  • Very Satisfied Owner
Color: Silver,Black
Bottom-line up front: I've owned this for a year and am very happy with my purchase. Dialing-in takes patience and (a lot of) trial and error. It really does make a superior espresso to many of the over-rated coffee shops in your hometown. I hesitate to buy coffee anywhere now. Long-form: I bought the La Specialista Maestro after comparing it to super automatic and semi-super automatic machines. My comparison shopping consisted mostly of YouTube videos, web reviews, and a visit to a Williams Sonoma. I did not do any taste testing; however, I doubt that other automatic machines that cost more will produce a noticeably superior cup once you get your La Specialista dialed in properly. Speaking of dialing-in, it does take trial and error and patience. Once you figure out the settings for the types of beans you're using (hopefully fresh), it is pretty easy to adjust once you get a new bag or roast of comparable type. It took me about a month of constant tinkering to really get this the way my wife and I both like our espresso and espresso-based drinks. The included literature is your friend here. Many of the YouTube videos I watched on dialing in or using La Specialista machines were not that helpful. Set-up and routine maintenance are pretty straight forward. Again, the included literature is your friend. I appreciate the dummy lights reminding me to descale and to perform other tasks. I'm very satisfied with the Maestro. After a year of ownership, I really have no complaints and would probably buy it again if it became irreparable outside of its complimentary extended warranty period. Hopefully, that doesn't happen though, because I like using it. Things you probably know but are worth reiterating here: (1) weight could be an issue for some people and (2) overhead cabinet clearance could be an issue in some kitchens. An extra set of hands and a tape measure could come in handy. Things I don't like: First, the DeLonghi videos online show a different menu of milk-based drinks than the North American version. Some overseas markets have a Latte Macchiato (milk first then coffee) function whereas the North American version just has a latte function (coffee first then milk). The difference seems trivial, but I would prefer the macchiato setting to the latte setting. Second, the milk settings for the automatic milk frother are not adjustable, just the coffee and temperature. I would like the ability to have manual control over the automatic milk frother. The second issue is my biggest gripe, but it isn't a deal breaker to me. ... show more

  • Worst Purchase I Ever Made on Amazon
Color: Silver,Black
Worst purchase I ever made on Amazon because Amazon did not offer free shipping on this return. This sucker weighs like 35 lbs and I am military living overseas… so it’s going to cost me hundreds of dollars just to return the broken product. What’s broken? First, it took about 50 tries just to get it to brew for the first time, due to “air blockage” according to the troubleshooting. I finally got it to brew. The milk-dispensing system, however, I could never get to work properly. The steam wand works maybe 1 in 10 tries after turning the machine on and off over and over again. The “my” program setting did not keep the brewing or water dispensing times I set… it seemed just to do it’s own thing. Overall… extremely disappointed. It is gorgeous to look at - but the machine I received was a real lemon. ... show more

  • Drastic improvement over our last machine
Color: Silver,Black
With a cost of $1300 we are hoping for some longevity from this machine…. Extracts full flavor once you dial it into your flavor preferences. We’ve used it for almost 2 full weeks without any issues however this morning for some reason the “grinder shoot” became clogged and had to do an emergency cleaning in order to have my morning cup👍 Thinking we’ll have to put the cleaning of the grinder on a scheduled preventable maintenance program. It’s a beautiful machine sitting on the counter and would recommend it to a discriminatory and knowledgeable person who knows exactly what they want. Because of the price we added Amazon’s extended warranty to sleep a little better at night knowing it’s covered. UPDATE - The machine had been dependable for everyday use for us for almost a year now. The descaling of this machine is a bit of a pain and is a long drawn out process that takes quite a period of time. Other than that we have enjoyed our daily hot beverages every morning that’s as good of quality as any franchise store. ... show more

  • So close, yet so far, overall not worth it because De'Longhi cheaped out
Color: Silver,Black
This was very close to being an excellent machine. In a vacuum, it produces great espresso in any style you prefer. 5 Temperature settings are excellent. Easy purging and Americanos on command. Programmable and manual controls, and easy to use interface once you give it just a few minutes to understand. The built-in tamping is pretty good, though a little problematic since it doesn't let you do things like properly WDT or distribute, and the tamp isn't really a perfect or clean one, but it's still nice and gets the job done. The auto milk drink creation is decent and kind of an interesting touch. The build quality is mostly nice and the drip tray is pretty great. This came so close to being a great machine. Now here's why, when not looked at "in a vacuum", it's overall not worth the money. It comes down to two things which are very low quality - the Grinder (which is unspeakably bad) and the Steam Wand (which is below average at best). - The Grinder is horrendous - part 1. EIGHT grind settings for espresso is just unacceptable, especially on a machine with this price tag, as anyone with any experience with espresso knows it requires micro-adjustments much more so than any other brewing method. Between varying baskets with different flow rates and designs, infinite types of beans that require nuanced adjustments, different shot types like ristretto vs normale vs lungho (to name just a few), and the list goes on - 8 settings is not even remotely acceptable and will not produce good espresso across these different variables. - The Grinder is horrendous - part 2. The way it's designed is mind-bogglingly bad in key ways bordering on infuriating. You cannot take out the hopper with any beans in there because there's no catch and you make a terrible mess each time. Cleaning this thing effectively is literally impossible and the cleanliness of this grinder is actually quite disgusting all around. There's a little "tab" under where the arrow is that literally has coffee grounds in it after a few grinds that are impossible to ever get out. There's coffee grounds in places which are simply inaccessible, permanently. Think about that - you are brewing shots like this. I can name like 10 other things that make this grinder less than worthless but in the end the biggest two are the grind sizes are no where remotely near enough and it is just disgustingly dirty and impossible to clean once again even "remotely" properly even after just rudimentary grinding. I also won't even hinge on after doing "Test grinds" for 2 hours the grinder literally BROKE entirely, as I'll chalk that off to a fluke, but still worth mentioning in passing - I was going to return it anyway at this point. - The steam wand is fairly awful and significantly outclassed by almost any espresso machine I've tried 1/3rd its price like the Bambino Plus or even Gaggia Classic Pro. It's weak, it's slow, getting a "vortex" on it is very difficult, and is overall just barely passable. It will make passable microfoamed milk but at this price range, why bother for such mediocrity. So all in all, if it had a better steam wand that you could find in machines at much lower price brackets, and the grinder portion was entirely redesigned from the bottom up an had at least 4-5x the number of grind sizes, honestly, this machine would be worth every penny and quite great. As it is though, why on earth spend this price tag on a machine that just produces good espresso when you can buy a Breville Bambino (not plus) that can do exactly that for like $300, to name just one option. ... show more
