisfied
Straps broke on first use and the racks came loose after driving for 30 minutes causing our kayak to fly off our car in the middle of the highway and broke our kayak.

  • Complete Junk
70mm bolts drive into my roof. Missing hardware. Flimsy junk. The most expensive isn't always the best, but the cheapest is almost always the worst. This is the cheapest.
