  • A sturdy little workhorse **UPDATE 1 year later, still loving it**
Style: HL-L2320D
I have printed over 5,000 pages (3,700 over a 2 day period) on this bad boy so far, using both OEM ink and the substantially cheaper re-manufactured and off brand ink. I realize that publicly admitting to using non OEM ink voids my warranty, and I am fine with that. It is a good printer, and people should know that it handles the re-manufactured ink like a champ. I have used Toner Jockey and Ink E-Sale, which both work perfectly in this printer and perform about the same. I have had to clean the print head many times in order to keep my prints clean, but that is something that you should do regularly to maintain your printer anyways. I do have to clean it a bit more frequently when using ink other than the OEM, but that is worth it to me for the dramatically lower cost per cartridge. I love the double sided print option, it works very well. I have only had one jam so far, and I have been putting this printer through the paces. I have not had any issues with the printer at all. I will update my review when this printer dies or I have issues with it. FYI- it does NOT come with a USB cable. I just used the one from my old printer and it was no big deal to me. I always keep the cords and cables from electronics when they die, for just this very reason. I am in the Vine Voice program, but I bought this printer with my own money in order to review toner cartridges that were offered for "free" (there's taxes) to review. **UPDATE** I have been using this printer for a year, and I love it as much as I did at the beginning. I have run several different brands of re-manufactured ink through it and have not had any issues aside from needing to clean the print heads frequently. I've had two jams in the entire life of the printer, and they were easy to clear. 5 stars ... show more

  • Great quality, quick and pretty quiet, great with linux
Style: HL-L2320D
I run a linux server at home for various reasons, and wanted to replace my old Samsung laser printer with something new that still worked well with Linux. I searched around trying to find something that wouldn't be a nightmare to set up and I settled on this one. I'm happy to say that this was a breeze to set up under Linux and I've been using it without issue since. I'm printing to it from my laptops, tablets, and phones, through the linux machine it's attached to. As far as the printer itself, the print quality is great, it's super quick and relatively quiet as far as home laser printers go. I haven't used it long enough to have an opinion on toner life, but assuming it's decent, I'm very happy with it so far. If you've got a linux machine, server or workstation, and are looking for a good home laser printer, I have no reason not to recommend this to you. It's a great price, easy to deal with Linux, and I'm quite happy with the print quality. Thumbs up. ... show more

  • Why so darn hard to turn off?
Style: HL-L2320D
I like the printer fine. The print quality is great and I got a year and a half out of the supplied cartridge with light use. But why did they make the thing so hard to turn off? It has two modes: Take a long time to turn off or don't turn off at all. Listen folks, I'm an easy customer to please. But when I turn an appliance off, I want it to turn off like now or in the very near future. ... show more

  • disposable workhorse
Style: HL-L2320D
We have been using these for many years. We buy toner to refill them and spare drums as well. They last for a long time, yet you don't feel bad when they reach end of life because they weren't that expensive. The toner light is a PITA but go into the internet and learn how to override it....very easy.... ... show more

  • Sudden Default Lockups Cynically Forced to Artificailly Obsolete Good Toner Cartridges
Style: HL-L2320D
This HL-L2320D printer would deserve 5 stars before toner problems, because it produces clear copies as a background tool without requiring costly attention. With only wired connection, it presents none of the security risks of network degradation due to unwanted interactions with the internet. However, it clearly rates one star or less because of the unnecessary sudden lockup whenever IT decides it wants to force you to buy new toner at a bloated price. After nine months of very light use (probably a few hundred pages at most), the toner light briefly flickered at the start of a printout, then went out as the printout proceeded. The last page of the contract form I was to sign refused to print out because of a sudden deliberate lockup. The toner light had turned on with no warning. Print quality was perfect on the first four pages, so I desperately wanted the last page to sign. Brother purposely blocks this to send partially-used toner cartridges (usually) to the landfill in order to force customers to buy costly new cartridges frequently. There are elaborate procedures that can be found on the internet to temporarily bypass this. Some work and some don't, since the lockup has been extended to be triggered by causes totally unrelated to low remaining toner. On their website, Brother says they now trigger the lockup on their products if their indirect indication of dirty printer wires indicates future discolorations on the printout could alert the owner to clean them. Or if they fail to detect their own cartridge, which they often do on brand new "official" cartridges. Or if a known good cartridge is moved from another machine to debug the problem. In other words, Brother is purposely triggering this lockup by an increasing number of indirect erratic measurements to force buyers to replace perfectly good cartridges as the very first step reacting to any minor maintenance problem. I lost two days of my time on this artificial problem, and had an understanding contractor personally come to have me sign his copy of the contract. All of this was a waste of valuable time contributing to an unnecessary degradation of the environment because of wasted toner. All because of a cynical Brother marketing scheme to steadily accelerate planned obsolescence. It is possible for those of us with the ability to work around the problem, at a cost far exceeding the cost of a printer. However, no one should buy one of these Brother printers unless they are confident of their ability to repeatedly set the cynical lockout to "continue" internally instead of the insistently default "stop". ... show more
