  • Works awesomly
Please excuse any grammatical errors in advance. I'm delighted to share my experience with this product, which has met and exceeded expectations. The setup process is remarkably straightforward, allowing individuals with even a basic understanding of technology to get it up and running without hassle. It's worth mentioning how impressively the product is packaged, which reflects the manufacturer's commitment to ensuring it arrives in pristine condition. On one occasion, I encountered a minor hiccup with the delivery process; however, it's important to clarify that this did not reflect the quality of the product itself. Despite this, I feel compelled to highlight the exceptional customer support that promptly addressed and resolved the issue. Their efficiency and helpfulness left a lasting impression on me. I have purchased three of these devices and each has performed flawlessly, reinforcing my confidence in the product's reliability and quality. Based on my positive experiences, I've enthusiastically recommended these to my family members. The seamless integration and functionality it offers have greatly enhanced our multimedia experiences, making it a staple in our digital setup. Whether you're looking to streamline your streaming services or simply searching for a reliable multimedia device, this product stands out for its ease of use, robust performance, and supportive customer service. It's a purchase decision I'm thoroughly satisfied with, and I'm confident others will share this sentiment. ... show more

  • Cutting the cord...
My cable bill due on the 24th of this month is $265. I've rationalized the amount thinking if I calculate it as a daily use fee then it's more justifiable. Sorry, but I've gotten to the end of my rope and want to cut my cable cord in favor of using much cheaper streaming as my main source of TV entertainment. So, what does it take. Well, it takes something like Chromecast or similar and a wifi source that allows for a strong internet connection. I'm a perfect candidate and hope to cut my bill in half even after subscribing to premium streaming services like Netflix, Prime and others. The way I look at it is I can always come back to cable if streaming gets to be too big a pain, but I'm optimistic. So, I've been playing with my new Chromecast and there are advantages that outweigh the disadvantages, imo. The signal reception is perfect, so I don't have any tech issues that are a constraint on picture quality. The only negative I've found to this point is navigation to the subscription services. There are a few extra steps, sometimes, navigating to a one service or another. Some of the account validation challenges can be a pain. Some services don't store cookies that could easily make authorization automatic. In my view, when you've successfully logged into a service through their validation process then that result should remembered forever on that device. I don't appreciate having to pull up a text or email every time I change to another streaming procider. Bottom line is Chromecast works exactly as advertised and I'm happy. I saved a couple of bucks because I don't have a 4k TV, but the high def is more than adequate. You'll need to survive a short learning curve because there are unfamiliar processes to figure out, but if a 73 year old like me can do it, so you can you. Honestly, for what Chromecast does it's a stone bargain. I just wish I had a cheaper source of wifi as a connection. That would be the cherry on top, so to speak. I suppose I could use my cell hotspot, but I only get one bar where I live. Everything is a compromise, right? Now, I'm going to get on something of soapbox and say a few things certain people might not want to hear. My cable company, which is the biggest in the country is simply gouging it's customers. Think about it for a moment. We're talking about a LOT of $$$ for what is basically an electric signal coming through a wire. Sure, I know they've got expenses, but it's not like they're investing in my cable infrastructure to improve my service. My cable has been in place for over 30 years and it's incredibly unreliable. I pay way too much for that kind of mediocre service and so do you. It's a basic flaw in Capitalism. Our economic system is the BEST on the planet, but it's not perfect. Price gouging isn't illegal and companies naturally want to reward all of their stock holders and return a profit. But, when we see CEO salaries in the millions and incredibly high pricing models straining middle class wallets, well, it makes me crazy. Elon Musk has inserted thousands of Starlink satellites in low earth orbits right above our heads for a reason. He's taking communications to a whole new level, a much better level. It won't be long before we'll be able to stream through that kind of satellite service. And given his cheap reusable rocket tech to carry literally hundreds of micro-satellites into orbit with each launch the cost of deployment will hopefully be small and reflected in our monthly bills. I will switch to that kind of new tech for my basic wifi when it becomes available. In the meantime, I'm cutting the cord with my cable provider and hopefully never looking back, but never say never, right? ... show more

  • It's cheap ($29: 2K version), fast enough, and works well for Youtube, which is all I use it for
I don't have or use Netflix or any other paid streaming services... I just wanted to watch Youtube on my (older, non-smart) TV and this was a cheap way to do so. The remote is fine and small and comfortable, the GUI (user interface) is pretty much what you see on Roku or Amazon streaming devices, so: usable, and even though this 2K version is supposed to be slower than the 4K version, it seems fast/responsive enough to me. The ONLY complaint/comment I'll make is that for whatever reason, Google has seen fit to disable the ability to share Youtube video (like email a video link to someone) in the Chromecast GUI, unlike when I've used Youtube on a PC or small/old Android/Samsung tablet: on those devices, if you want to share a video with a friend, you simply click 'share' and choose a destination email address and send. On this Chromecast w/Google TV device, there doesn't seem to be ANY WAY to share a video at all... I've pretty much looked everywhere in the interface (which is finite) and can find no way to do it. Just strange IMO. So, for the price, this is pretty good, at least in the limited way I use it (only watching Youtube). There do seem to be plenty of free content outside of Youtube that the Chromecast gives you access to, but I really haven't looked into it too much. ALSO: there's no native (Google) gmail/email app for this device: so you can't do casual email with it UNLESS you install a basic web browser app (there are a few to choose from) and then use the browser to access gmail. I did this just to see if it worked: it DOES, but it's kind of clumsy, even for short emails, so I'm not likely to use it for that... it's odd (again) that Google didn't see fit for make/provide a basic gmail client for this device, but that's how it is. Overall, considering features/price, I'd give this product a B+ grade. If it had native email support, and if the Youtube interface was as full-featured as regular Youtube accessed via a web browser (or even just a ten-year-old tablet) I'd have given it an A+ ... show more
