A friend has a similar unit to this which she uses primarily for dinners, parties, etc. She really likes it. So, I thought I'd give it a try. We have a small chest type freezer which maintains very low temperatures at our cabin. But there is no ice maker capability. We have been using trays, to make ice and fill an "ice bag" so it's ready for use. But the trays are a pain to fill and use. They also have to be kept flat. So, they must be placed on a shelf in the freezer. My idea is to use this to make ice, to fill the bag, and then to store the unit until I need it again. For this purpose, this BREEZOME Portable Ice Machine excels. It's extremely to set up and use. Make sure you follow instructions to keep it level for 24 hours upon receipt. Not doing this can damage the compressor, as the oil needs to fully drain to the bottom internally. You can move it around. Just keep it level to within 45 degrees. You just unbox it, remove the packing tape, add water to the open reservoir below the ice collection basket, plug it in, power on and select the ice size required. That's it. It goes to work. The way this unit works is that it has an open pool reservoir below the ice basket. It pumps water from this and trickles it down ten small fingers which are cooled in the back top. The ice freezes on the surface of these fingers. This happens very quickly, especially for the smaller size ice. After a fixed time, the unit cycles, reverses the refrigerant flow and melts the ice on the fingers from the inside. The ice drops onto a sloped shelf and a small conveyor shelf lifts it into the basket. Then, the cycle repeats. It will fill the basket in about 30 - 45 minutes. The one notable thing is that the unit does not include any type of internal cooling for the ice storage area. So, if the ice on the bottom of the basket melts the water drains back into the reservoir to be recycled. This happens more frequently if you are in a warm environment. The function of the unit is self-limiting. It will stop operating if it detects a low water level. So, if you want more ice than what the unit makes in one operation cycle you will need to remove the ice to another container and refill the water reservoir. If people are using the ice this becomes more apparent, as you will run out of water and need to lift the basket to add more. There is one important nuance. The ice towards the bottom of the basket is continuously melting, as the interior of the unit is insulated but not a freezer. To make it also a freezer would increase the cost. It's a tradeoff. So, the ice towards the bottom of the basket will be smaller than that at the top and slightly wet. If you are making several basket fulls of ice and placing them in a bag, etc. to accumulate ice in your freezer, as I am, the wet ice will stick together into a block similar to what ha with purchased ice bags that get warm on the way home. The remedy for this is to literally just take the bag out of your freezer in its solid state and slam it down on a counter or the floor on each side. This will liberate the individual cubes, and you'll have normal ice cubes. If you get some out and put it right back in the freezer, you'll only have to do this once. This operation may be more difficult if you are using some sort of container. I use zippered gallon freezer bags. This ice maker is perfect for my cabin use. It also will work great for small parties. The reservoir isn't large. But it fills very quickly. I heartily recommend this little ice maker. It deserves five solid stars.
