I only received this three days ago, but I'm really satisfied! First, it came well packaged and protected. It was delivered three days before I expected it! I had read all the reviews on Amazon about it and also read the manual online. It came full of hydraulic oil, I had bought a gallon before it arrived, because neither the reviews nor the owners manual were clear on whether it came filled with oil. It did. I loosened the vent cap 4 1/2 turns and cycled it through about 4 times. I oiled the ways and anvil with WD40 lithium grease. I also bought, ahead of time a 12 gauge 50 foot extension cord. From looking at the manual, I thought I needed a 10 gauge, but after looking at loads recommended on cords at the store, I bought a 12 gauge and it works fine for 50 feet. I started splitting oak. This oak was cut last winter or the winter before, so it was dry. Our oak in the southwest isn't like eastern oak. They are small evergreen trees with lots of knots, stringy, and very few really straight pieces. This oak was primarily Mexican blue oak and Emory Oak. I believe it's much tougher to split than red oak. However, the splitter did the job quite well. It had some trouble with forked logs, but I was able to try to split them several different ways and it finally got the job done. I also split some Alligator juniper and it splits juniper like butter. I am very impressed! I expected trouble with the oak, but it was minimal. Other reviews mention splitting over a cord a day and some made very outrageous claims. I believe one review mentioned splitting one cord per hour. A face cord, maybe, but not a full 4 X 4 X 8 cord. It took me about 8 hours to haul, split and stack a full cord of oak. The reviews mentioned the need to raise the splitter to a more ergonomic height and I agree. I have a garden wagon that is 48" long, and it worked perfectly to sit the spitter on. Two people may be able to split a cord in an hour, but I don't believe so. I don't know how this splitter will hold up over time, but it seems solidly built and I really worked it hard, so I think it will last a long time. If I was going to buy again, I might go for the 8 Ton one, but right now the 7Ton splitter seems sufficient for my needs. We burn about two cords per year.

I received this just a couple of days ago and have only used it once, so I can't testify as to its durability. That said, It has exceeded my expectations to this point. I really like the one step operation - not having to press a button while activating "the lever" which nearly all other electric splitters require. I also like that it stores upright - takes up very little space. It is heavy - 130+ lbs., but even at my advanced age and with a disability, I'm able to move it around. I also like that there's no gas engine to "hope it starts". At this point I have split some not real large, but pretty hard and "gnarly" logs with it, and it has not stalled or failed yet. It comes well packaged and includes the hydraulic fluid. There is no assembly required (other than attaching the control handle). The packaging is durable as Fed Ex's handling didn't seem to be too delicate. The box was pretty scuffed up. Edit (add on): I now have split considerably more wood so I will point out a few more things. First, I have some dry oak that greatly exceeds the recommended size capacity for the machine. For the most part it worked great. A couple were a problem and the issue was that they were too long, barely fitting on the splitter. I "shortened" them and they split fine. Apparently, the hydraulic piston has more power further down the stroke than when it first starts. Also, I found that moving the splitter was easier if I picked it up by its (front) legs - not the curved front bar as recommended.

Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
I had gotten another splitter from a local home improvement store, then went on line to double check the operating instructions and started reading the reviews about people being injured due to the unsafe design of that splitter (have to hold the power button in and press the ram lever while operating putting your body and face right over the splitting log), so I returned it still in the box. Recognizing the safety issues with the other splitter, I ordered the Boss and just received it yesterday. It cost about $100 more, but it's no doubt worth skipping a trip to the ER that the other splitter has reportedly caused (thanks other Amazon reviewers). I also bought the stand, which is a must unless you need the extra exercise and want to wear out your back and knees. So, the Boss is just what I needed and gets 5 stars. Split a stack of logs is 90min. Yes, it's a little slow, but I consider that an advantage as you need to watch the logs split and back off if the log is twisted or you hit a knot. I had no issue at all splitting red and white oak. Every now and then, I'd get a log with very tight grain that will pop off the splitter so as long as you stay in the operator safe zone and not on the sides, you're generally out of the line of a flying piece of wood. most of the logs split without having to push it more than a few inches past the cutting blade, so it's really not that slow. I generally split wood into smaller pieces because I can get more on the rack, it dries faster, it's easier to handle and burns better than full, halved or quartered logs. The only thing Boss needs to do is add another accessory - a longer operator handle with a slight bend in it for two reasons, 1) to get you another foot or so away from the splitter (even greater improved safety) and 2) keeps you from having to bend so far over to push the short handle down. I'm tired of swinging an axe, so this is perfect for me. Other than that, no complaints. I recommend this one.

Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
I have a wood fired offset smoker and a small suburban fire place. For years I have periodically bought a load of firewood that is split but not small enough to use conveniently in my smoker. I would spend hours with an axe, next to my woodpile re-splitting this wood so I could use it. I would get exhausted, sweaty, and occasionally use salty pirate language as I smacked myself with a piece of wood or the side of the axe. I bought this splitter in the hopes that it would cut down on my work a little bit. This splitter is wonderful! Splitting wood is fun, fast, and you can really develop a rhythm using this unit. I can re-split a whole dump cart of wood in about 30 minutes and not even break a sweat. I will warn you that the unit is heavy which makes unpacking it a chore. I also wound up adding some hydraulic fluid as others on here had warned that the unit doesn't always ship full. (Thanks for the warning). You also need a 20 amp breaker to run the motor or you may blow a fuse as I did when I first plugged it in, in my garage just to try it out. I also bought the 4 way splitting adapter but discovered that it likes to pop off the splitting arm as you use it so now I just leave that piece in the shed and use the unit as is. I haven't had any trouble with it and now I don't dread firewood splitting. BTW, I don't split anything much larger than 8-10 inches in diameter but this thing handles knots and all on wood that size, especially if you put the knot away from the traveling splitter end. UPDATE: Jan 1, 2018. Still going strong. I added the photos today. I love this thing.

I have lot of ash trees around my home and every year, the emerald ash borer claims another tree or two and I have then cut down which leaves me "free" firewood as long as I split it and I've done that by hand for years. Ash burns really well but it's a pain to hand split because it's sinewy and tough. Factor in my advancing age, too many years of playing ice hockey goal, three shoulder surgeries and I decided that my days of hand splitting with an 8 pound maul are over. But I don't have the room or need for a "real" 25 ton 9 HP Honda splitter on a towable trailer. Taking into account the facts above, the Boss 7 ton is a nice unit with a few caveats. See Pro/Con below: Pro: -Small footprint - easy to store -More powerful than I thought. This little bear with chew through 14 inch ash logs without hesitation -No fumes - you can run this anywhere indoors or outdoors -Recognizes when the wood splitting load is too high and the hydraulic ram automatically reverses. When this occurs, the ram will not operate until you turn the pump motor off and back on again. -Runs on regular 15 amp circuit. I ran the machine for an hour on a 12 gauge 25 foot extension cord on a 15 amp circuit with no issues -Quiet, especially if you've ever used an 11 HP Honda 30 ton splitter -A VAST improvement over hand splitting. -A variety of accessories - 4 way splitter head, extension legs and a log tray, all ala carte of course. -Simple maintenance and assembly. Unbox and screw on the power handle and you're done. Check the hydraulic oil before operation! Con: -a 14 second cycle time sounds quick on paper but in the real world, it’s slow. I know. It’s a $400 unit, not a $3000 unit. On the positive side, the slower cycle makes it safer to operate than a unit that has a 4 second cycle. -This is where it gets interesting because the biggest cons for me are really simple fixes by Boss. There is an air release wing nut on the hydraulic ram that MUST be opened 4-5 full turns every time you run the splitter or you can blow the hydraulic seals out and void the warranty. OK, I get it - the problem is that the "signage" on the machine for opening that valve is NON-EXISTENT! I added my own - see photos with the yellow labels I added and the magic marker that denotes the location of the wing nut vent. I'd think there could be some sort of automatic pressure release available - the wing nut thing is pretty bush league. -One hand operation which is a pro or a con depending on your opinion. Two hand allegedly is safer but I doubt that myself having used a "two handed" Homelite splitter. You have to run both machines to fully comprehend. -Don't EVER lend this unit without explaining that wing nut valve requirement very carefully and explicitly or you're going to get a blown hydraulic ram back from your buddy and it won't be their fault. -Works a lot better than hand splitting but as I pointed out, it's slow. I've split about a cord of wood with this unit and its a lot more work than a large tow behind splitter but far ahead of a hand maul. -I wish the unit could be stood on end with greater stability and NOT having to remove the power handle. The footprint standing on end is remarkably small. -Read the manual and watch the Boss website videos before operation. This isn't really a "con" but it will help you run the unit safely. Don't kid yourself, a 7 ton hydraulic ram can rip off fingers or a hand in a flash. The video attached show the 4 way splitter accessory which is a separate review that I wrote but it allows you to see how the hydraulic ram knows to automatically "back up" when it meets too much resistance. It does the same thing without the 4 way splitter with gnarly or oversized logs. Overall, the Boss 7 ton log splitter is well made, easy to use, simple to assemble and is a solid improvement over a hand splitting maul. It's deceptively heavy - like 115 pounds and the build quality is top rate. If you want a pardon from hand splitting, don't plan to be busting a cord of wood a day and can tolerate the slower pace of ~15 second cycle time, the Boss 7 HP splitter is a great machine!

Boss 7 ton log splitter arrived properly packed in a shipping container. Setup was simple as were the operating instructions. I have used a gas 26 ton log splitter for many years with good result, but as I am getting older (80) I find the gas splitter is a little much. Starting the electric splitter the first thing you notice how quiet it is compared to the gas variety. I was concerned with the lower power of the electric model but was pleasantly surprised at the power and the fairly rapid action. I have read a number of negative reviews and as one of the positive reviews stated, I think the secret to proper operation is reading and following the directions in the operating manual.

Style: 7 Ton Electric Log Splitter
Was very concerned whether this electric splitter would do the job. Based on reviews from other owners however, I decided to buy it. WOW, what a splitter! Couldn't be happier with it. Has split everything I have thrown at it, old wood, newer wood, knotted wood, bigger pieces than they recommend, longer pieces than they recommend, etc. Was concerned the cut time cycle was too long, but if it split well, you pull the log apart manually and let go of the handle and it immediately returns cutting the cycle time significantly. The splitter was ready to cut before I could get the next piece loaded. I filled 2 large holders rather quickly. It is surprisingly quiet and very easy to use. Like everyone else says, just make sure to open and close the pressure wing nut. I use a garden seat which keeps you from having to bend over, and if you set yourself up conveniently, it's not taxing at all. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SPLITTER!

I'm not sure what has been more of a nightmare - the piece of equipment or the abominal customer service. I ordered my log splitter at the beginning of the year and have had hydraulic leaking issues for EVERY. SINGLE. USE and after I reached out to Boss, grand ole Kevin decided to tell me I shouldn't have checked the fluid. Clearly in the manual, it states to check the fluid and "tighten" when putting the dipstick back in to complete inspection - no specifications whatsover. Kevin has purposefully and quite rudely ignored all of my attempts to have this item replaced. I have made multiple phone calls leaving multiple voicemails, with multiple emails, to just be ignored. So I guess reviews and the Better Business Bureau are where we will deal with their completely unprofessional behavior. I would never recommend a Boss product to anyone, ever, if this is the quality of their equipment and staff. I am sick and tired of this leaking all over my garage during every single use. Fix YOUR problem
