  • good design, auto tamping is a winner
Color: Black Truffle
I'm new to espresso making (coming from bean-to-cup superautomatics), and currently have this Breville unit and a much lesser-featured Delonghi ECP. I went with this Barista Express Impress model over the Touch Impress because it's about half the price (comparing prices of lightly-used units), and is more reliable according to user reports. I also considered the Delonghi Specialista Opera, but was turned off by fewer grind settings and needing to take apart the whole machine to clean or service the burrs. general - the unit is well designed, especially the automatic tamping (quick, consistent, and no mess), Razor tool, large drip tray with bottom storage, easy-remove hopper, and ability to refill water from the top without removing the reservoir. The grinder is good, has a wide range and decent granularity (1 notch might correspond to 3 seconds extraction time), is easy to clean and service, and I had no problem getting the extra-fine grind needed for decaf beans. I like having the analog pressure gauge. auto dosing and dose indicator - Especially with decaf beans, it's no good to have them sitting in the hopper overnight, so I went with an aftermarket single-dose replacement hopper that I'm happy with. I grind by weight rather than using the auto-dose feature. I do rely on the dose level indicator to confirm the result of my grind size and measured beans. It has passable accuracy– e.g. even with a "good" level, expect that checking with the Razor tool might remove some grounds. steamer - I won't repeat what's written elsewhere. This is a real steam wand so you need proper technique. Being somewhat low-volume is actually an advantage as it affords more time to work when learning. I wish the wand offered hot water output for easy cleanup. It's likely my poor technique, but milk tends to get sucked up and congeal within the wand tube, and steam purges don't expel it. model color - Be aware that the painted models use a matte, thin layer of paint that easily scratches. Any scratches will especially be noticeable on the darker colors since it's stainless steel underneath. If I chose again, I'd pick stainless steel or white. buying used (doesn't impact my rating) - I purchased a "used - acceptable" that appears refurbished. All parts, manuals, and packaging were included, and the main basket and accessories appeared new. The machine looked new except for some scratches on the edges, and a chip on the base of the plastic hopper. There was only a faint trace of coffee grounds inside. No steam would come out of the wand, however. Not only was the tip clogged, but the wand tube was blocked by 1.5" of congealed milk. Easily fixed, and overall a good trade for the discount. annoyances * no low-water indicator - when out of water, the machine will just not extract or steam (even stopping mid-extraction), and for a moment you'll think it's broken. This happens exactly at the marked "min" level of the reservoir, which is a fairly large volume of water that can't be used. * the mound of ground coffee isn't automatically leveled before tamping– work around this by giving the portafilter a violent wiggle after grinding * pre-infusion time can't be programmed, only controllable on manual shots fanciful wishes * in line with recent thinking that deeper pucks make better coffee, I wish that Breville used 51mm baskets like Delonghi * though unloved, pressurized baskets have their valid uses, and I wish that someone would make easy-clean dual-walled baskets for 54mm (like Delonghi's 51mm baskets) Overall, this machine is a keeper due to the neatness of the integrated grinder and automatic tamping, good quality build and design, and expected reliability (being analog and without a screen or extra computers to break). ... show more

  • Happily Impressed!
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Bought this on Prime Day at a great price. Always been a Breville brand fan. I have several of their appliances and (almost) no complaints, other than an expensive (but functionally impressive) toaster that died after 2 years. I’m replacing a Nespresso machine that I’ve used daily for over 6 years. For the last few months, I think I’ve watched every YouTube video made about setting this model up, using and cleaning it. Breville also has videos about the machine. They are informative but irritatingly corny. I spent the day it showed up reading the manuals, re-watching some videos, packing away my Nespresso machine, inventorying the Breville and setting it up. I also ordered Lavazza coffee beens from Amazon just to get started. The first day, took several presses of the “dose” button to get my green okay light. I thought it was supposed to remember the correct dosage for the same beans but the 2nd day, it over-filled the portafilter. That gave me a chance to test the “razor” and it was simple to use. Since then the dosage has been perfect on the first try. Something I learned from the Breville videos is that start to finish, the extraction should take about 30 seconds or you need to adjust the grind. I used my iPhone to time that. 1st day was about 20 seconds, but the expresso still tasted way better than my Nespresso shots, so I just went with that and adjusted the grind by a couple of clicks (making it finer). Next day, the extraction took 25 seconds, so I adjusted the grind again by a couple of clicks. Extraction took 30 seconds and had a great crema. I should mention that I always used 2 shots on my Nespresso machine and about 10-12 ounces of unsweetened almond milk to make a latte. I also used probably 10 packets of Stevia in the Raw to get past the bitter taste. Over the years, I’ve tried most of the Nespresso original coffees and my favorites are the Italian ones. With the Lavazza coffee (also 2 shots) and my new Breville, I’ve cut that back to 4 packets and it’s perfect. Something else I noticed is that the the Lavazza is not very bitter (I just like my latte on the sweeter side) but I noticed a lot of nuance in the taste of my expresso shot. I’m not an expresso expert, so I don’t know the correct terms. But the latte tasted very, very fresh, light with just a hint of bitterness. I haven’t used the steaming wand and I’m not in any hurry to learn that. I’ve always put my almond milk in the microwave for about 90 seconds (with the Stevia in it) and used a $15 frother wand to whip it up. Then I pour that into the expresso. I don’t do art. I have the Nespresso frother and some 3rd party one I bought. They don’t do any better than the wand and are more work to clean up. I also only drink lattes or cappuccinos (when I over-froth!) and am actually not a coffee drinker. I drink tea the rest of the day. My criteria for upgrading machines were 1) improved taste in my lattes, 2) same ease of use as the Nespresso and 3) same or lower costs to make my lattes. I probably spend $50/month on Nespresso coffee and it looks like I can spend $10-$20 on the Lavazza or close to that amount if I want to try some local brewers (and I will). The Breville machine is (when on sale) twice the cost of a Nespresso. But spread that over 5 years and it’s not much of a factor. Ease of cleanup and setup is about the same. Filling up the water tank on the Breville is a tad more work than the Nespresso and will slosh out if you’re not careful. I’d say if you factor in putting water in and warming up the Nespresso machine, it took me about 4-5 minutes to make a Nespresso latte. Factor in the dosing time and the Breville takes me 7-8 minutes. Close enough. Am I happy with it? Heck, YES!!!! I’d give my Nespresso machine 4/10 stars. I didn’t have to get in the car and drive to a coffee shop each day. I knew I was trading quality for (some) cost and convenience. I’d give my Breville 8.5/10 stars. The expresso shots just taste so wonderful. I know some people go down a rabbit hole trying to get a perfect expresso shot. I rank wanting to do that right next to improving (or even doing) latte art. :-). I couldn’t be more pleased with this new setup. ... show more

  • Why Did I Wait So Long??
Color: Damson Blue
If you are considering this machine, hesitating or wavering because of the price tag like I was, STOP WAITING AND GET IT NOW! I can't say enough how much I love this machine, how easy it is to use/clean, how great my lattes are. Coming from a Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista machine, I really debated if it was worth it to level up and get a "big girl coffee machine." IT IS! I am honestly shocked at how much better my coffees are now. I am not a pro and still learning, but it is easy to make a latte, and pretty quick too (3 minutes start to finish now after a week of ownership). You might be thinking that the amount of "all caps" and exclamation points in this review are the result of being overly-caffeinated (and you're probably not wrong), but I can assure you this glowing review is mostly because I love this so much that I want to help others see the light! So if you are like I was, a little nervous and on the fence, hop off that fence and buy this bad boy! You will be very glad you did. Happy caffeination! ... show more

  • Amazing Machine and Perfect for Daily Use I love this espresso machine.
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
I love this espresso machine. The size fits perfectly on my counter and it feels solid and well made. The build quality is impressive and you can tell it’s made to last. The adjustable coffee temperature lets me get the flavor just how I like it, and the grinder and tamping system make the process smooth and consistent. The espresso comes out rich and full of flavor every time. I’m still practicing my milk frothing for latte art, but overall this machine is durable, reliable, and a great value for the quality. ... show more
