🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The product in question is an ice maker, which reviewers appreciate for its initial performance, including fast ice production and easy operation. However, customers report issues with noise, and cleanliness over time. The ice maker often develops loud groaning noises and collects black sludge, even with regular cleaning. The device also occasionally fails after about a year of use.

Pros

  • 👍 Rapid and substantial ice production
  • 👍 Simple to use and refill water reservoir
  • 👍 Produces enjoyable, small ice similar to establishing store-bought ice

Cons

  • 👎 Device gets noisier over time
  • 👎 Develops black sludge that's difficult to clean
  • 👎 May stop working after about a year of usage

Should I Buy It?

The answer depends on your needs. If you need a quick and easy solution for ice making, this product could be worth considering, especially with the addition of a protection plan. However, be aware of the potential issues of noise, cleaning, and longevity.

  • So, It’s an Investment…
I labored back and forth through ice makers, and the reviews are the most important thing for sure. I have to say I LOVE THE ICE THIS MAKES. It’s not bullet ice, it’s actually chewy nugget ice like Sonic, Holiday, etc. It’s awesome. Also, let me preface my review by agreeing with another review: unpackaged it and let it sit upright for a couple of days. That said; there are some pros and cons and helpful hints. Buy the warranty. It’s nothing for an expensive ice maker. Use distilled water. Clean often: I ran my ice maker for about a month and I was shocked how dirty it was! If you use regular water, you’ll end up with hard water deposits and dirt. Now I clean it every other week. It’s noisy: but not THAT noisy. After about a month, I started hearing that dreaded low whine I read about. It’s almost like it’s a part that is triggered when it’s too full of ice, or a belt? If you keep it on the kitchen, you cannot hear it from the other room. You can hear it dumped ice, just like your refrigerator dumps ice. It’s only loud if you are in the same room. It has to have some noise for the air to keep it cool. Each side has an air in/out take. They run softly. I had zero problems for the first month. Absolutely no water leakage, no weird sounds, not one problem. And I ran it constantly. Now, it’s filling (overfilling) the drip tray, and it has a whine. I think, and it’s just a guess, when we don’t use the ice as much, it melts. And then it leaks out. Also, I think my mom used tap water and that’s awful. It holds exactly 1 gallon of water in the machine, and I have to refill it about every three days, depending on who visits. Our family drinks tons if water now! It’s perfect for water bottles, and slushees. Overall, I LOVE THIS THING!!! No more trips to the gas station, and no more mystery ice. If this little thing that I keep meticulously clean has dirt collected …. Image any gas station or ice maker. Freaks me out! It has a clean cycle you can use. And it’s worked good so far!!! Just take care of it, because it is an investment, and it’ll take care if you!!! ... show more

  • Absolute worst Ice Maker and Horrendous Support STAY AWAY
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS MACHINE or Ones like this from CURTIS ( I would loop in GE Opal too since the machine fails so often) consider brakes like Thereye, Mueller, Kismile or anyone other than one made by Curtis. Check their warranty requirements and how they handle product failures. Requiring the customer to ship back a 45lb machine is very expensive. I purchased this ice maker for my mother who loves "sonic ice". I can assume if you are looking for a nugget ice maker you know or at least would love to have that delicious and crunchy ice at home. Its not the same to buy a bag and freeze it because its super hard again. So to start my initial findings it was great to start. Ice was delicious and then it all went horribly. The machine started leaking around the door because the design is just terrible. No other ice maker that is of quality has a slide out tray. Water leaks all over the place and we had to put towels down just to prevent it. Some suggested tilting the unit by a few millimeters and that didn't work either. Then compared to the other bullet or cube makers this unit gets black mold super quick. I have hard water and regularly clean it with citric acid or acetic acid. Descaling is not hard but keeping the mold away is hard. I moved to trying bleach in a small amount and that seemed to work briefly before the whole machine took a dump. I noticed water was pooling around the base and found it was leaking internally. The machine then decided it would no longer make any ice and instead squeals making horribly loud noises. I am quite familiar with the design of how these units work. They use an auger to force water up a metal tube that is freezing it as it moves up and then extrudes the chips of ice into a circular cutout as the same auger has an arm that breaks them off. Scotsman has had this design for decades and while its great at making ice it also breaks down. The seals leak causing water to cover the mechanicals mixing in the gear box leading to the gears rusting and breaking. The auger scores the walls of the metal tube causing metal shavings to flake off. The same auger that scored the walls can freeze up because its built up metal around the sidewalls. These are a few of the issues with this design that the Chinese knockoff made by Curtis for Frigidaire have still managed to screw up. For the price of this unit it should last longer than 5 months. So then comes to the warranty issue. I contacted Curtis about the ice machine and they want me to ship it back to them even when I have provided them video/photographic proof of the machine no longer working. The costs of packing it up and sending it back come to about $65. This is a standard method of warranty service with Curtis. They do not send replacements, they do not make contact except via email, they will not stand behind their products. They are literally just a mill selling these cheap machines for high prices and then telling you to go away if one breaks. The exception that the unit has to be mailed back to them I can assume was done to prevent warranty claims for those who don't want to fork over more money on such an expensive machine. I bought an extended warranty however it will not come into effect until the manufacture's warranty is over. See how they screw you. Out of any of my issues I wish to tell anyone to stay far away from these Curtis made machines. Nugget ice makers are great and I get why they are expensive over the bullet machines. But these manufactures need to make them better and stand behind them. ... show more

  • The wife LOVES it.
I bought this for my wife for Christmas as she is an ice enthusiast. I was leery of purchasing this because of the consistency of the negative reviews that indicated that it stopped working after a short time or being excessively loud. We are 4 months in and have had no issues. The machine isn't silent, but it certainly isn't loud. Not even when watching TV or reading a book 10 feet away. We have been very careful to follow all of the care guidelines in the manual, and so far so good. Though I don't particularly like chewing ice, from what I've gathered, Sonic has the gold standard for nugget ice. The nuggets that this machine produces look a little more square and a little more "solid" than what I've seen in my Sonic cups, but my wife says that it chews exactly the same. She loves it. If you're on the fence about getting this, I'd say go for it. ... show more

  • Works so far
First time using the machine so it may change as time goes on. So far it's been good it is louder than any other appliance I have besides my washing machine. I can hear it in the other room. I used the cleaning cycle first then set it to make ice overnight and by morning it was full. It does not make the ice like at sonic that people love the ice is more like small chuncks. Unless mine is defective because the way they described the ice is not the same as what my machine makes. I do like it and if it gets annoying I can turn it off. I just don't have freezer space to freeze all the ice we use so it will be handy. Update: I have used my ice machine almost 3 years now and it still works. I would like a different machine just because it's pretty annoying. It's too annoying to have on when guests are over and I work in the next room so I hear it all day while I work. The ice is fine but it builds up grime quicker now where the melted ice collects and is stained even though I clean it often and scrub it. I do wonder how clean the part where it makes the ice is since I can't take that apart but I run vinegar through it. I will keep using it for now but it has always been really loud since it's first cleaning cycle. ... show more

  • It’s the “Good” ice!! But sadly didn’t last long....(edited)
First gave this a 5 star review (see below) but sadly today I now have to change it to 1 star review as it has stopped working less than a week after we got it. It says “add water” despite being full of water. I’ve contacted the support address in the manual (which is not correct) and the filled out the form online and will adjust this review if it is able to get working again. So disappointed. If I didn’t want this to work as badly as I do, I would simply return it. Now, a week later after some trouble shooting it’s making more ice than my family can consume in a day and is amazing. We love this ice maker. It makes the best ice ever. Being home during this pandemic means our ice maker in our freezer can’t keep up with our family of 5 who is always home. This is a great addition! And it’s the “good” ice. We only run it during the day and put in extra into the freezer. It does clump a bit when refreezing but is easy to break it up. ... show more

  • Just so-so - don’t waste your time with this!
Updating my review after having the machine for 2 years and 5 months: Product support ended at the 2 year mark :/ Like others have said, the inside of the ice machine is covered in a stinky mold looking grime. I’ve cleaned, scrubbed, scrubbed and cleaned some more and nothing gets this stuff out. I’ve ran descaler through this and nothing works. It’s absolutely disgusting. I’ve continued to use it because it doesn’t touch the ice and I empty the ice fairly quickly into my freezer container, so the ice isn’t affected that I’m aware of. I even use filtered water for this thing and it still has the nasty black mold stuff. Then just today, May 21st, 2024, the machine completely stopped working. I turn the ice maker on and it just shuts off. Self cleaning option won’t work either. It sounds like it’s gonna start and then off it goes. I think it’s time this thing goes right in the garbage and I start buying nugget ice from the gas station up the road. I wouldn’t purchase this brand again because I feel like for close to $400, it’s should have lasted longer and should have been a better quality. I’d expect this from something cheaper. Original review: The machine is super heavy, so make sure you have help carrying the giant box up the stairs if you live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building 😳 The machine is pretty easy to set up and start using. The ice itself is just like delicious hospital ice! That was the goal! Once the machine starts making ice, be prepared for the noise level. This thing pops and makes the strangest noises the entire time it makes ice. It’s really loud. Super annoying, in fact. I work from home, about 15 feet from my kitchen, and when I’m on conference calls, my meeting attendees can hear it. The only other thing that I didn’t give much thought about when comparing ice machines, was that once the ice bin is full…it melts pretty fast. Don’t expect to have ice in the morning if it’s full before you go to bed. In that aspect, it’s not super convenient if you’ve done away with your old fashioned ice cube trays and need to have an iced coffee first thing in the morning. Be prepared to wait 30-60 minutes to get a full tumbler of ice. So the fact that this thing has pretty much zero insulation was a manufacturing fail in my opinion and I would have not purchased this one if I had known that :( ... show more

  • The good ice
UPDATE: Our maker is still working....kind of. It has been about 3 months and sometimes the buttons don't work or the whole thing lights up and makes noise but does nothing and doesn't respond. Also, a rather worrisome new development is the red color bleeding into the bottom reservoir where the melted ice goes. This water is recirculated to make new ice so whatever this mysterious red stuff is, it is getting in my ice.....whatever it is, I doubt it is anything good. We only use bottled water too so....At this point, I would not buy this product again. I was skeptical about the type of ice this would make but I wasn’t ready to splurge on an opal. This machine makes the good ice, harder than sonic ice closer to chick Fil a ice(which is superior anyways) but perfectly chewable. I saw other reviews saying it is loud and honestly it really isn’t that loud at all. I will say though it DOES NOT fit under the cabinets, we even tried removing the feet and it just doesn’t fit so we are putting it in a cabinet with an outlet, just something to keep in mind as you will need to find somewhere for it. We have zero clue what the UV feature is for, it isn’t mentioned at all in the directions. The manual it comes with is pretty crappy. Overall happy with it. ... show more

  • Great ice many issues
So far so good. This is much quieter than the NuAir machine and has yet to freeze up since we received it a month ago. The ice is good and I like the UV and light features. The only con is the height of the machine because it will not fit under my cabinets but that was on me for not checking the measurements. I can say if you like the “good ice” it’s worth the purchase. Update: so I’ve had this for over 1 1/2 years and it has issues. The ice itself is good and no weird taste. The issues are: the machine must be placed somewhere so the leaking water will not Damage a counter, it’s very loud, the tray leaks water as the ice melts. And as of today the sensor that detects if the bin is full isn’t working and won’t let it make ice. I see they have updated the machine so I will be purchasing a new ice maker rather than this one. Not bad for the money but I would not recommend after I have had time to use it. ... show more
