Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The countertop ice maker is praised for its compact size and ability to produce desirable "pebble ice" without taking up much space. The majority of users are happy with the ice quality, stating it fulfills their expectations perfectly. However, issues concerning the noise level and intermittent squealing noises have been flagged, which can be quite loud and irritating for some. Some customers also pointed out that it's not the best for producing large amounts for parties due to its modest capacity.

Pros

  • 👍 Fits easily on a countertop under cabinets
  • 👍 Makes desirable pebble-sized ice
  • 👍 Easy to operate and doesn't require a continuous water supply
  • 👍 Ability to keep ice cold when turned on

Cons

  • 👎 Loud operation
  • 👎 Can make a whining noise when the bin is near full
  • 👎 Sporadically skeals
  • 👎 Not suitable for making large quantities of ice for parties

Should I Buy It?

If you're into the unique "pebble ice" and don't have much countertop space, it's a good purchase. However, if noise level is a concern for you or you frequently need large amounts of ice, you might want to consider another option.

  • Makes the great little pebble ice in a small quantity...
We've been looking for a countertop ice maker that makes the little chewable pebble-sized ice cubes you find at Sonic and other restaurants, but don't have the space nor the need for one of the dishwasher-sized units that makes hundreds of pounds of ice. This one fits on our kitchen counter right under our cabinets (no need to get to the top for any reason) and makes a basketful of ice moderately quickly. This isn't one that you have to hook up a water supply to; you simply pull out the ice drawer and fill the reservoir under it, replace the drawer, turn it on and off it goes. It will stop making ice when the basket is full, and keeps the ice cold as long as you keep it turned on; otherwise the ice will melt, and the water goes back into the reservoir for the next icemaking session. We do not leave it on all of the time because it will try to suck water out of the reservoir as long as the basket's not full; we make a bunch and bag up the unused ice and put it in our freezer. We bought a dented one for quite a discount and it came with a better return policy than usual. I would say the only downsides of this would be that you can't leave it on with an empty reservoir because it makes that pump-sucking-air sound which is a little noisy (for good purpose, I imagine), and it doesn't make a large amount so forget supplying your party guests with lots of ice. It runs fairly quietly so it's not distracting. We didn't buy the extra side reservoir tank because we just don't make that much ice at one time, and you don't want lots of water sitting in the unit for a long period of time. We use bottled spring water because our tap water has a lot of minerals in it and would cause us to have to do the cleaning/descaling procedure frequently. ... show more

  • Great...when it works
The ice itself is great, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say about this Opal. After a few weeks, it noticeably slows down and requires constant cleaning. And cleaning is more than just running vinegar or their cleaning solution through it — you eventually have to take it apart and manually clean the tubes or mold will start building up. And yes, you have to use distilled water, but even then, environmental particles will build up that MUST be cleaned out. But even with regular maintenance, these machines simply do not last. I went through 4 of them before finally giving up and getting my money back (the motor gave out on 2 of them, the pump stopped working on another, and the extruder stopped working). ... show more

  • I own two
I have one for upstairs and one for downstairs. This product is quirky. It makes occasional weird noises, but it is occasional and usually needs water or cleaning, so I see it as a feature, not a bug. It had some pump issues early on (I owned the original Opal, their test model, before they were willing to slap the GE brand on it). One machine makes ice faster than the other, but I am not sure why. We found that using filtered water before adding it to the machine, which also has a filter, helps reduce the time between cleanings (I clean it way less than suggested). I still give it five stars because I have owned several ice machines. The best I have owned was installed 15 years ago and cost $2k before inflation. I also owned the KBice, which was an abysmal experience, and I finally gave up on it. That is the backdrop for my score. It is, without question, the best countertop ice maker. Cheaper models like KBice are, in fact, cheaper for a reason. Just be aware that these products require regular maintenance to work properly over the years. ... show more

  • Great!
Love my ice maker. It can be a bit loud but it’s so great and I use it several times a day. Needs a full sized cabinet to be on (initially planned to put it in a side cabinet that wasn’t full depth and it didn’t fit).

  • Overall bad product
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband. He'd been wanting one for such a long time. He opened it and got it set up on Christmas day. Everything worked as expected. The ice was perfect, the only draw back was that this machine is quite loud. Having this in an kitchen that opens up to the living room is probably not a good idea. The machine worked perfectly for 3 weeks. Then it stopped making ice all together. I completed a cleaning and descaling to no avail. So, I contacted customer service. They provided some troubleshooting that did not fix the issue. This was all done via email and they are very slow to get back to you. After several days of no response I called and they were able to approve a return and send me a refurbished machine. The machine took 2 weeks to get. The new machine has this horrid squeeking noise. I haven't gotten a response from the manufacturer in 5 days. So, after several hundred dollars, 2 machines in 2 months and only having 3 weeks of no issues, I would not purchase this product. ... show more

  • Amazing
I got this for my mom for Christmas a few years ago and we absolutely love it!! It makes the perfect ice every time. You don’t have to worry about filling it up and constantly wasting water if you don’t use it often, as it reuses the water when the ice melts. It self measures how much ice is in the container and automatically starts making more, so don’t leave the scoop in the container or you’ll lose it in the ice. So far after like 3 years it still works perfectly so definitely high quality and won’t crap out after a few months ... show more

  • it worked, crapped out after 1 month out of warranty
heavier than it looks, just barely sits under upper cabinet on countertop, makes alot of noise, we shut it off when wife is working from home in breakfast nook. we mainly bought it to have a portable ice maker for our RV, after investigating the "Sonic ice" differentiations, we decided to get this. it is Sonic ice, the chewey pellets, my wife loves it. EDIT: we used it constantly for a year, ice production dropped off but still acceptable, until it just started leaking out the bottom 1 month out of warranty (not constantly, which is weird). It's going in the trash, will probly buy another when I can afford it again. ... show more

  • Too hard for chewing
I didn’t have any of the issues people that wrote it one star reviews had. I thought it made the ice fairly noiselessly for hard water chunks falling into an empty plastic container, and it made the ice pretty quickly. The reason for my return is that the ice it creates is too hard for chewing. I have access to an Ice-O-Matic machine at work that creates ice the consistency of packed snow, which is absolutely delightful to chew. This is more like smaller bite sizes of the opaque ice you get from any refrigerator, much too hard for daily consumption. But if that consistency is fine for you, then this is the perfect tabletop ice machine that does what it says. ... show more
