Native to East Asia the Chinese Elm is one of the most popular bonsai trees, especially among beginners. These lovely semi-evergreen trees can grow up to 65 feet tall in their native habitat, but have been cultivated in miniature form for Bonsai for generations. It is an ideal choice for those just starting out because it is slow-growing and tolerant, the Chinese Elm allows beginners plenty of time and forgiveness to grow accustomed to bonsai care making it one of the most loved and most undemanding of miniature trees. These tiny trees feature beautiful, distinctive dark gray to reddish brown bark that turns fissure and corky when mature. Got here safe and sound. Looks like the pictures, looks very healthy. Very cute little tree. Couldn't be happier. NOTE: As others have stated, I did see some small bugs/afids on it. The soil doesn't smell bad or off, so I am hoping it doesn't become an issue. Will keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn't get infested. I think a small cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and Dawn soap sitting next to it should deal with that issue if it gets any worse. I did add the white container underneath the green pot it came in so it doesn't drain onto my shelf when watering. ... show more

I got this about a month and a half ago. About four days after I received it, the leaves started getting dry and crispy since I am attempting to swap this tree to an indoor plant. This happened while I was still learning about the art, so i didn't realized i was under watering as well as leaving the tree right up next to a window all day long. So leaves started falling off, so i completely defoliated it. About two weeks after there was tons of new growth and now the tree is just overgrown in such a short time. I live in TN where winters are super iffy, so I wanted it to be an indoor plant for decorative and climate reasons. So far its doing great and I can't wait to repot and prune. The pot is kinda small but i plan on swapping it when I repot. But overall the tree looks great, mine personally looks a lot better than the picture, the trunks not as bent but more twisted. Highly recommend, everyone who sees it wants to go buy one themselves. Great product. ... show more

(1 star for surviving the delivery apocalypse) Let me start by saying: I’ve never felt such a complex emotional bond with a plant. When my bonsai arrived, the box looked like it had survived a WWE cage match with a forklift. I opened it expecting either enlightenment or an angry squirrel. Instead, I found what can only be described as a tiny haunted forest spirit who’s seen too much. The leaves, which were supposed to be lush and green, are instead a delightful shade of existential brown. They crunch when you breathe near them — not from freshness, but from despair. I gently tried to prune one and it disintegrated in my hand like Thanos had just snapped. The pot? Oh, the pot. It’s not just uneven — it leans like it’s trying to escape the entire situation. It wobbles dramatically, as if to say, “Why are any of us even here?” When I tried to water the tree, all the water flowed to one side and promptly flooded the table, which, I must admit, was the most action this bonsai has seen in weeks. The instructions said “Place in indirect sunlight,” but I think what it really needed was an exorcism and maybe a motivational speech. In conclusion, I bought this bonsai to bring serenity into my life. Instead, I got a small, crispy reminder of life’s fleeting nature and a pot that moonlights as a seesaw. Would I recommend it? Only if you enjoy chaos, irony, and plants that look like they just came back from a bad vacation in Mordor. Namaste, I guess. ... show more

I've never gone out of my way to write an Amazon review because I've never really bought anything either bad or good enough to warrant me wanting to do so. But I bought a chinese elm from Brussels and I have to say, I was amazed at what an awesome, beautiful tree I received. First of all, it came the exact day they said it would. It was packaged very well. The pot was very well wrapped and the soil was still very moist. Everything was in tact. No broken branches, no broken, or cracked pot, not even any soil spilled. The tree came in a very nice, beautiful pot. Perfect for the trees age/size. The pot was well filled with a very good, high quality mix of organic and inorganic soil. It drains very very well, while still maintaining just enough moisture for a couple days. The tree itself that I got is incredible. This was my first time ordering a tree online and honestly I didn't have the highest hopes or expectations. I figured anyone selling trees on Amazon probably doesn't have the time to maintain these things much further than just watering them and keeping them alive. No, Brussels sent me a very beautifully styled tree. There is so much great movement in the trunk and all the branches. I was blown away. There wasn't a single dead or dying leaf on the tree. The leaves are incredibly small, beautiful foliage and half the foliage on it was fresh green new growth coming in. I read a couple reviews of people saying they got there tree with the branches "all chopped up". I got a tree the was very recently pruned and trimmed. To perfection. The guy saying he got a tree that was all chopped up probably doesn't know d*ck about bonsai. It's like uh yeah buddy, at some point you have to prune and trim these trees. Well you have to a lot actually! And Brussels did a really fine job trimming and pruning mine before they sent it out. My only, only qualm would be there's a few spots with very slight wire scaring. Which honestly to me isn't that big of a deal. They are hardly noticeable unless you're really looking for it. Especially considering they are mass producing these and selling them online! If you don't want any wire scaring I'd say grow your own perfect tree for 7 or 8 years, lol. Still five stars from me hands down. Like I said, I was extremely nervous to by a tree online. But I'm definitely going to be buying more trees from them this coming spring. ... show more

This would be 4.5 stars if I had the option. The shipping protected the plant and pot very well - the soil was even still wet. The plant itself was fairly well-trained for something so inexpensive (some slightly ugly cuts IMO but nothing egregious). The soil itself was of better than average quality and drains/retains water about as well as the bonsai soil I currently use. The roots were well-trimmed and seem quite healthy - I was concerned on ordering that the plant might be root-bound but there is actually a good amount of room to grow. The plant's foliage was healthy, thick and dense - no legginess or overlarge leaves with plenty of new growth. I chose the Cinese Elm as it is a subtropical plant and I currently live in an area where overwintering is impossible due to the climate - my hope is that it will survive several years indoors without dormancy before I can move to a more temperate area. The pot itself is not my favorite style (I prefer matte to glaze finish) but is of a decent size and looks nice enough that I won't prioritize replacing it. It does not come with a drainage tray. I did deduct one half star as the grower had failed to remove a wire when training which ended up leaving a fairly deep groove in the trunk and one branch as the plant grew around it. Overall I had expected significant work would be necessary shortly after the plant's arrival to ensure a healthy and long-lived plant, but it seems that this grower knows their bonsai care. They delivered a healthy, trained, and rather appealing plant in great condition. I'm very happy with this purchase and its price. ... show more
