Description

Based in Olive Branch, Mississippi, Brussel's Bonsai has cultivated live bonsai trees for over 50 years. Originating in the dry regions of South Africa, The Dwarf Jade, or ‘Elephant bush’, is a succulent plant, which explains its ability to store water for a long time. It is a very undemanding plant, well suited for individuals who travel often or who are prone to forget to water their plants. Thick, round, dark green leaves sit atop fleshy stems & branches, beautifully contrasting against the thick upright trunk. Though jade plants can grow to heights of 10 feet tall in their native habitat, it is an ideal bonsai for a beginner; This beautiful plant is easy to care for and will be a thing of beauty for years to come. I have had poor results in the past with bonsai but I really wanted to give it another try so I ordered this one and it has so far survived for 3 months and looks great. I keep it on my patio table which is covered but the plant receives sufficient light and moisture from the air so I don’t need to water it frequently. The bonsai was exceptionally well packaged and no damage was visible with the exception of a few dropped leaves during transit but the plant itself was very healthy and the leaves were plump and glossy. The ceramic planter that is included is very nice, mine is a blueish teal color that looks great against the plant. I added glass pebbles to the side compartment instead of water and it worked well.     • Thrips Infestation!

My bonsai seemed fine for about a week, and then it started dropping leaves, just like all the others'. Unlike everyone else who's posted here, I found out why. I watered and inspected the tree and found little (.5mm) silver mites running around in the soil-- lots of them. I did a lot of research and then eventually took it to a local nursery where they said and my bonsai came with a nice little infestation of thrips palmi. Thrips are a common glasshouse and factory nursery infestation that attack the roots of young plants. To an adult plant, thrips themselves do minimal damage even in large numbers but can stunt or warp growth by feeding on terminal shoots, the undersides of leaves, causing them to drop. Each of my dropped jade leaves had a small brown spot at the base where thrips had been feeding. The real danger from thrips is that they carry Watermelon silver mottle virus that makes your leaves turn silver and shrivel up. The reason the leaves start dropping is that thrips love the warm dry air of a house or apartment and the parasite population explodes when you house the plant indoors as advertised. Anyway, in summary, they mention they are the biggest US distributor of bonsai, and I believe them, 'cause my bonsai has the parasites to prove it! DO NOT BUY! ... show more

The Bonsai tree arrived a day early and was carefully packaged as you can see from the pictures. Only a few leaves had dropped from the tree. I have now had it exactly two weeks and it has retained its leaves and looks beautiful. There wasn't much green moss on it so I bought some and put it on the soil. I plan to buy some small oriental fishermen to set on it with their pole in the water. I live in Florida so there is plenty of sun, but I don't have a space where I can put it where it will receive the direct sun inside. I have it on my kitchen counter and it gets supplemental light from my undercabinet LEDs. So far it seems happy enough with that. The first 3 pictures are the unboxing of the new plant. Number 4 is the tree fully un boxed. Numbers 5 & 6 are pictures of it two weeks later. I am very pleased with my purchase. ... show more

I liked the plant that was sent but noticed that there was a hairline crack in the vase ( the pond). I noticed this as the water level kept lowering within a few hours of filling up. On approaching the seller, I was told that the sale was done through Amazon and they could not replace it after 30 days. I would advise buyers to look very closely if the vase is fractured. Just knocking on the pond area should indicate that there is a crack. Still love the plant, its doing well. ... show more

Great plant for those who have the desire to have a bonsai tree. Sadly mine came pretty much dead, but I will look into buying another from this company. It is beautiful and looks great in your house. A must buy for those interested in this type of plant.

    • Looks good, not great

This is my first bonsai. I will try to update this review periodically with more information. The plant arrived in good condition and well watered. Mine does not look like the picture. It is definitely a lot more sparse and less "natural" looking. I'm hoping that some pruning will fix that over time. It also lost a few leaves on the first day, but seems to have really come alive after being watered and given sunlight. I'm sure 3 days in a box can't be too healthy for it. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are two holes at the bottom of the pot, so you'll need to figure out a way to deal with the water which leaks out. Update 9/23/2008: I would bump this review up to 4 stars, but Amazon won't let me. The plant still hasn't filled out much more and still does not look as good as the picture, but it has remained remarkably healthy with very little effort. I've kept it at my desk at work where it receives little if any sunlight. Watering it twice a week and occasionally moving it near a window for a weekend has kept it very healthy and green.
