  • Decent for beginners.
I bought a 20' one, though it has worked very well, I wish I would have built it instead. (link below) Some issues of note: 1: The chickens will dig down and make the bottom rail suspend between dirt they haven't gotten to....yet; some of the support posts were actually hanging in the air before I noticed it. Consider lining the interior perimeter with some other form of barrier like wood logs, a strip of linoleum, untreated lumber (not pressure treated due to unsafe chemicals but applying TimberPro UV’s Internal Wood Stabilizer (IWS) okay to use). 2: You'll definitely want to attach hardware cloth at the bottom; 2' up and bury it 2' out. Not only are there areas where baddies can get in but my more escape inclined Laydies were able to dig under and get out. 3: There wasn't enough provided chicken-wire. I started from the back, worked my way to the front, and barely made it to the frontmost section. I had regular wire fencing from a previous project so I used that to complete the very front face of the run. I did the door piece last and oversized the wire section for it; this creates a one foot fence section covering more than just the gaps between the man-door and the bottom of the structure; picture a cupboard door on a face framed cabinet having more material than just covering the opening. I oversized it with the intention of the fence extending on the bottom/non-hinge-side bending in the direction of you opening the door. The hinge side flexes while the bottom sweeps and makes lines in the dirt. My thinking is that this will hinder an animal trying to get in just a smidge more than leaving the gaps. 4: I bought the "spire" roof so that I'd have a bit more vertical room plus snow and leaves would fall off. I'm 6'6 and can not stand upright inside, though. 5: The tarp given only covers the exact top and does not come down the sides at all. It's decent for sun but the rain and snow encroaches into the covered area more than I like so I replaced it with one that does go all the way down. I later replaced that with a clear plastic to allow for light to come in. 6: Use metal zip ties. The plastic ones won't hold up. 7: I have an Omelette Eglu coop, with its run, inside the run (runception!). This isn't as ideal as I had hoped and I'm going to bring the Eglu outside and connect it to one of the front sections so the Laydies have more room. Overall, I'd recommend this for someone who wants to get something up quick and relatively easy. If you're more inclined to build your own, there is an EZ-Frame bracket system that I would recommend over this one. Cheers! ... show more

  • Racoons can and will tear this fencing open.
Great for the price but you will have to buy hardware cloth to protect the bottom. Racoons can and will tear a hole in the fencing. Putting together is not terrible with helping hands. Tying the fencing to the whole thing is tedious, and exhausting for your hands if you don’t use hand tools a lot I imagine. I recommend having a trap next to your coop, and if you live in an area where you can not relocate the raccoon, you must murder, because if you don't they will figure out how to kill your chickens if anything fails in your system. ie coop door, loose boards. ... show more

  • A lot of little things add up
Pattern Name: Spire Size: 9.8’L x 19.7’W x 6.4’H
We needed a chicken run, so we looked at all of them carefully. This one looked sturdier and better designed than the others, and it was better than I imagined. We really love it and just ordered another one after another careful look at all of them. The quick connect saved a lot of time putting the frame together. Two adults quickly and easily put it together in a couple of hours, including lots of thinking and making sure we were doing it correctly. (The second one will go a whole lot faster!) The coated chicken wire was difficult until we figured out an easier method. One of us held the roll in place while the other pulled it up and over the top to the other side. We pulled it tight on both ends, then started the wire cut, then let go of it and continued cutting. Then we put a concrete block (can be anything at least 4 or 5 inches tall) under one of the support poles and zip tied one side down, then went up the pole on one side (about 4 ft), then went up the other pole to stretch it tight. Then continued up each side to the top. At that point, it seemed to be equally easy to start at the bottom again (with something under the support pole on that side), or to continue downward to the bottom. Repeat for each section. If you look closely at the other enclosures like this one, look at the width of the netting. All of the others I could find have netting that is half as wide, which requires an extra step of running the netting up and over, PLUS "knitting" the two pieces together. That's the reason why I paid $80 more than the one I was going to buy. Half as wide netting takes a lot more time and effort, and is much less sturdy. This is a permanent enclosure that we plan to keep for many years. (It is possible to move it to another place in the yard, but it's rather awkward and difficult to do.) The chicken wire is fine for us because the only predators we have are hawks. If you have other predators like possums or foxes or raccoons or snakes, you will need to add sturdy wire around the bottom at the very least, possibly even an electrified fence surrounding it and animal barrier fence underground. ... show more

  • A good start
Pattern Name: Spire Size: 9.8’L x 19.7’W x 6.4’H
It’s not terribly hard to assemble but you will have to reinforce multiple places. We took two trips to the hardware store and need at least one more. We used hardware clothe anywhere a predator could gain access. The netting that comes with it just isn’t strong enough to deter. Ground level, mostly. And 50 paving stones to add the weight it needs to not blow away. The tarp won’t hold up to too much wind or weight. We replaced that. My daily complaint is the door. It isn’t secure. The latch is, to put it kindly, difficult to manipulate, and there’s a good 2-3” of wide open space around the door for any even mildly curious predator to get in, or determined chicken to get out. We have the hardware cloth, a board, brick, and wheelbarrow currently on door duty, but plan on replacing it. But...for the money, it’s a good start. We didn’t set out to raise chickens. A rare on turned up in our yard and stayed. This run, with the above improvements, will keep her safe. We aren’t handy enough to build one ourselves. This one is good enough. ... show more
