Purchased as an upgrade to my 9 years old CB103. I was initially drawn to the look; the cutaway, comfort bevel and slotted head stock acted as savory gravy. I couldn't be happier with it. Stunning looks (everyone who sees it comments on it), good sustain and tonality up and down the fretboard. Initially shipped to a friend to hold and review for me (in another city) until I could meet him for a playing session. He told me he couldn't stop playing it and I may need to pry it from his hands when I showed up. After receiving it, I understood what he was talking about. He had for a week and -- after prying it from his fingers -- I've had it for a week now. There's a definite sound performance upgrade from the CB103. The Aquila Super Nylgut strings have a "rounded" sound quality that also carries well. The strings initially felt "sticky" but have improved immeasurably with daily play sessions. My friend didn't have to retune, but I do minor tuneups daily; once retuned, it holds tuning and tone very well. Performance (sound clarity and tone) stays very good with when playing either soft or hard (i.e. attacking the strings) even when switching between finger-picking or strumming styles. The instrument comes with a soft gig bag with minimal foam surround. The oversized lower bout (11") will not allow the instrument to fit in standard baritone cases, so I'm having problems finding a hard-shell case. Until I find one, I can use the gig bag or my Fusion double-baritone case (extra padding). But I'll need to be careful with carry-on airline travel. When I restring, I'll find out if I need beads to help with pass-thru (guitar style bridge) stringing as all of the various strings I've used are open-ended (no bead to lock down beneath the peg). The tuner works well, but I haven't had the chance to test the pickup yet. (And I appreciate that this setup uses CR2032 coin batteries instead of AA/AA.) I did a lot of research prior to this purchase. This the closest I could find to all the items on my checklist. Simply outstanding beauty, performance and value. The price point, cutaway and comfort bevel sealed the deal for me. (Yes, you can feel the subtle differences.) I would love a chance to play and compare it against the BEG95 to hear the difference between the Ebony and Bocote. If you get one of these, I seriously doubt you will be disappointed. Highly recommended! FOLLOW-UP (June 29): ================== Loving this instrument. I think the strings may not be Aquila Super Nylgut, but custom Caramel Carbon Fiber strings. As noted previously, nice, rounded tone -- definitely nice quality and not run of the mill strings. I had restrung my CB103 with D'Addario EJ87B that produces a brighter, more distinct and separated sound on the strings. On my restring of the BEG91, I may use D'Addarios. NOTE: I haven't been able to find Caramel baritone carbon fiber strings for sale anywhere. FOLLOW-UP (JULY 7): ================= 7 weeks in and the wound D-string is cut and frayed at the 2nd fret causing a buzz. Additional noticeable wear on frets 1-7. Amazon will not replace the string saying it is outside of the 30-day return window -- but this is not a product return, just looking for a replacement string. Tried to direct me to manufacturer's weblink for string replacement but there is no link. BEWARE if you need product support after 30 days -- there is none. I will need to do a full re-string to ensure I have a matching set. NOTE: I've never had strings fray after 7 weeks of playing on any of my multiple string instruments -- but this is the first set of Caramel strings that I've used. Removed a star due to poor product support. FOLLOW-UP (JULY 9): ================= D-string broke tonight while playing. Turns out there's an accessories pack in the outer pocket of the gig bag. Included is a full set of replacement strings and tool to remove the bridge peg. I restrung the D-string. We'll see how long this string lasts. (I still think the original should have lasted more than 7 weeks.) A product manual with the accessories lists a service contact email address. I will contact them regarding the D-string failing in 7 weeks. FOLLOW-UP (JULY 17): ================== Caramel Support responded that they will be sending me a full set of replacement strings (not just the damaged D-string). They also responded to a separate query where I asked for a hardshell case recommendation to fit the larger lower bout of this instrument's body -- they did not have a recommendation. Added back the one star (back to the original 5-star rating) due to the good customer support response.

I stopped playing guitar because of arthritis so I thought maybe I could still play four strings of a baritone uke. I bought a cheap one to try it. I liked it. Then i wanted a better sounding one and bought the Caramel (still not expensive). The instrument is beautifully made, and its sound out of the box was smooth, elegant, soft and rich. But wait, there’s more. This instrument can be amplified. It has an input and comes with a cable to connect. Well, i just tried using headphones, not amped. The sound, using the equalizer it comes with, made the sound utterly exquisite to my ears. Bravo and so much thanks to the Caramel people for giving me a new lease on playing music. Buy without reservation.

I’ve been playing ukulele (as well as guitar, bass and piano) for years and have collected eight ukuleles of all different kinds, at all different moderate price points, and sold under all different brands. I bought this Caramel ukulele after considering it for several months—not really sure if I wanted to fool with a baritone. It’s the first time I’ve played one. It arrived mid-morning today and now it’s nightfall and I’ve barely set it down. I’m just delighted. I know I know I know: This endless collecting of new instruments. And I have really liked every single one, but I have to say, this gorgeous Caramel is a banger. I think I like it even better than my tenor Kala 8-string which is also beautiful and dreamy. This Caramel baritone is very good looking with a full rich resonance and sustain. It is comfortable and natural in the hands and is very fun and easy to play. Frankly, it is so comfortable and natural in the hands that I’ve barely even noticed the size difference. I am a solid upper-intermediate player and almost all of my playing is fingerstyle. It handles this nicely and sounds crisp and full. While the strings are still settling in, it has needed minimal upkeep tuning. I think it’s a rock solid ukulele. With all the instruments I have, I didn't own an electric baritone uke. Shipping was fast and the instrument arrived without damage. I prefer a cedar top for tone, but this instrument did quite well. I have built instruments of Bocote and love its beautiful figure and warm tones. I am happy that the tone-wood is not a laminate. Plugged into the amp it did very well and I have been happy with the purchase.

This is a great baritone ukulele for the price, beautifully glossy butterfly bocote finish and rich sound. Normal capo works with it to tune up or down so it is like having five ukuleles and a guitar in one instrument. The tuner is on point, only slight adjustments needed straight out of the box. Very comfortable feel with or without the strap. A nice case and accessories are included. 10 out of 10 highly recommend.

I bought this for my wife but I like it as much as my more expensive baritone ukulele. It has a wonderful tone. I used to have another Caramel ukulele and liked it so we bought this one. Plays great but have yet to try it plugged into a amp. The built in tuner works well.

This is indeed a beautiful instrument! I did have a minor issue initially, it was not holding tune. This was quickly remedied as the truss rod was completely relaxed and it needed about a half a turn on the adjustment rod to put some tension on the neck. Plays and sounds awesome! Would definitely buy again. This was a very simple fix, don’t attempt it if you don’t understand it. Let someone who does do for you.
