Native to East Asia the Chinese Elm is one of the most popular bonsai trees, especially among beginners. These lovely semi-evergreen trees can grow up to 65 feet tall in their native habitat, but have been cultivated in miniature form for Bonsai for generations. It is an ideal choice for those just starting out because it is slow-growing and tolerant, the Chinese Elm allows beginners plenty of time and forgiveness to grow accustomed to bonsai care making it one of the most loved and most undemanding of miniature trees. These tiny trees feature beautiful, distinctive dark gray to reddish brown bark that turns fissure and corky when mature. I've never gone out of my way to write an Amazon review because I've never really bought anything either bad or good enough to warrant me wanting to do so. But I bought a chinese elm from Brussels and I have to say, I was amazed at what an awesome, beautiful tree I received. First of all, it came the exact day they said it would. It was packaged very well. The pot was very well wrapped and the soil was still very moist. Everything was in tact. No broken branches, no broken, or cracked pot, not even any soil spilled. The tree came in a very nice, beautiful pot. Perfect for the trees age/size. The pot was well filled with a very good, high quality mix of organic and inorganic soil. It drains very very well, while still maintaining just enough moisture for a couple days. The tree itself that I got is incredible. This was my first time ordering a tree online and honestly I didn't have the highest hopes or expectations. I figured anyone selling trees on Amazon probably doesn't have the time to maintain these things much further than just watering them and keeping them alive. No, Brussels sent me a very beautifully styled tree. There is so much great movement in the trunk and all the branches. I was blown away. There wasn't a single dead or dying leaf on the tree. The leaves are incredibly small, beautiful foliage and half the foliage on it was fresh green new growth coming in. I read a couple reviews of people saying they got there tree with the branches "all chopped up". I got a tree the was very recently pruned and trimmed. To perfection. The guy saying he got a tree that was all chopped up probably doesn't know d*ck about bonsai. It's like uh yeah buddy, at some point you have to prune and trim these trees. Well you have to a lot actually! And Brussels did a really fine job trimming and pruning mine before they sent it out. My only, only qualm would be there's a few spots with very slight wire scaring. Which honestly to me isn't that big of a deal. They are hardly noticeable unless you're really looking for it. Especially considering they are mass producing these and selling them online! If you don't want any wire scaring I'd say grow your own perfect tree for 7 or 8 years, lol. Still five stars from me hands down. Like I said, I was extremely nervous to by a tree online. But I'm definitely going to be buying more trees from them this coming spring. ... show more

I'm pretty disappointed in the instructions that came with this tree. It recommended that the tree had to stay outside except for 2 or 3 days a month and I had read that these trees were great indoor bonsai. The instructions said it needed to go dormant from the cold as part of its cycle so I placed in in a south facing window in my garage. I live in central Ohio and the winter got very cold but I had a temperature gauge next to the tree in the window and it never got below 29 degrees. Within days the leaves started dropping and soon it was bare. I thought that was part of the dormancy process. I made sure the soil never got dry either. Anyway, I believe the instructions killed this beautiful 10 year old tree. If it does recover, I think it will be a miracle. I wish I had kept it indoors. Do a lot of research on this kind of tree before you buy it please. It was beautiful when it arrived, by the way. ... show more

Bought it because I love Bonsai trees! Said it was easy to care for. I guess it is but I have had a bit of trouble as you definitely need to water it EVERY DAY let they say!! Got COVID-19 and was down for a week and it didn't fair well with me ignoring it. I also wasn't let it have enough light so relocated it and am watering it every day as needed. It is responding well as I would have hated to lose it because of neglect. The tree does need to be fed due to the small pot it is in. If you can't find bonsai tree food you can use Azalea plant food as it closely matches what the tree needs for food. That you can find in almost any garden shop if you just look. Brussel's sent the tree well packaged (large box with foam peanuts for protection) and it arrived in great condition just as they described! Got to give them credit as I am sure shipping something like this is a huge pain in the you know what to ship! I do trust them when they say what you will get and the condition it is in. This arrived okay but I had some problems getting it established in its new home. When I asked for help and reported that it seemed to be dying, the only help I received was a demand for my purchase information - like numbers and tags that had long since hit the trash can. So I've been struggling with this little buddy for a long time, and I'm not sure he's going to make it. I'm a novice. I tried something new. I am disappointed with the lack of information and support available for this plant. It wasn't just a cheap purchase. :/Looked just like the photo when it arrived. I gave it an easy to grow 4 star because I've only had it a few days. About 4 little leaves started to turn yellow once I got it unpacked and placed outside. I watered it generously and it seemed to spring back to life. So far so good. The tree arrived healthy and the container is suitable to let it thrive in for a few weeks while the tree gets used to its new surroundings.
