  • Not Good
Style: Printer Only
I'm a photographer and a Canon guy these days. Back in the 80's and 90's all Nikon/Pentax, but come the digital age Canon. 3 Canon DSLR's and lots of red ring lenses. Large format Canon printer for photography and art. While I used lasers for when I was printing lots of collateral, I've had a little inkjet all-in-one for home use. So, when my junky little HP inkjet died, I figured I'd just grab a Canon and life would be good. Not so fast. Ok, Canon have always been a bit challenged when it comes to UI (save their cameras), but this one is spectacularly bad. It's a constant struggle to scan a document and switch between file formats/resolutions. Yes, you can name and save these, but that part is easier said than done. Part of the issue stems from the fact it's not a touch screen, which even my sad little HP officejet was. Then, there's the inconsistencies in which buttons perform which operation as you try to navigate options and settings. Spectacularly horrific. You can expect loads of frustration as it beeps at you when you press "OK" and it refuses to do anything. Setup was fairly straightforward, but I've done a lot of this sort of thing so I knew the correct steps to begin with. I'd say when it comes to this, the HP and Epson are a lot more clear to the average user, and have far better setup CD's to get your wireless devices talking to each other. I'd give this a 6/10. The print quality (letters) is decent, although I've not tried photo quality so I can't comment there. What is really disconcerting however is the time to get a first page. Half the time - perhaps more - the printer seems to go into some sort of self-check when I start printing. It's just a PDF shipping label! But seriously, it can take well over 2 minutes. 1 crummy page with a box and a barcode, or a simple word doc. It can do this literally 10 minutes after printing another document. It doesn't seem to be a cleaning mode, it just whirs and clicks as the screen has a mild seizure. I simply can't imagine using this for a regular SOHO environment. Copies are atrocious. Just wow bad. The HP looked pretty darned decent compared to originals, picking up the halftones and spitting out clean copies. This thing looks like an old Xerox machine by comparison. Embarrassing. You do NOT want this machine if you're handing out copies and want to look good. If you're a nonprofit looking for handouts on the other hand... The scan quality is the worst I've had in years, and several rungs down from the HP. I frequently scan floorplans I've done on a grid form, and even at high settings, the grid is all but invisible. If scanning quality is remotely important, keep looking. Faxing has been pretty straightforward in both receiving and sending, but this has become increasingly rare for me so I can't give you much more advice on this aspect. Pros - easy-ish to network - turns on and off Cons - lousy setup software - horrific UI - no touch screen - terrible scans - can take minutes for 1 B&W text page - goes to sleep about 5% of the time - nasty copies If you're the sort who sits down with the manual, and setup every single scenerio for copying/printing/scanning you'll need, this might do it for you. I've been using printers for almost 40 years now, owned a service bureau for the better part of a decade, and have dealt with every type of analog/digital printer from every brand there is. I've never had anything quite like this. I'm seriously considering dumping this when time comes for a new set of carts. I'm just looking at an additional $25-50 for a new printer. Just as an aside, my HP problems weren't just the printer dying, but bad quality cartridges that leaked. Another reason I got the Canon. HP notoriously pitches a fit if you use third party carts. 3rd party manufacturers are always playing catch up to the latest HP updates. I did try another ink brand, but the particular brand I got was awful and the cyan cart in particular. My old Brother color laser printer got the heave-ho because their toner cartridges were leaking powder everywhere! Seems if these companies are going to charge extortionate prices for their consumables, they could at least be of decent build quality. In the latter case, I think it's because they recycle the carts (you're supposed to mail them in once spent). I'll probably give Epson a shot next time around, unless there's an HP on sale. 2 stars, barely passable for what it is. I certainly cannot recommend it. ... show more

  • Delightfully fast with modest frills for the OFFICE

Apr 3, 2020, this review must be updated Sep 23, 2021 and demoted ONE STAR since Canon will solve this problem nor replace the machine: We are trying to solve this mystery on our Canon MB2120 ... past Canon multi-faxes worked JUST FINE! i.e. Hello phone caller, chat for awhile then everything goes SILENT, sometimes the caller hears a FAX tone but not us. UGH Happened with both cable & phone line services, so no suspects there. We are having to UNPLUG the machine (we now call HAL ala in the space movie) when conversations are hijacked into silence. Previous review: LOVE CANON after being abused by HP for years, also insulted with their 10-ft-pole support that often was ZERO = see your dealer (good luck, most are only in larger cities). Loved my MX860 for TEN years but when time's up, time's up ... even though some time consuming repairs might put crutches under it. Beginning to warm up to this new one, certainly the eBay sales of the ink in storage for the former AIOF (all-in-one w/fax) MORE than paid for this new one, then free Prime came fast. PROS FASTER WOW so much speed, even printing both sides About as QUIET as the former one (ignore reviews saying noisy, this soon goes away after setup and into a routine) PIGMENT ink soooo much better than dye Paper tray much less hassle & holds x2.5 more = less babysitting; various paper sizes accommodated JAMBS = none, as per the aging former one SETUP idiot proof and not much tweaking required, not even the FAX sharing T.A.D. line (the the aging former one was interrupting sometimes during a conversation) Win 8.1 is my OS NOT SURE, time will tell INK seems about same price, with eBay discount encounters ALL printers/plotters seem to eat ink ($$$) when cleaning and most high grade inks soon cost more than the printer! The less you use it and the drier/hotter its nest is ... the more cleaning required; never let direct sunlight exacerbate all that. This one doesn't seem to do that waste. CONS -1 STAR Second paper feed/tray NONE (but have been working around this) 4x36" paper strips don't seem to be accommodated (these come from Canon ipf700 plotter each time it boots up, so need to be employed again) Bought April, now end of June, even with money saving XL cartridges INKS COSTING ME $93 PER MONTH OUCH but THEREAFTER ink consumption leveled off and now my constant purchases to feed it have created quite a surplus. BOTTOM LINE INK: BIG investment for 2 months, then slowly begins to become NORMAL consumption thereafter (experience over 13 months) FAX Power outages & other disturbances can "un-tame" the FAX a) will answer the phone before you or T.A.D. device can b) will answer the phone while you are taking a call = caller gets FAX squeal tone and no one can hear the other, so hang up Done the rest, CANON is the best (but difficult to shop - there's NO database that allows you to select features until the weed-out process presents only a few. Often the specs presented will never allow apples to apples figures to compare.) ... show more

  • Good printer Bad instructions
Style: Printer Only
I’m happy with the MB2120 itself . It was easy to unpack and set up. The WI-FI setup instructions you can throw away. Cannon provides a link address for more info - useless. I printed from my iPhone just after setup and now that doesn’t work. Guess I’ll spend some YouTube time on that.

  • No 2-sided copy or scan
Style: Printer Only
I purchased this machine because of the claim (by a Canon representative in the FAQ section) that it had 2-sided copy and scan capability. Perhaps not technically a lie, but certainly misleading - it has the capability if you want to stand there turning pages over repeatedly but not using the ADF. I was able to get some 1-to-2 sided functionality by using the ADF to scan in 1-sided items (it doesn't scan 2 sides) to my computer and then make a 2-sided print. This is a heck of a lot more manual work than I expected. The MAXIFY support line does get answered quickly and the representative was honest about the reason I couldn't figure out how to activate functionality the machine apparently lacks. Copy quality is fine. The low value rating is because I paid much less for my previous machine that did have this functionality. I'm now debating whether this is worth keeping and reviewing my alternatives. Even if I end up keeping it, however, it will be with a lingering sense of distrust and betrayal due to the misinformation that induced my purchase. ... show more
