  • Worth the money!
Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
I only received this three days ago, but I'm really satisfied! First, it came well packaged and protected. It was delivered three days before I expected it! I had read all the reviews on Amazon about it and also read the manual online. It came full of hydraulic oil, I had bought a gallon before it arrived, because neither the reviews nor the owners manual were clear on whether it came filled with oil. It did. I loosened the vent cap 4 1/2 turns and cycled it through about 4 times. I oiled the ways and anvil with WD40 lithium grease. I also bought, ahead of time a 12 gauge 50 foot extension cord. From looking at the manual, I thought I needed a 10 gauge, but after looking at loads recommended on cords at the store, I bought a 12 gauge and it works fine for 50 feet. I started splitting oak. This oak was cut last winter or the winter before, so it was dry. Our oak in the southwest isn't like eastern oak. They are small evergreen trees with lots of knots, stringy, and very few really straight pieces. This oak was primarily Mexican blue oak and Emory Oak. I believe it's much tougher to split than red oak. However, the splitter did the job quite well. It had some trouble with forked logs, but I was able to try to split them several different ways and it finally got the job done. I also split some Alligator juniper and it splits juniper like butter. I am very impressed! I expected trouble with the oak, but it was minimal. Other reviews mention splitting over a cord a day and some made very outrageous claims. I believe one review mentioned splitting one cord per hour. A face cord, maybe, but not a full 4 X 4 X 8 cord. It took me about 8 hours to haul, split and stack a full cord of oak. The reviews mentioned the need to raise the splitter to a more ergonomic height and I agree. I have a garden wagon that is 48" long, and it worked perfectly to sit the spitter on. Two people may be able to split a cord in an hour, but I don't believe so. I don't know how this splitter will hold up over time, but it seems solidly built and I really worked it hard, so I think it will last a long time. If I was going to buy again, I might go for the 8 Ton one, but right now the 7Ton splitter seems sufficient for my needs. We burn about two cords per year. ... show more

  • Awesome, Awesome, and Awesome
Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
ups dollied it up to my garage door, and rolled it inside after ringing door bell. Box was manufactured box and Styrofoam was molded to protect and surround the 100 pound Boss log splitter. It was simple to open box and remove machine from box. A+ I read directions in manual just because wise thing to do. I opened the fly nut 6 or 7 times and ran it until air was out of hydraulic line. After retightened I decided to check oil on the stick after reading reviews about oil being at lowest line from factory. I tilted it up on end and put 7mm hex in nut and will not move. I mean will not turn loose. So I called 800 number. Got a very pleasant gentlemen on phone that told me that's because they use thread lock so it will not leak in transit. He said you have to give the hex wrench a hard tap to break the glue or use a lock creasant wrench (vise-grips) to lock on the round end of hex dip stick and give that a tap to loosen. This is not in the manual. Word of advise: Do not strip your 7mm hex nut, use the lock wrench and tap it and behold it is loose. Then screw it out with hex wrench that is included. I found the hydrologic oil to still be between the lines. Then I spent about 3 hours splitting about half a cord of wood. it went through my hard sweet gum ball wood like butter( if you get it with the grain) . Stacked it and covered it and done. Also use some kind of silicone spray on the black and red back and forth stuff. Oil will cause wood chips to stick to it. And it helps to prevent screeching sounds. Great price, great design, great one handed control. I'll never wear this thing out. I bought from amazon there 50 foot 12 guage 15 amp cord and it works great with no issues. great price also http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HWRS6S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 ... show more

  • Took the Work Out of Splitting Logs
Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
I'm sick of splitting logs. I wasn't that familiar with log splitters, but the weather was getting cold and it was time to get wood prepared for the fireplace. I watched some videos, read some reviews and ordered this Boss electric splitter. First I'll say that I love splitting wood with this. It's almost "enjoyable". I think the logs have to be 10 inches or less in diameter- like dinner plate size. That fit the bill for me. It works kind of slowly, which seems standard for these machines and gives a feeling of safety. It works well and I'd recommend it. That being said, here are a few "cons"- but by no means "deal breakers": The handle that engages the splitting mechanism has to be removed after you use it so you can tip it upright and wheel it back to it's storage space. Kinda think it should have been designed differently, but that's that. You'll have to take the handle on and off. There's a wing nut that opens and closes the vent. This needs to be opened when you use it by turning it 4 times or so (read instructions for specifics) and closed after use. Again, kinda think this could have been designed to work automatically? And one last thing- The Boss stickers were placed on the side and after about 20 uses, (splitting mechanism moves over/passed the sides) the Boss sticker....got the sliding splitter stuck. I had to rip off the stickers and then use a one sided razor blade to remove the remainder. Not a huge deal, but maybe the stickers should be placed elsewhere or the information be painted on. Just a few suggestions. It's a very good item for those of us tired of splitting wood the old fashioned way. ... show more
