🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Barista Express Impress coffee machine has earned high praise for its ability to produce quality espresso shots, offering users extensive control over brewing parameters. Reviewers appreciate the built-in grinder's auto-adjust feature, the set of maintenance tools, and the overall improvement in coffee taste compared to previous machines. However, mastering the machine requires time and effort, especially for those new to making espresso at home. Several users noted issues with beans sticking in the grinder and the lack of a water level sensor, which could potentially damage the machine if not monitored.

Pros

  • ☕ Improved taste of espresso compared to other machines
  • 🛠️ Comes with a useful set of maintenance tools
  • 🔄 Built-in grinder adjusts automatically to grind the correct amount of beans
  • 🌡️ Offers control over brewing temperature
  • 💡 Informative setup and usage videos, despite being somewhat corny

Cons

  • ⏳ Requires time and effort to master
  • 🔄 Occasional issues with beans sticking in the grinder
  • 🚫 No water level sensor, risking damage to the machine
  • 🧼 Cleaning can be cumbersome, especially with regular descaling needed

Should I Buy It?

If you're passionate about espresso and are willing to invest the time into mastering this machine, the Barista Express Impress could significantly enhance your coffee experience with its superior taste and customizable brewing options. Consider your needs and willingness to engage with the machine's features before purchasing.

  • Best Machine You Will Use- Easy, Affordable, Delicious
Color: Black Truffle
I seriously love this machine. It is my baby. I was using the Nespresso thing, but realized I was spending an absurd amount of money on Nespresso pods each month. And honestly? This machine makes 1000% better coffee. I even feel like it's more caffeinated this way? Overall, so easy to use. It's a smart machine. It takes a few tries to get comfortable, but once you do, you are going to love it. Word of advice: if your espresso is coming out super fast- go finer with your grind (lower the number); if your espresso is not coming out at all- go coarser with your grind (higher number). You want a smooth, honey-like stream at first. It's a bit loud, but you only use it for a few minutes, so don't worry about waking everyone up. It's so easy to use, well worth the money. And even with buying this machine, I will be saving money this year cause the alternatives are so darn expensive! ... show more

  • Excellent espresso maker
Color: Damson Blue
We love pretty much all aspects of this machine. Grinder is great - we've figured out the settings within a couple of attempts - having a few different types of espresso beans handy when it arrives makes the learning process very easy. It's relatively easy to get a good balance between pressure and flow with just a couple of tries. If the beans are right, it'll make a wonderful crema as well. We use it once or twice a day, so 2-4 double shots a day - it's been flawless and the cleaning process is straight forward and works well. The overflow tray needs emptying perhaps once or twice a week depending on usage, definitely not the concern I was expecting based on reading some of the reviews. It fits perfectly below our cabinet and looks beautiful in the blue color. Oh and the grinder/tamper cool how it learns and gives a perfect amount of coffee after 1 or 2 brews. This is a great machine for espresso and lattes, though we don't and won't use the aerator as we have a separate milk frother. No need for the hot water dispenser, though we have tried it out just to make sure it works as needed. I highly recommend this espresso maker. ... show more

  • A Fantastic Machine!
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
After being sorely disappointed by a classic Nespresso machine and being wowed by the espresso that came out of a friend's Breville Infuser, I purchased this machine. It was on sale for about $200 off, so it was a great buy! I was intrigued by the assisted tamping, as I seemed to always have inconsistent results when tamping by myself. This machine really eliminates a lot of the guess work. I wasn't looking to make a daily coffee into a hobby. I just want a fast way to have a tasty drink to bring to work. The Impress system is fantastic. I prefer single shots while my partner prefers doubles, and it remembers settings for both, so you do not have to change the settings between users. I reset the auto dosing whenever I open a new bag of beans and within a few runs, it is all dialed in. The grinder has The included accessories are well thought out. The razor tool, for trimming coffee off a portafilter that has been filled too high, is made of thick metal. The tool for unscrewing the shower screen and cleaning the milk nozzle are also excellent inclusions. A trial set of cleaning chemicals is nice for starting off, but the full sized Breville descale powder and cleaning tablets are pricier than the just-as-good generic ones. While I was intrigued by the faster heating, Baratza burrs, and auto milk frothing of the Touch Impress, I didn't really like the idea of having to swipe through menus on a resistive touch screen to make coffee. The reviews seemed to be plagued with error code issues and crashing. The physical buttons and indicator lights seem like they'll stand the test of time a little better. If Breville released an upgraded model with those features but no touch screen, I'd be all over it. I live in the Southwest with very hard water, I would’ve appreciated the ability to adjust the descale reminder frequency like you can on the Breville Touch models. Having used the machine for about 6 weeks now, I have found it already necessary to descale the machine despite the light not turning on. The only non-Touch model that seems to have this feature is the classic Oracle. Another quip has been the clearance between the portafilter and the drip tray. Anything besides a low-profile mug simply won't fit under the portafilter without removing the drip tray. This could be improved by getting a bottomless portafilter for an additional inch of clearance, but having a slightly higher profile machine would be nice. Overall, I am very pleased with this machine. Give it a shot if you want high quality coffee with a little more handholding than the completely manual machines. ... show more

  • Great Espresso Machine
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
I absolutely love my coffee. I don't know how people survived before they learned to roast coffee beans and brew their morning cup. My previous fully automatic machine died, repair was $700+ and they no longer had electronic parts. I had to get another machine and quickly. I was a grizzly bear without my coffee! I selected the Barista Express Impress. (Couldn't they find a better name?) As far as this machine, it is more difficult than making drip coffee in your Keurig. It is designed to give you the tools to make the best coffee that you ever had. However, you need to learn how to use it. It takes a lot of time to master because you have control of parameters I did not know existed. The machine has a nice set of tools for maintenance and daily use. The tool tray attaches to the rear of the drip tray and is easily reached by pulling out the drip tray. The machine senses how much coffee to grind and automatically adjusts to grind the correct amount of beans. On several occasions, the beans stuck in the grinder, so I had to manually grind to get the correct level. No big deal but it mess up the level of beans to grind and it takes several cups of coffee to get it right again. I think that is why there are a lot of complaints about the grind level changing. I have learned to "bump" the bean hopper to free the beans before there are problems. If you listen, you can hear the grinder start to run free. I think Breville needs to redesign the hopper so beans flow freely. That is the only real criticism I have found. There are some things you need to know. First off, the beans you choose are extremely important. They affect the coffee more than anything else. Second, you control the coffee grind. You get to choose exactly how fine you grind. That is a major factor in making coffee. Third, you get to control the brewing temperature. I haven't figured out how yet, but I am happy with the brew as it is. When I make a latte, I use the microwave oven to heat the milk. If you want latte art, you will need to use the milk frother. I tried it a few times and it works well. There is a lot to clean, so I don't use it. There are a few problems. My machine would only grind as I was holding the grind button. I unplugged the machine and it worked correctly when I plugged it back in. The machine stopped brewing. The pump would run with a noise that sounded like the machine would explode. When I turned the machine around to get the serial number (it was not on the back like Support told me--I think it is on the machine underside), I realized that I had run out of water! There is no water low sensor, so it is easy for the machine to run dry. Since a dry pump will fail very quickly, this is a major oversight. The machine needs to be descaled regularly, especially if you live in a hard water area. Cleaning supplies are too expensive so I buy citric acid in bulk and generic cleaning tablets. Both work well. My water used to come from a reverse osmosis filter but I no longer have that luxury. I think I need to start buying water from one of those water stores that are popping up all over. On the whole, the machine makes an excellent cup but it takes knowledge and time to learn. ... show more

  • Finally, a good espresso at home!
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
This is my first espresso machine. I’ve worked my way through some basic - ninja type coffee machines, chemex pour overs, overnight cold brews, and mocha pots. While I’m those have their own merits, this is a really good machine for those who want to get started with the art of brewing that perfect espresso. It took me a 2-3 trials to get to 36g of espresso from 18gm of beans in 31 seconds. I think this is what we call the golden zone. Still working my way through steaming that perfect milk. Where this machine shines for me - Grinding, and tamping without mess is great for starters like myself. Drip tray is big! PID helps a lot in finding if the grind is too fine or too course - pours too late vs too soon with live pressure monitoring is good! Cleaning parts is easy! Water refill is a breeze! Where I am struggling a bit - Wish it came with a bottomless portafilter as well, so I could have checked if it’s channeling well or if it can use a wdt tool before a tamp. Milk frothing is a bit of an art, I think it’s just me and not the machine for this one. Tip for all who are considering any espresso machine - please buy puck screens - they make cleaning a breeze! ... show more

  • What a Home Expresso Machine should be!
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Has a quality Italian made pump for better durability. The automated self adjusting Grind to Brew Measuring and Tamping makes consistent results amazing. Dialing in the brew is straight forward. A pleasure to use. A 54mm WDT to break up clumping of grounds before tamping is a worthwhile extra (~$30) to purchase for consistent extraction, especially for drawing equal sizes of Dual cup extraction. ... show more

  • The Ferrari among the espresso machines The Ferrari among the espresso machines
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
The Barista Express Impress (BEI) is like a Ferrari - and the first couple of coffee (g)rounds will be miserable until you know how to handle the performance! Fill up the machine with water and coffee and start optimizing your espresso experience. Since the pump in the machine is set to a fixed flow rate, you need to tune the pressure for the coffee (and its taste) with the granularity of the coffee: this is done with the default insert - no need to add a filter to a "cup" (filter) to the PortaFilter (coffee scoop). Read and understand the manual. It explains in detail how to adjust the grind size and the (auto) dosing of the coffee. If the coffee flow starts almost immediately with pressing the 2-cup button and there's virtually no pressure built-up while brewing, the coffeee will taste sour (acidic), show some foam, and give you the impression that it is "strong" (with plenty of volume). This is the worst coffee the BEI is going to produce by default - throw it away. Now decrease the grind size (lower number) by about 4 units. If the coffee flow starts after some 15 seconds with pressing the 2-cup button and the pressure builts up into the "Espresso" range without any significant coffee flow (very low volume), your coffee will be bitter and overwhelming. This coffee can be diluted with the built-in hot water dispenser (great for tea with its 90C, too) but it's a rather specific taste. Better increase the grind size (number) by about 2 units. Try again! The optimal coffee should taste neither sour nor acidic, but instead have a somewhat "nutty" flavor that leaves a pleasent aftertaste - even without dilution or added milk. If you need to make changes now, adjust the grind size by 1 unit until it matches your preferences either way. The auto-dosing will adjust to your grind settings within a couple of coffees. TL:DR Go by taste and volume - not by pressure, flow rate, or weather. Make sure to use filtered (fridge) water and fresh beans. Otherwise: crap in - crap out! There's a couple of things with the BEI that made me smile and are a very nice touch: 1.) There's a hidden tray behind the drip tray (under the water container) that provides enough space for all additional tools and "cups" (filters) that come with the machine. Very thoughtful! 2.) There is a "Razor" trimming tool (see photo) that can be useful to trim away excess coffee ground volume when playing with the grind sizes. It's not critical, but its a nice touch and a pleasent piece of metal to play around with while making a coffee. 3.) The water container can be left in place, so you can move the machine closer to a way and simply fill up the container from the side - the container cover elegantly folds to the back. 4.) I mentioned the hot water dispenser above: it's useful to dilute your coffee without messing up the grind size and you can make tea if you don't feel like caffeine today. The temperature is perfect and the flow rate is fast! There's one thing that bothered me when installing the BEI and it could've been covered in the manual: When setting up the machine, the pump was priming the system, but there was no water flowing (shower screen, hot water dispenser, or steam funnel) for something like 5-10 cycles and I thought the machine was broken (making some very concerning "dry pumping" sounds). Another thing that could easily be tracked by the machine is the flow time. There's a already a very nice bar indicator for the compression of the coffee ground, so just add an indicator for the flow time sweetspot of around 30s with bars adding 2 seconds in each direction. Would be a nice touch! All in all, the machine is fantastic and produces amazing coffee - if you are bringing some patience to learn its tricks. Looking forward to my next coffees! ... show more

  • A Game-Changer for Home Espresso Enthusiasts – Worth Every Penny! A Game-Changer for Home Espresso Enthusiasts – Worth Every Penny!
Color: Black Truffle
I recently upgraded to the Breville Barista Express Impress Espresso Machine (model BES876BTR in Black), and after a couple of months of daily use, I'm thoroughly impressed. As someone who loves a good latte but isn't a professional barista, this machine strikes the perfect balance between ease of use and quality results. It's an all-in-one setup with a built-in grinder, tamper, and milk frother, making it ideal for home setups without needing extra gadgets. Pros: Intelligent Dosing and Assisted Tamping: The Impress Puck System is a standout feature – it automatically doses the right amount of coffee and guides you through tamping with just the right pressure. No more guesswork or messy overflows! This makes pulling consistent shots straightforward, even for beginners. Quick Heat-Up and Quiet Operation: It heats up in seconds thanks to the Thermojet system, and it's surprisingly quiet compared to other machines I've tried. Perfect for early morning brews without waking the household. Grinder Versatility: With 25 grind settings (or is it 30? Either way, plenty), you can fine-tune for different beans. I've experimented with light roasts and dark ones, and it handles them all well, producing rich, flavorful espresso. User-Friendly Interface: The controls are intuitive, with a clear dial for shot volume and strength. The steam wand froths milk beautifully for creamy lattes or cappuccinos – it's powerful and easy to clean. Build Quality and Design: The black finish looks sleek on my counter, and it's sturdy without being bulky. Cleanup is a breeze with the removable drip tray and auto-purge feature. Cons: Learning Curve for Perfection: While it's forgiving with its pressure ramping (which helps avoid channeling in the puck), it can sometimes feel a bit slow or inconsistent if you're aiming for pro-level shots right away. I had a few under-extracted pulls at first until I dialed in the grind. Price Point: At around $700–$800 (depending on where you buy), it's not cheap, but for the features, it feels like a solid investment over buying separate components. Limited Hopper Size: The bean hopper isn't huge, so if you're making multiple drinks a day for a family, you might need to refill often. Overall, I'd rate this machine a solid 4.5 out of 5. It's elevated my home coffee game tremendously – my espressos now rival those from my local cafe, and I've saved a ton on takeout. If you're new to espresso or want an upgrade from basic pod machines, the Breville Barista Express Impress is highly recommended. Just be prepared to tweak settings a bit to match your taste. Highly satisfied! That I bought another one for my in-laws. Worth every penny money can buy! ... show more
