This printer replaced a very large multifunction printer whose printhead failed after some 6 years of use. The Brother printer was very easy to install and place in service. The front panel is flexible so placement is not an issue. Better yet the printer's relatively small footprint allows plenty of flexibility. One issue is a bit annoying for users that would like to connect their printer to a desktop. The unit does not come with a direct connect USB cable. Rather we are asked to supply a cable then internally connect it by routing through the printers top cover. Not difficult but certainly a pain. Otherwise the printer works extremely well as a free standing wifi printer, scanner and fax device. Printing of documents and graphics in draft mode is reasonable whereas the speed of fine or high quality mode reproduction is much slower. The remote scan function which we use frequently works very well. After a couple of months of heavy use including production of holiday greeting cards we're still using the original color ink cartridges. The black cartridge was the first to go and we decided to replace it with the XL version. No data yet as to rate of consumption. All in all a pretty robust little printer for home and perhaps small business use. ... show more

    • Really great all-around office tool
I bought this so I could work from home, and it's a great product. It's very compact and fits neatly on my desk. With the wifi connection I was able to cut down on the number of wires I needed running across my already crowded workspace, and I could theoretically set it up anywhere is my home where it would be more out of my way. It has faithfully scanned everything from exams to resumes and printed out hundreds of pages of paper at this point with little issue. As far as I can remember it hasn't jammed yet. ... show more

    • a little slow.
I had a hard time with wifi but to be honest that could be our set up. I used the cable so that problem worked itself out. I have 4 Brother printers and this one is literally twice as slow as my slowest one of the others. For the price, I couldn't complain, but I can't give it 5 stars either.

    • Love Brother printers
This is my second Brother MFC printer. I was very satisfied with the J480Dw and now this one J497dw. The J480Dw was easier to set up. I had to work harder to get this printer to connect to the Wifi. I figured out if you connect to Wifi by going through the settings on the actual printer, it connects just fine. It does not want to find the Wifi going through the driver disk. However, after connecting to Wifi on the printer, then the print driver works just fine. It does take about 30 minutes to get it set up. After that, the printer is great. Photo quality is good for everyday use, but falls short if you need professional prints. I highly recommend this printer. It is easy to use and works great. One thing about printing from smart phones, tablets, etc., it may be necessary to go through the set up app in order to prepare your phone to print to the brother printer. That makes it a little more difficult to print from phones etc., but it is workable. ... show more

    • Excellent buy for personal home use.
I use this printer for personal home use - nothing heavy duty. At first it kept jamming when I would try to print double-sided copies but now it has settled in and works fine. Once in awhile when I try to print a receipt from my email it doesn't print the whole receipt but that may not be a printer problem. I need to call tech support about it. Overall I am very satisfied with this model that was recommended by Consumer Reports. ... show more

So far this printer has exceeded my expectations. For years I only purchased Canon products. This printer was fairly easy to setup (I am not tech savvy). There are various options that I have not used. It prints my documents quite fast and the quality is great. It is a little smaller than my previous printer and quite nice looking. One morning I was working on my computer and my printer was on. All of a sudden my printer started making a sound. I was not printing any documents and the sound startled me. It has a self-cleaning option. How great is that! I think most folks will be pleased with this printer. I will probably do another review after I have used it for a while. ... show more

    • Often loses connection but could be my computer
I love How fast it prints, but it seems to lose connection a lot through the cord, even though I've tried two different ones. Works better through the Wi-Fi but you have to connect to the printer and get off the internet to do it. I'm sure there's probably some other way to get it to work or some fix to use with it. But it's for a work computer and I hate having to call IT to get them to install it and uninstall it again. Overall I'd buy the printer again I'm sure it would work fine on a regular computer ... show more

I ordered this printer to replace one that had finally given out on me. I'm still in the learning stage with this machine, but believe that it will do what I wish it to. It's just different from the printer to which I'd become used over the past seven or eight years, perhaps more. It's smaller than my old HP, which is good, but still provided printouts of every necessary size and has more bells & whistles than the former printer and hence a little more testing to see what's what. ... show more
